  • How to wire a single phase change over switch to a three-phase DB board.
One phase connected to changeover for generator backup power.

Hi. Very well made video. Enjoyed watching. One point though. If you have a larger generator, say a 7kva which has two socket’s of 15 amps each. Do you still only wire up one socket to the standby supply ?Can you wire both sockets into the supply for more power?

Nice video. Should you not indicate on DB cover which circuit is fed via generator? May additional light?
Also your Earth Leakage should now be labelled a 'Main' switch for that feed.
    Is that generator VOV wound?

The output of the main breaker connected to the change over switch. The generator connected to the change over switch. The load connected to the change over switch. This Correct?

    Last two points.
Shouldn't the generator be bonded to the earthing of the house at the earthing terminal?
Live current should never be applied to a plug (i.e. the industrial socket). If ever the generator is on and that is unplugged, anyone could touch the inside metal of that plug and be electrocuted. There will be no earth leakage protection in that case.

thanks, it should be female. The only issue with running long earth cables is that they develop a volt drop. I earth every where i can to have multiple earth points. In this case i used a spike and also earthed to the carport which is connected to gutters and pipes via straps. But genny needs to have its own earth spike as well. thanks for your comments

@@ecologicaltime check SANS regulations about earthing and earth cable size.
Separate earth rods lead to earth loops and potential differences.
All exposed metalwork including gutters and a metal roof are required to be bonded to the main earthing point.

Wow. That is one badly wired DB!

Since when do you have negatives in an AC system? Surely you mean neutrals.

    • @ecologicaltime

thanks it should be Neutral. When current can flow to earth, i call it negative...

Ok, so by connecting the unprotected breakers like that to the generator live, you are unwittingly making the neutrals of those circuits live as they won't have anywhere to complete the circuit. Thus you are backfeeding into the council neutral when the generator is on, which is against SANS wiring regulations.
A generator must have complete separation from the grid feed.

    • @ecologicaltime

it does not back feed as the changeover switch is double pole double throw. The phase becomes completely standalone after change over to genny.

@@ecologicaltime you have connected across the top of the earth leakage (which is live on the generator) to the breakers which are not protected by earth leakage. Thus making those items live on the generator but not connected via neutral. So they won't work but you have made the council supplied neutral now live to the generator live.
This in turn can make all earths also live via the TN-C-S at the meter board.
You need to feed those breakers before the changeover switch to correct this, not after.
