  • There are SO few videos out there on what it's like to be an editorial assistant - so here's a quick attempt at showing you what my job is like during lockdown!
I'd love to be as helpful as possible to anyone looking into publishing as a career, so let me know if there's anything I can explain or discuss more.
I tweet and insta about publishing, diversity, and getting entry level jobs @amymaereads

For anyone who is still interested in the ‘How To Get Into Editorial’ course, I’m running it again in April 2024: www.badformreview.com/shop/p/how-to-get-into-editorial-course

This was so useful! Currently applying for a bunch of editorial jobs and getting an inside look at what the day is actually like is great at demystifying it all! Like, I know, internally, that this isn’t some crazy hidden set of skills that are impossible to learn, but it’s so nice to actually see that. Publishing houses often feel like these vast, unknowable things where you’re not really sure what happens on the inside, but submissions go in, and books come out the other end. It’s comforting to know that it’s just people, working with each other to make those books as good as they can! Thank you so much ☺️

This video was very useful. This seems to be a typical 9-5 with some overtime. I’m a junior in college right now, wanting to get into publishing, and one of my main concerns is just that time to yourself to still enjoy things like watching tv shows, reading other stuff than what you have to, and just the usual stuff.

Thank you so much for posting this- it is a huge help in demystifying the goals and tasks an editorial assistant takes on in their day to day! I heard you mention the challenge of working with bookstores in the pandemic ; I was wondering if you would find it worth it to discuss how editorial has remained the same from the pandemic until now and how it has changed from the pandemic until now and if you do think this is an important question to discuss, would you make a video on it?

This was so useful! I'm very interested in getting into the industry (coming from the TV/Film industry as an executive assistant). Good to know there is some transferrable skills. I'm wanting to know more about your write-ups/reports when you are requested to read a submission. I know you said you include whether or not you like the book, but how detailed do you have to be?

Hello! I’ve had a few questions on this so I’m going to try and make a quick video - but to summarise, it depends on the editor, and the more confidence they have in you, the less detail you have to give!

Hi, I liked your video and the detail of your day you tried to provide. Definitely insightful. I am currently pursuing my Masters and I am looking to study a publishing course then apply to the big 5 publishing companies. How would you suggest is the best way to start working in the editorial department without providing experience? Should I apply for an internship in the company first or entry level job?
Also, does Penguin have a lot of diversity? By this I mean, are there people working in the US office from India?
Would be helpful if you or anyone else could provide insights.

@@user-yi9zf6ke6o Ah depends on the job! For my traineeship, there were scheduled dates. For editorial assistant roles, it was usually within a fortnight. I think Penguin’s pretty good at responding swiftly usually, but there are some firms I’ve still not heard back from since January! You have to remember that the average entry level job at penguin has 700 applicants so a lot to get through :)
