Timothy Snyder is someone everyone should be paying attention to right now--given the Russian interference, the Mueller investigation, the rise of authoritarian parties and leaders all throughout Europe, etc. His books and lectures are great. I also think it's important to know Eastern European history in general, too. I'd like to see him on the Joe Rogan Podcast.

I'm afraid few of us know OUR OWN history very well. I think one should start there, yes? Keeping up with "history-in-the-making" is virtually impossible but I feel a social obligation to do my best.

I find some of Snyder's writing and talks interesting. However, when it comes to his "spotting Tyranny" , while I agree with most of his points, its the Left and Progressives that meet the criteria. I don't fear Trump or most republicans, they want to make the government weaker for the most part. It was Obama that used and weaponized government agencies to quite his critics and go after people. It's the Democrats that want to grow centralized government and empower themselves with government force.
Your on the right track my friend , just the wrong train.

Unless these claims get challenged, by vocal enough non BS accepters, I don't think they will give up.
While I am not one to go along with chanting generally, knowing quite a bit about Hillary, the "Lock Her Up!" chant is not baseless like most are. I'm more for try her, release ALL of the evidence in public, and probably execute her for her crimes. We need justice, not the elitists, and not shills like Bernie that profited by over a million dollars from campaign contributions, drives a high end Audi, and didn't challenge the primary results when he was clearly cheated out of the Democratic ticket.

Thanks for posting this rational voice in these stormy times. I fear very much that the right-wing train of thought currently so popular in the US spreads to other democracies. We already have Steve Bannon trying to have his way in the EU, and though I believe that his influence will not be as big as in the US, it is important to create awareness of the poison he is spouting.

Iamtop Working on it bro, Congressional elections in 60 days. If the Democrats take the house back Trump won’t be able to pull any of this BS because they will sit on him. If the Dems take back both houses he may we’ll end up removed from office. That will take a few Republicans to vote with the Democrats to remove him. You need a super majority in the Senate (67 votes out of 100) so that’s not a sure thing.

Good talk, my only problem is the last part. Russia was an important factor in the election because the system is weak and not very democratic.

...or if The People had fought election fraud, Bernie would be president.
i actually blame New Yorkers. Their primary was an obvious, textbook case of election fraud...and they did NOTHING.
if they had fought for their votes, the DNC would have reconsidered the rest of the cheating they did.
...of course, Iowa should have been the first to riot, Florida should have been the second, and Massachusetts should have been the third....New York, being Hillary's "home state" would have turned the tide.
      WE are responsible.

I didn't find out about what happened during the DNC primaries until well after Trump had been elected. I wonder how many people were in the same boat or are still not aware, even now. Incidentally, if Bernie had ran on a third party platform after the DNC rigged primaries against him in 2016 -maybe Trump would still have won, but at least some progress might have been made towards legitimizing third parties and softening the stranglehold the two party system has on American democracy. I wonder whether Bernie will support whatever corporate democrat the DNC props up for 2020. Given what he did in 2016, I don't see why Bernie wouldn't fall in line claiming "anyone but Trump" is the better strategy. I wonder whether his decision to not run independent then, and failure to do so in 2020 could reasonably be construed as a betrayal of his supporters. Either way, the American electoral process needs to be updated with a Range Voting system (e.g. STAR voting) and getting corporate money out of politics (i.e. overturn Citizens United vs FEC and the continued support of candidates that refuse corporate PAC money). I realize that if Bernie had ran as an independent, he would have gotten blamed for Trump's win. In fact, Hillary still blamed him for not conceding earlier and rallying for her (even though he did both better than she did either against Obama). Nevertheless, he might have lost a lot of political capital that he now enjoys. Having said that, given Trump's victory and the fact that Bernie is treated with nigh similar disdain _[by the DNC]_ as if he had ran on a third party ticket (maybe to a lesser extent); I don't know whether the political capital lost wouldn't have been worth the progress on the viability of third party options and maybe even the possibility that Bernie might have pulled a stunning upset. I'm not making delusional assertions that he would have won. However, given the voter turnout -there were more than enough voter absentia that if they had participated, they might have been enough to give Bernie the win, without having to pull a single vote from either Trump or Hillary. That is to say, Trump and Hillary each got about 26% of available votes. A little less than 45% of eligible voters were disenfranchised enough to not cast at all. I am not claiming that forty five percent would have gone to Bernie in its totality; however I think it's not unreasonable to say: we don't know what would have happened. Could Bernie have mobilized 27% out of those remaining 45%? Could he have mobilized 20% of those forty five, taken 4% from each candidate, and won the elections? It all has to be relegated to the realm of speculation and wishful thinking because Bernie didn't even try. Debating this now, is mildly to moderately futile, as hindsight is 20/20. However, the question remains should he get behind Biden (or whatever corporatist the DNC props up) again, come 2020? I think he should run on the third party ticket, if the DNC fails to nominate him. I understand that overcoming the two party monopoly and replacing FPTP with Range + Automatic Runoff Voting is by no means a trivial task, but I think it is too important (and possibly the most effective way to begin to repair American democracy) to just give up on it despite it being exceptionally challenging. There already are some districts within the US using alternatives to plurality and First Past The Post voting (e.g. Multnomah & Lane County in Oregon). I doubt these changes will come around on their own, without the people getting involved. Maybe you're right, and I am being naïve about what is feasible. But what is the alternative? To hope that the current two political parties repair the electoral system in America out of their own volition? Some other third and/or fourth options I'm failing to realize at present? Giving up and accepting the status quo and embracing that the US is not nor will it ever be a truly representative democracy, but instead it will forever be a corporatocracy with flawed voter participation? I would argue that change won't come unless people are willing to fight the uphill battle that is trying to upgrade our process of electing representatives -even at the risk of Bernie becoming a martyr or pariah.

