    Thanks for being someone who
    1) Does not waste time by gabbing too much
    2) Knows how to PLAY
    3) Knows how to RECORD.
    I enjoyed this entirely, and smiled along with you just after that 6:46 mark - thanks

      They're pretty simple circuits and Marshall remember how to make them... the thing is, each component has a different value with vintage and vintage correct parts. So you may buy three 250k resistors and one is actually 221, 267 and 283. So you multiply by about 100 components that might impact sound, each Plexi ends up sounding different. The odds that two would sound the same are astronomical. Now the non handwired regular PCB Plexi you can buy uses a bit "higher quality" modern components, so they sound much closer together and since we can make caps and resistors super accurate now, you can actually replicate the sound of a particular amp. Half an hour with a multimeter and a notepad and you will learn the secret to any particular Plexi.

  • @Turboy65
    @Turboy65 5 лет назад +3

    Close enough that I would not be confident I could tell the diffference by sound alone. Nicely done, Marshall.

  • @simonvanderheijden432

    Well, try the reissue through a "new" speaker cab with reissue speakers. (Not everyone has an old Marshall cab with G12H30 55Hz Celestion Greenbacks with Pulsonic cones laying around). That's a whole different ball game. Those old greenbacks sound absolutely amazing, the newer one not so much I'm afraid. And another thing people tend to forget is that we are used to the sound of these things recorded. What I mean to say is that, if we listen to an album of someone using a Plexi, we listen to the processed sound (mic on the speaker, room mic, compressing, eq-ing and other stuff). It's not the "amp in the room" sound. So it will sound quite different when you stand next to one compared to what we hear on an album.

    Love the reissue so much that I bought one. No reliability issues...and something we tend to forget/neglect is that I wouldn't be surprised if the 1967 sounded different fifty-years ago compared to now with all components aged half a century.

    • @JohanSegeborn
      @JohanSegeborn  8 лет назад +3

      +Rick McCargar Thanks my friend, yeah what they sounded like back then is a mystery, with component drift and all. The dry tracks of late 1960s recordings could probably give us a hint, but they still have the tape compression and saturation on them. Cheers

      If you consider how many sets of Filter Capacitor, valves, and other components have been swapped in the past 49 years on the '67 1986, that amplifier has probably never had exactly the same sound over the years. But I'll be willing to bet that if it was plugged into a cabinet with nice speakers, it has always sounded good.

  • @scottbaierl

    The new amp sounds more aggressive... a harder edge. The '67 was a little smoother and a bit warmer, although the warmth may be the fact that it is a Super Bass rather than a Super Lead. I have vintage examples of both in my stable, and find that the Super Bass is a bit more fun when I decide to get my "blues" on... For straight up rock, the Super Lead seems to have a bit more gain and cuts more. They are very close though. I love both, and even thought the new one sounded damned good.

    • @JohanSegeborn
      @JohanSegeborn  8 лет назад +7

      +Scott Baierl Thanks Scott, yeah some of the warmth can probably be attributed to the bass circuit, but also a 67 Lead would be considerably warmer than the reissue. Until 67 the difference between lead and bass was primarily the bright cap. After that they got different tone stacks and the Lead got splitted cathodes. Then they truly became different amps. Cheers Johan

    Johan, this clip has to be some of the best playing and incredible tone of any demo of yours or any other player I have ever heard. Being Fortunate enough to own one of the 1987X from 1972, I feel as if I hear your sound every time I play through that amp. For now I am using a 300 Watt Stereo 1960 A cab, and sadly I sold my original 1960A from around 72/73 and regret doing so especially since they are twice the money I charged for mine.

  • @surfnorthwest1
    @surfnorthwest1 8 лет назад +14

    While to the average person the differences are subtle. HOWEVER as a player myself I hear dynamics from the the 67 that are not there in the 2015. The pick attack sounds better and the sustain in the 67 is less compressed. Overall the 67 has a edge in the Harmonic feedback too.
    Having said that you are comparing an iconic Marshall with one you can buy of the shelf today, great job by Marshall to get it that close with modern components.

    • @katman11
      @katman11 2 года назад

      I also hear more bass response in the 67... I'm sure Johan has the EQ the same for this comparison....could it be a subtle difference in the bass circuit?

    • @qua7771
      @qua7771 Год назад

      So, the difference would be in the internal components that are no longer in production today plus aging. I'm curious what new production parts Marshall used in the repro. Some new production parts sound similar, Sozo caps, Heyborer trans etc...

    @semojo1 6 лет назад +1

    Great reissue, I do hear some chirps and ringing I like better with the original though. The tube set up is the same. Power, pre and rectifier. • @soundboy57
    @soundboy57 7 лет назад +3

    Ya know, on second listen, again through nice studio monitors...and being a gear snob....it is tough to really say if in a recording you could hear much difference...can't believe I am saying that...yeah the original sounds more "gnarly" in the low mids, and a bit more open...more of a :vocal: quality...but Marshall really did a great job on the newer amps, that many gear snobs (like me) tend to dismiss. I have had a handful of the late 60s amps, and they are impossible to totally match. When playing in person. For example....I had a Malmsteen signature amp in a room of 60s and 70s JMP heads. The Malmsteen was at the bottom of the pile, even with a late 70s 2204. It had less kerang and was rounder and softer sounding, where the old ones had that low mid vowel quality and more definition. ...I still say it is the combination of the old capacitors and transformer materials/design. There are so few of us old timers that really care anymore, but that is my two cents. Keep up ALL of the great vids Johan. :)

      And it's half the cost to replace power tubes and if you like overdrive a 50 W Plexi has lower headroom so it doesn't need to be turned up as much to get the sound. The only reason for a 100 W is if you play clean and loud. SRV used Marshalls for clean tones before the Dumble.

