I guess there were just a lot of different high school jazz bands attempting to play this song.

Conductor said nothing just a slight nod with pursed lips, handed out the next chart and we never spoke of it again. We never asked why we didn't practice that song again.

We already had plenty of charts to learn, and he rightly assessed this particular one was beyond our reach given the time we had left. He got us into great shape and we did lots of great things. This song just wasn't one of them

Again, I've only been playing bari since sophomore year of highschool but even some 4 years later I get winded playing low notes staccato. I think there's a video of me playing bari on this account if you're curious, but that's hardly relevant.

We did this chart this year in jazz ensemble and absolutely rocked it! We have a lot of saxophones so we have a separate group playing acapella saxophone pieces called Super Sax and they came in and did this section of the chart with us
I agree, I was thinking of transcribing one, but he provides all the sheet music for his covers in the descriptions, so there's not much point. Definitely want to transcribe one of his solos though (I tried the intro to aquatic ruin zone, but I didn't get very far).

Yup. When I was a wee youngster our High School Jazz Ensemble used "Groovin' Hard" as one of our festival pieces. At one of the festivals we used it it turned out that Don was one of the judges of our division. We didn't know this until we stepped onto the stage and saw him in the back with the other 2, one of whom was Ashley Alexander (yeah, it was a long way back). He actually complimented the sax section in his notes on their handling of such a tough soli. We wound up 2nd that day.
I just now realized, you have the part transcribed correctly, but the bari isn't playing what you have transcribed as he goes to E natural instead of Eb in the entirety of this opening phrase. There's a few other things here and there, but I'm not gonna be too picky as transcribing is hard and transcribing low instruments is harder. I'm just whining cause I play bari and this is one of the best bari sax parts I've ever played in a big band and I have it memorized hopefully for eternity.

@@gkostur sorry I quickly responded and assumed you were either the transcriber or the guy who played the parts in the original video and didn't realize you were Glenn, apologies. Yes, you did play Eb in the recordings and it's Eb on all the sheets I've seen of the part. Big fan by the way, just commenting on how I was hearing E natural here when it should be Eb which is what is on the transciption and what was originally played.
When u have 3..4 or 5 saxes all playing the same phrase in harmony and phrased the same by all players..thats a soli..a bari playing a bass line under the other saxes doesnt do it..its a sax section solo..just my humble opinion..and the mf band is a long time favorite of mine..and lets not forget the great stan kenton bands opus in pastels..which he wrote for a sax section as an exercise for sax sections for blend and harmony and phrasing..then added rhythm section and turned it into a stand alone sax feature in the bands book..please liten to the suggestions ive put in these 2 posts..and i hope you enjoy them

The list goes on an on..the buddy rich big band of the 70s and 80s is by far the best band on the planet ever for sax solis..period
