Why can't we have beautiful stagings like that one by Ponnelle anymore? I agree with the user who complained about the tempi. Gerhaher, the finest barytone on Earth, cannot go along with the conductor.
He is a great Singer, for German opera and Lied, but for italian repertoire, the vocals are too open, the sound is Wagnerian but not Italian, sorry. Italian singing is not screaming, , il canto Sul Fiatto non si sente, peccato.
That's hell of a lot of work, and not in a good way. And breathing in the middle of Jubilar like that is something that undergrads don't do...Not my favorite

Agree, contrast the beginning and end of his performance as he loses power trying to balance.
during the staging, there is always a dialog between the director and the singer and usually, if singers feel unconfortable, they say "No"
