Thanks so much! This was the S-500 demo I have been looking for...your playing SOLD me on the guitar. You showed me that it is truly just what I was looking for...Thanks Jonathan!
That guitar and you really does seem like a perfect match. Such a sweet sounding instrument in the hands of a sweet sounding player. G&L is a great company with a proud legacy and I love the sound of their MFD pickups. Jonathan, you're as always an inspiration as a guitarist and as a human being. Thanks for sharing your joy, everything about this video put a smile on my face too. :)
Jonathan.....I was like you. I was a die hard strat man. However after purchasing my first G&L S 500 I was blown away by the awesome sounds that this guitar can do . Having controls over trebble and bass adds another dimension to the sounds which you cannot get from other guitars... Thank you for this awesome demo...!!!
I just recently discovered your channel and man your playing is so sweet. Such a treat to listen too. Also thank you for sharing your experience with the guitars you review.
you are an awesome player Jonathan. And you also have a extremely peaceful vibe and energy. I really enjoy watching your videos and I wish you all the best. Cheers from Argentina.
Awesome demo! Love your playing and so appreciate just going through the clean tones to just hear the guitar. Very much enjoyed this. This is how demos should be done imho.
Wow, you make that G&L sing. So enjoyable to listen to. Thank you. I had never played a Fender before and I am fascinated by Leo Fender’s history. I saw a ASAT Bluesboy on the Stupid Deal of The Day so I picked it up. I instantly fell in love with it. Needless to say now I own five G&Ls. Also wanted to say I got to visit Singapore on three separate occasions with the US Navy. What a beautiful city. Thank you for your awesome G&L video. God Bless and greetings from Lubbock, Tx. 🤠🎸👏
Jonathan, it made me very happy to see YOU so happy with this guitar. As usual, your playing was an inspiration. I learn a little (or a lot of) something from you every time I watch one of your videos. Cheers, my friend!
I love to see someone so happy with their guitar! I'm also a huge G&L fan, I have a couple of them now from various eras. I was never a fan of strats but there's something about the aesthetic and feel of G&L that I can't get enough of, I really appreciate the company. Classic instruments but with such a smooth feel, amazing finishes and enough differences to set them apart in many unique ways from Leo's previous designs. Your playing is outrageous, too. Excellent video :)
So Cool! Glad you finally got your G&L from 1995! Beautiful guitar and love the color. My first guitar was a 1965 Fender Mustang in Sonic Blue. Keep up the good work!
dude man, G&Ls are like my favorite guitars. I had an S-500 a long time ago but ended up selling it. Regretted it ever since. Awesome review man! Keep rockin'!
My dream guitar! I tried a USA G&L in the shop a few weeks ago and I was very impressed and now I am a huge G&L fan :D Can´t wait to actually own one! I also love the fact that the USA models are pleked, which makes for a comfortabe playing experience.
I love G&L - have an ASAT and want one of the S500s. IMHO much better than Fenders, especially these days, at a much better price point. Lovely playing from you as well! Your channel is so good - no snark, just playing good guitar gear and an honest opinion.
Great demo, Jonathan! I have two of these, one regular S-500 and one built to my specifications with the wider quarter sawn neck, reverse headstock, locking tuners and reverse angled bridge pickup. It’s a Hendrix styled S-500. As far as the setup, since 2011 they have been using a Plek machine at the factory. I live in Norway and had mine shipped directly from the factory in Fullerton and it was perfect right out of the case. I’ve never even had to adjust the truss rod, probably due to the very stable quarter sawn neck. I really want an ASAT classic (tele) and an ASAT special. And I agree that the 2 point tremolo is excellent.
I have a 2014 US Legacy in Candy Apple Red metallic with matching headstock...and of all my guitars, which I love and appreciate, my G&L Legacy is my favorite and is a dream to play!
Really lovely guitar Jonathan! I have played the g&l s500 tribute made in indonesia guitar and loved it. This Usa model has given me gas :) Looking forward to more videos with it. All the best to you Brother!
I bought an S-500 earlier this year and its has become my "go to" guitar as it has some wonderful tones (as you demonstrated in this video). Again I really like your style of playing and as with the recent ASAT Tribute video, you made this S-500 guitar really sing. Keep making the video's. PS - I still think that G&L should get you over to do some demonstration video's using their guitars.
From Leo: That guitar has very nice tones, and is very versatile. I am impressed with all the clean voices of those MDF pickups. Your playing skills are wonderful also, You and that guitar make a good team. Thank you for your work.
Nice Job! I had a G&L Bass back in the 80’s and what a sound. I trade it in and when I realized I made a mistake I went back ta get it and within 2 weeks it was gone. Sold!!! I think about it now and then.🤣😂😫
I had one of these from the mid-90s. I could never get it to sound as good are you're making yours sound and just couldn't bond with it, so I sold it on eBay/Reverb and bought a Legacy. Great playing and tone.
@@soofitnsexy The S-500 has MFD (Magnetic Field Design) pickups and the Legacy has alnico pickups. In addition, the S-500 has an "expander" switch that allows you to use neck+bridge and all 3 pickups.