In the unlikely event that you're not just a troll, and you actually had difficulty understanding what I was explaining... The stranglehold the DNC & GOP have needs to be broken. People have their own reasons for wanting third parties, whether it be Green Party, Libertarians, Reform Party, Independent candidates, etc. The fact that there are no viable options for these people is a clear and obvious deficiency in American democracy.

The wonderful thing about the internet age is the ability for international voices to be heard immediately. We are all watching what's happened and happening with Trump with absolute horror. The US is living in insanity right now and needs to be able to look at itself from outside the echo chamber. There's never been a better opportunity to do so.
On the flipside - the US has a long established and long proven history of exceptionalism. The rest of the world has been wrong before while the US prospered. They became superpowers by ignoring the world when they knew better and guiding them when they didn't. History tells them to maintain that arrogance and ignore the doubters. On top of that, American capitalism (as demonstrated in Monopoly) necessarily leans towards monopolies. Right now - FOX News owns 40% of the information that Americans consume and Trump owns Fox News. Between those two significant and serious issues alone, I fear that the US is unable to recognise or respond to the challenge before them.
As a member of the majority of the rest of the world, looking in from outside the bubble, I can't help but wonder if this is how everyone else felt while watching Hitler redefine and rebuild and repurpose Germany, while simultaneously being burdened by the ability to actually say something in real time, and knowing that they won't really care.

If you get a regime change towards corproratist oligarchy, there may not be a way back, considering industry 4.0 is coming and AIs might break through the singularity in a decade or so. Humans may become obsolete if we don't focus on the value of the individuals.

From George Washington's farewell address of 1796 (emphasis mine):
"The alternate domination of one faction over another, sharpened by the spirit of revenge, natural to party dissension, which in different ages and countries has perpetrated the most horrid enormities, is itself a frightful despotism. But this leads at length to a more formal and permanent despotism. The disorders and miseries which result gradually incline the minds of men to seek security and repose in the absolute power of an individual; and sooner or later the chief of some prevailing faction, more able or more fortunate than his competitors, turns this disposition to the purposes of his own elevation, on the ruins of public liberty.
Without looking forward to an extremity of this kind (which nevertheless ought not to be entirely out of sight), the common and continual mischiefs of the spirit of party are sufficient to make it the interest and duty of a wise people to discourage and restrain it.
It serves always to distract the public councils and enfeeble the public administration. It agitates the community with ill-founded jealousies and false alarms, kindles the animosity of one part against another, foments occasionally riot and insurrection. IT OPENS THE DOOR TO FOREIGN INFLUENCE AND CORRUPTION, WHICH FINDS A FACILITATED ACCESS TO THE GOVERNMENT ITSELF THROUGH THE CHANNELS OF PARTY PASSIONS. THUS THE POLICY AND THE WILL OF ONE COUNTRY ARE SUBJECTED TO THE POLICY AND WILL OF ANOTHER."

    What is a Cult?
    Read below to find out:
Psychiatrist Robert Jay Lifton, who once taught at Harvard Medical School, wrote a paper titled Cult Formation in the early 1980s. He delineated primary characteristics, which are the most common features shared by destructive cults, destructive cults like Trumpism.
    1. A charismatic leader, who increasingly becomes an object of worship as the general principles that may have originally sustained the group lose power. That is a living leader, who has no meaningful accountability and becomes the single most defining element of the group and its source of power and authority.

