It's quite easy to understand. One nation is the ally of the US and the other isn't. Israel wouldn't be able to get away with a fraction of the atrocities they carry out against the Palestinians if they didn't have cover from the U.S.

Sure there can be individual and even institutional acts of decency and kindness, But the frustration of outsiders and Palestinians is that Zionism did not convert a 95% Arab country into a majority state of a different ethnicity by being "peaceful and non-violent." It's completely self-deluding to think otherwise. A peaceful settlement would require that Israel recognises that a systemic wrong was done and is being done to the indigenous population, and acknowledges their claim to statehood (including over East Jerusalem). But Israelis don't see the injustice, and so either passively go along with or actively foster a status quo that can't help but breed more and more violence.

It all comes down to this, Isreal invaded Palestine in the most brutal, barbaric manner. Ever since 1948 Palestinians have been under oppression, occupation, torture, is no life, not even suitable living conditions for animals let alone humans. Resistance has risen against occupation, against the brutality. Initially it was political resistance, which was ignored, no resolution came of it. The atrocities continued. Then came the rise of armed resistance. There is no justification for the loss of Innocent life, we also do not know exactly what happened and whom killed whom, independent investigations need to take place in Isreal.
However what we do know for sure, is the butchering of Palestinian people, leaving thousands dead, thousands suffocating under the rubble, hundreds of children left limbless. This needs to stop. The man is 100% in stating the current aggression and haughtiness. What he is saying is very evident, even when they are heard and not seen, and despite being in a professional capacity.
October 7th was more complex. The Hamas soldiers were very disciplined and went after Israeli military and armed men in the Kibutz. It was the mob that followed them out of Gaza that committed atrocities. of the 1400 killed, how many by "friendly fire" and how many were armed Israelis. The army did come and where shooting everywhere, one hostages said and also said that no one had died untill then.
Yes I heard that eyewitness interview too. The israeli army sent two tank shells into an israeli home where 14 israelis were, along with some Hamas who must have intended to take them hostage. 12 israelis were killed, including a 12yo girl. The eyewitness, one of the 2 surviving women, said none had been harmed by the Hamas people before the two shells fired by the IDF killed them all. The reality that the IDF killed their own people rather than have them taken hostage will not be allowed to be shared publicly in israel, and I haven't seen it mentioned in western media either.

A superb interview that clarifies so much. Great to hear an Israeli with the wisdom and compassion of Gideon Levy. And his excellent interviewer. But so, so sad for Israel. And the International Community must withdraw support from the brutality of the Israeli government.
Most of the civilians killed on Oct. 7th were killed in the crossfire by the IDF.
And they still blame Hamas for it.
GIDEON LEVY must know this, and he lied about it. He said 1400 when Mark Regev admitted 200 of those were badly burned bodies of Palestinian resistance fighters. What a fraud.

One small criticism: I think Jamal was perhaps too ready to accept GL's picture of what happened on October 7th. GL makes it sound as if everything that needs to be known is known. But is this really true?
Also! If resistance fighters or other Gazans committed crimes in Israel when they had broken out of their concentration camp, should we really be surprised? Remember the Israelis sitting on sofas on the hills above Gaza cheering as the bombs dropped during previous assaults? Remember what the Israelis did during the Great March Of Return?
Even someone like Gideon Levy wants to portray events on 7/10 as somehow crossing over to a new level of evil. But how would he describe what has been done to Gaza over the last 15 years? Coming on top of everything that had already been done to the Palestinians in the last 100 years? What does he expect Israel's victims will do when - after everything that has been done to them - they come face to face with the people they regard as their tormentors?
Thank you for your one -sided view. It's almost like you think Egypt doesn't close its border with Gaza or that all the wars Hamas has started since it took power never happened. Bravo.
If you listen to the recent interviews of Malaysian former Prime Minister Mahathir, u will find a resemblance of the way Gideon Levy speaks. Truly brave, outspoken but in a careful and calm demeanor. Even their voice is almost similar. Fascinating.

Of the now about 1200 Israelis killled on 7 Oct about one fourth of them were soldiers or armed security forces, both legitimate targets for the Hamas military operation. IDF forces killed many Israelis in the kibbutz's and and at the music festival by firing indiscriminately at anyone and anybody or blowing up houses with both Hamas fighters and Israeli citizens with tank cannon and machine gun fire. So, how many Israelis were actually killed by Hamas fighters? They would also argue that kibbutz-niks were also para- and ex-military and fired upon them. So the number of "innocent" civilians is even lower. The Hamas attack was a military and not a terrorist operation. Why did it take IDF forces seven hours to respond to the attack? Why were crack IDF battalions withdrawn from the "iron wall" around Gaza? Why were female tank crews not familiar with the high tech tanks sent to blow houses containing Israeli civilians? Why is the Netanyahu government so intent on razing Gaza and ethnically cleansing the population and not concerned about freeing israeli hostages? The fish begins to stink at the head - Netanyahu and his cabinet of fanatics.

I'm an old colonized American Indian, educated in Los Angeles & Berkeley, CA...and I remember the word Philistine (presently defined as a person who is indifferent to culture & arts). As a woman married to an Israeli/American, we had many disagreements over our 35 yrs together. We were both b. 1946/47...so we experienced similar trends in American Life as well as indoctrination from American media. However, I must recall that my husband always displayed an attitude that a Gentiles were not equal in value to Jews, and this included me. Furthermore, I believe that he viewed Gentiles as Philistines...while my perception was more as it is today. Still, I can'rt help seeing the closeness in the word Philistine compared to Palestinian, AND recall my husbands constant criticism of all Gentiles, especially Palestinians. There is a long history of bias, & racism inflamed by the many disagreements over Land, & Religious beliefs, yet I was always bewildered, even as I saw that there was some conflict inside his mindset, having been raised in America, as a reform Jew, yet also one who had served in the Israeli Army & one who had been brainwashed during his Army days. He truly believed there were issues that were "none of my business," including indoctrination of our children, which he partially succeeded in accomplishment. I always believed that regardless of religion, ppl walk their own personal path toward Enlightenment, AND some things are difficult to unlearn, especially once they have been deeply instilled as children. So, his behavior was often confusing and inconsistent, AND, I think it will be so for ppl of Izrael, tho perhaps later than sooner. Still, it heartens me to see so much of the World is revulsed by the killing of Children, and for ppl, in famine or enslaved by aparteid or the buying and selling of human life. The World as a whole is slow to grow into humanity, but it WILL happen, as our Mother Earth teaches her lessons, where Water is Life, and Fossil Fuel is Death, where our health is maintained by our "care" of resources, of air, water, soil, and all minerals and stores of Earth's treasures, by balance of Sea & Land. Slow, Painful, and Lasting Lessons, we will need to find a way to satisfy our desires, and balance them against what the Earth, our mother & her Sacred Prizes can provide.