Hi Jonathan, nice and gentle tribute to Leo and Georges 👍 as you said, we may have several (too many!) Guitars, there is one we love over the others. Mine is my Fender Strat American Vintage 62 reissue 3 tones sunburst, that I will never sell. About G&L I have never played one, not so common in guitar shops of France.
I love these guitars too. the family music store I worked in up til the early 90s did start getting them in just before the closed the 2nd store (all retail) n I'd always wanted 1 but haven't had a chance to get 1 so far. There not too common in my part of Canada, only 1 dealer I found within driving distance n that's a bit hard to get to.
WONDERFUL, INSPIRATIONAL review of my Favorite guitar! Even though I'm a beginner with zero experience on an electric guitar, I've researched guitars fairly extensively and find G&L to be exactly what I'm looking for in a high-quality (but not boutique-priced) electric guitar. The S-500, In particular, strikes me as the embodiment and culmination of decades of Leo Fender innovation. I'm so looking forward to getting my first electric guitar, and it will be an S-500, or an S-500 Tribute. THANK YOU for sharing your exceptional playing style and talents with us! Love the soulfull playin on an awesome guitar. I love the tremolo especially, and that toggle switch that have a function kind of like a blender. Lovely playing and guitar! I just picked up a 1995 G&L Legacy USA last night in blue metallic flake. I've never played a Strat so "alive" as this was- even A/B'd against the Eric Johnson Strat too.
Jonathan Koh MFD? From what I can gather of 1995 USA Legacy models, they are hand wound but I would need to pull them out and check. Here’s my photo on TGP: www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?media/ngd-g-l-legacy-usa.164531/
Thanks Jonathan for all these wonderful songs inside every video. Always sound incredible. Do you teach guitar? With all of the great gear I see you demo, you must have filled a room with gadgets.
Sweet looking and sounding guitar. It looks like G&L is trying to keep up with Brian May's pick up selector system where any combination is possible in phase or out. I love Strats and Strat based guitars. Thanks for posting this demo.
With expander switch engaged: positions 1 and 5 = neck and bridge; position 2 and 4 = all 3; middle position = middle pickup only (same as with expander switch not engaged.
I just love my G&L S-500 . I own a Fender and I honestly believe that dollar for dollar from $550 - $2,700 G&L makes the finest Strat style guitar in the market. No competition.
best demonstration i saw for this guitar. i got asat tribute curved top. its fantastic. thinking about buying a strat or another g&l (s-500 or legacy). and this video my friend, convincing me going for s-500
Jonathan Koh That I shall my friend. Something about the legacy of Leo Fender. Also I condone the heart you have. I too raised my kids and I did alone. My son I taught guitar and today is quite amazing. Well known in Tampa Fl. Tho he plays metal in his band on iTunes Spotify named DISAREYEN he plays classical blues and all. Amazing. He’s a pertrucci man. Hahah. Ibanez prestige is his baby. I wish I was half as awesome. Hahaha. Anyway I bought him stuff. After him and my daughter grew and moved on after grad I then took guitar up again to learn where I left off. Old drummer. Keyboardist. Hahahaha. Lovely show as always.
Hi Jonathan. I've had an s500 tribute since 2016 and it has seen off a couple of strats in that time including a deluxe with Fender noiseless pickups. Can't beat the great sound of the MFD pups. Best single coil pickup? 2-Way tremolo is incredible too. If G&L added an offset or sloped neck plate and made locking tuners (I added Vanson lockers) standard then this guitar would be near perfect although a heavy beast as mine is swamp ash.
Unless they've recently changed things, all USA G&Ls are made in the same factory on Fender Avenue in Fullerton, CA. and the Tribute models are made in Indonesia. It's been more than 10 years(?) since any G&L guitars were made in either Japan or Korea. Also, I currently have 3 G&Ls with the expander switch (and I've owned 2 others in the past) and with the expander on, the pickups are selected as follows: 1 and 5: neck and bridge pickups. 2 and 4: all three pickups 3: middle pickup. I've been a regular on guitarsbyleo.com and I've never read that using the expander switch in positions 1 or 5 accentuates the volume of the pickup normally selected by that position and I've never noticed a difference on any of my expander-equipped G&Ls.