    2. A process of indoctrination or education is in use that can be seen as coercive persuasion or thought reform commonly called "brainwashing". The culmination of this process can be seen by members of the group often doing things that are not in their own best interest, but consistently in the best interest of its leader.
    3. The exploitation of group members by the leader and the ruling members.
Here are 10 warning signs of a potentially unsafe group or leader.
    • Absolute authoritarianism without meaningful accountability.
    • No tolerance for questions or critical inquiry.
    • No meaningful financial disclosure regarding budget or expenses, such as an independently audited financial statement.
    • Unreasonable fear about the outside world, such as impending catastrophe, evil conspiracies and persecutions.
    • There is no legitimate reason to leave, former followers are always wrong in leaving, negative or even evil.
    • Former members often relate the same stories of abuse and reflect a similar pattern of grievances.
    • There are records, books, news articles, or broadcast reports that document the abuses of the group/leader.
    • Followers feel they can never be "good enough".
    • The group/leader is always right.
    • The group/leader is the exclusive means of knowing "truth" or receiving validation, no other process of discovery is really acceptable or credible.
As we've all seen, when it comes to the warning signs and characteristics of a cult, Trump and his followers check most of the boxes.

He makes a very good case. However, the best way to oppose trump is to support the CENTER left (or center right). If liberals move to the extreme socialist left they will not only be morally no better than the present gov but- ironically- to get it re-elected.

The GOP has created this situation. Their tribal mentality has created the opportunity for the rise of US fascism. Germany followed this path in the 1930’s.

    Almost got to the bottom of the comment feed before it went off the rails . . . interesting to see where the constructive conversation lies--albeit not perfect--but it was there for a quick minute. Insulting others is the same old, tired, tactic equated to lack of will to produce possible suggestions rather than inject quick jabs of meaningless fallacy. Kudos to those who give a damn with regard to moving toward something akin to a democratic state ("small /d/," remember), rather than perpetuate the current morally eroded and stagnate state of affairs. Seems simple, really . . . we all look out for one another, with the goal of everyone moving up . . . or you continue to stay bent over. Free choice. ;) {@}

Fascism is from acronym NAZI which in German stood for national socialist party which is taking hold in America due to the left not the right, which of course socialism is (of the left). Socialism diminishes (at a minimum) property rights in that it openly takes from the haves and give to the have nots. However, that is just the beginning of the process as the government begins to coordinate with larger corporation such as google and various other tech giants and others like Nike as a recent example (their 22 million dollar contract with clemson announced at the same time as their hiring of kaepernick). The government begins to play favorites (openly and overtly) in business by giving contracts to preferred companies and withholding contracts from the others. By doing so it puts pressure on smaller companies that begin to fold (making big companies bigger by eliminating competition) and the process accelerates. The favored corporations are favored due to their beliefs and their adherence to certain centralized policies from high above. A result we can already see is if someone tweets something that is not politically correct and they work for one of these favored corporations or a corporation that wants to be favored they get fired immediately (Roseanne etc).
That my friends is just the beginning of fascism. As it grows people are forbid from saying or believing certain things and the list of what you must and must not believe grows and grows.... As the national (international socialism this time around) socialism grows so does censorship and adaptations of certain mandated beliefs as mentioned above...via the carrot and stick approach. For instance, if a company helps to promote homosexuality with its hiring practices and advertising dollars (and they want homosexuality to be promoted) they are rewarded and if not you are punished. We can see this already happening and many agree with it (bake that cake damnit!)...... As this continues, the number of large corporations will begin to shrink as do does consumer choices because the system consolidates power in this way... The circle of mega corporations gets tighter and tighter until almost no one has a job that does not think and act a certain way because everyone works for the same few corporations.... The system is totally in opposition to american freedoms and the free market ideas that we were founded on but that is ok because they have convinced everyone that the founders were greedy genocidal racist bigots. It is hard to find a person recently graduated who does not believe that. They subverted the country first, now they institute an entirely new system but it is really an old system that serves to put the masses in bondage and the elite few who are in charge living in an almost utopian state..... In reality, America's was a new system and we threw off those chains already once but here we go again!. . When they have the system firmly in place orders will come down from above that change things on a dime. For instance they may not "favor" certain groups as much as those groups want and those groups will do what they have always done and protest etc but now they will not tolerate such behavior. And the decision will be made to squash the "troublemakers." Now, we are no longer going to tolerate homosexuality etc and those people will be crushed. That is how fascism works and that is why it always comes from the left NOT the right. The Only difference is our scheme is now and geared toward international fascism not national fascism. They are literally forcing their views on us and robbing us of our sustenance... . Those who claim to value their rights will not be happy in the end, they are called the useful idiots that allowed this all to happen and in fact assisted in the process. That is where we are headed UNLESS Donald Trump can stop it. They do NOT care about you or your "stupid" rights. They are using you to gain absolute control. Once they do , you will expect things to be better and you will complain (as you always do when you are not happy and things are not good enough for you) but now they will crush you like cockroaches for opening your filthy mouths! You are helping them to build the fascist system that will keep you and everyone else totally under their thumb. This whole thing is all about power. Their power! Wake up!