    There's something in the 67 Plexi top and bottom end that's missing on the Reissue. The Reissue seems a bit too compressed and focused on a narrower spectrum of mid frequencies. That said, they both sound cool :)

    • @JohanSegeborn
      @JohanSegeborn  8 лет назад

      +Daniele Turani Thanks, that's a good summary, the 67 has more overtones and a deeper bass but the reissue probably cuts through most mixes better. Cheers

    The new amp is a little gain-y-er..probably because everything is new. Those who are saying "the 67 wins by a mile".....frankly I don't know what your hearing, but then again, my ears aren't sensitive enough to detect "mojo" .Probably damaged from playing loud electric guitar music for 40+ years.

      you know, all it takes is a preamp tube slightly out of spec (pretty common) to produce the difference in the video. If you put a "reissue" sticker on ANYTHING (including a tomato or someone's baby) a crowd of guitar players will come out from the woodwork and start slagging it off.

    Johan, you’re a special case! And again I found a great video of you! Thank you! I guess, I’ve already mentioned it: It’s always interesting and fun to watch your videos and you’re a great musician. In this film I like your heavy stone riffs (from about minute 1) very much, wish, I had an idea how to play it. By the way: I wouldn’t give too much on the difference between the Marshallows here.
    You’re naturally, nice and crazy enough for your surprising videos, always coming straight to the point - that’s what I like!
    All the best to you!

    Love this video. I must say I prefer the older model to the reissue. But I have to laugh at the “tone know it alls” here that think they could tell the difference in a real world situation. I GUARANTEE you that you could record something with the reissue and tell them it was an original 1967 and they would say “yeah man! No THAT’S the tone that a reissue can’t do”. I GUARANTEE it. I’ve seen it happen to many tone snobs.

  • @firstboyonthemoon8876

    Those old amps just have a special magic tone that the manufacturers these days just can't seem to capture.

  • @zackstaa7826
    @zackstaa7826 3 года назад +1

    The original definitely has a “seasoning” mixed in that makes it a little more dynamic. I wonder if the circuit wiring is original, I suspect it is. The characteristics of a valve amp can change slightly as it ages. The original most likely sounded exactly like the reissue when it was brand new in ‘67.

    The original wins by a mile. It is smoother and has more compression. But maybe after a few thousand hours of playing the reissue might do the same thing.

    • @JohanSegeborn
      @JohanSegeborn  8 лет назад +5

      +LARRY There will be some component drift over time, but it won't make it sound better.

    • @larry2388
      @larry2388 8 лет назад +7

      Johan Segeborn I find that amps sound better over time and that the reason for that is because transformers get weaker over time, and that weakness equals smoother tones and more compression. That's why a vintage tube amp never sounds the same after it blows an output transformer and gets a new one. It's not the design of the transformer, but the newness that ruins the tone.
      I have a Fender Blues Deluxe that used to have an ice pick sound to it. I smoothed it out using an attenuator. Well, after hours of using the attenuator, the abuse aged the OT transformer nicely. Now I don't need the attenuator anymore, and the amp sounds like a vintage amp.
      Go replace the OT transformer on your 67 Plexi with a new one. A lot of the magic will disappear.
      Of course, there are other factors to the magic of that plexi. The old power transformer and the old speakers too add to the smoothness and compression due to the windings building up resistance over the years.

    Surprised how great the 87X sounded. But the old ones just have more of everything...kerang for days, rawness and open sounding, better definition, etc. Tubes make a HUGE difference, but not as much as those old transformers. You can't even get the same materials anymore. Still,,,,for the money, I would be happy with the newer one....as long as I had an old one, too. Which I do, so I am biased. Great job again Johan, thank you.

    Both amps sound great. The 67' is warmer and a touch darker and slightly rounder tones. That classic "Marshall" tone. The 2015 reissue is brighter with a touch less mid with a more "square" tone. The problem with both amps is they have to be cranked to the point of utterly exploding to get that "plexi" tone. Great video!

  • @bkelly289

    thank you for the comparison, however, I would like to hear a true 1987 vs. 1987 reissue. both of these sound great, but the 67 has a little more chime on the top end. I am pretty sure that the 68 or 69 marshalls made some changes as far as rectification. I love this demo, nice job Johan!!!!

    Oh man, Sunshine Of Your Love is one of those songs that I can't hear enough!! Great playing and super nice amps! To my ears the original has the ability to clean up better and the reissue has more highs & mids. The original has the classic plexi crunch and the reissue sounds a little "nasal-ly"
    What volume were they on to get that nice crunchiness? And for the clean stuff around 4:00min. did you clean up with the guitar vol. or turn down the amp?