you really need to do a video on who inspired your guitar playing and your favorite guitarists if you havent already done one at this point 😉😉I would love to hear who your biggest idols and inspirations were/are when it came to picking up and learning the guitar. A church pastor originally taught me how to play but I was at an age where i mentally wasnt really interested in music. I didnt pick up the guitar and be like _"yes, i want to play like Malmsteen!"_ or _"I want to play like Brian May!"_ but I still kept learning and being taught how to play. I only picked up the Pastors style of playing and since he was a one man band type, a guitar was all he had to lead the congregation and the congregation were really really great singers 😂😂 After he started getting too busy for lessons - his son took over and he taught me a lot of basic guitar theory. Eventually they had to move away but by that time I had already started listening to bands like Queen and dabbling in slightly heavier bands like Manic Street Preachers. but Brian May was my first official guitar idol. I eventually qualified and moved onto playing with a worship band at my friends church youth center as i was always jamming with the rest of the band at the end till late right until they had to lock up. And i played there for many years and did a few sunday services to represent the youth group a few times but to me. your guitar playing reminds me of that style of playing or style you would normally hear from a regular church worship band. Very kind of slow and melodic with enough pauses to let notes ring out or blend with one another to make such beautiful sounds. I played with the youth worship group from the ages of 13 or 14 till i was around 20 but had to hand the torch over to some of the younger generation because my long commutes and late finishes with college made it impossible for me to make it there on time to play. This broke my heart but there was not really any other choice. Im 33 now and ive been part of a few college bands as well as local bands but unfortunately they have all come and gone and being an adult life takes precedent over everything and takes over whatever free time you have to mess around with things like that unless being part of a band and making millions was your main objective! anyway - Just a small life story from me 🤣🤣 Hopefully you will share yours!
Thank you for sharing brother. I will one day share my life experience.. But in the meantime, here is a trinket of who are my inspiration.. ruclips.net/video/zv6gVdsPPyA/видео.html
Hello Jonathan, I was wondering if you can demonstrate The quietness of those Pickups. From What I understand G&L Has 2 types of pickups the you you have on you model and the MDF-Z coil. I love the strat but hate the buzz.
I can tell you that the MFD pickups are not totally quiet. They are very powerful pickups with such great tones! I understand that the Z pickups are designed to cut down on the noise. I have yet to play on one so I cant confirm it 🤓✌
Hey Johnatan, could you be able to make a comparison between the Legacy and S500? I have a comanche and I'm in love with it, but I can't find a good comparison between these two guitars. They either have terrible playing, or are heavily overdriven, or are recorded with a landline phone from the 1950s. There is a sale in Andertons and the Legacy guitars are bargains now, but not sure if I should get the s500 instead of the legacy. Thanks. P.S. Great playing as always!
@@JonIsJustTooLoud I bought the Legacy already :D Your playing on that vid sold it to me. :) I couldn't wait, since this was a spring clearence discount for just 750e.. Can't wait to have it in my hands :)

Thanks for posting, am about to order one with a matching painted headstock and possibly 2 dimarzio 'transition' humbuckers?
Nice!! Have fun✌️❤️
I just love my G&L S-500 .
I own a Fender and I honestly believe that dollar for dollar from $550 - $2,700 G&L makes the finest Strat style guitar in the market.
No competition.
I totally agree ✌️❤️
Better than the PRS Silver Sky ?
@STF_YVR yes absolutely for me, better than a silver sky prs
best demonstration i saw for this guitar. i got asat tribute curved top. its fantastic. thinking about buying a strat or another g&l (s-500 or legacy). and this video my friend, convincing me going for s-500
Glad it helped!✌♥
You didnt use compressor here right? Its sounds great. Great playing.
I did.. just a tad ✌️❤️
Not much flaws to find there. Looks stunning and sounds great
✌️❤️
Beautiful playing AND guitar! Subbed!
Thanks!!😃✌️
I came so close to buying one last year. But I went with classic vibe. I still would love one one day. Even if a import one.
If you're looking a somewhat super strat.. Get the Fullerton made S500
@@robertclarkguitar nice!!! :)
That is a beautiful guitar. Sonic blue just suits a Strat.
I think so too!!
Thanks for sharing!!✌️❤️
Unless they've recently changed things, all USA G&Ls are made in the same factory on Fender Avenue in Fullerton, CA. and the Tribute models are made in Indonesia. It's been more than 10 years(?) since any G&L guitars were made in either Japan or Korea.
Also, I currently have 3 G&Ls with the expander switch (and I've owned 2 others in the past) and with the expander on, the pickups are selected as follows:
1 and 5: neck and bridge pickups.
2 and 4: all three pickups
3: middle pickup.

I have yet to play on one so I cant confirm it 🤓✌
And you might want to check out this video..

@@JonIsJustTooLoud Thank you for your reply
Hey Johnatan, could you be able to make a comparison between the Legacy and S500? I have a comanche and I'm in love with it, but I can't find a good comparison between these two guitars. They either have terrible playing, or are heavily overdriven, or are recorded with a landline phone from the 1950s. There is a sale in Andertons and the Legacy guitars are bargains now, but not sure if I should get the s500 instead of the legacy.
Thanks.
P.S. Great playing as always!
we''see.....✌❤
@@JonIsJustTooLoud I bought the Legacy already :D Your playing on that vid sold it to me. :) I couldn't wait, since this was a spring clearence discount for just 750e.. Can't wait to have it in my hands :)
I have a Tribute Fallout and even those series are very well made. Can't imagine how good a US made one will be :)
Yes..I tried the tribute..they are great guitars too! Neck is different..🤓✌
@@JonIsJustTooLoud I have no doubt :D
