WHAT IS A ACTUALLY A DUNE:
It is a big hill of sand formed by the wind and water. At Indiana 10,000 years back, the Glacier receded leaving Lake Michigan and the Dune we see here. Wind and water have carried the sand here ever since.
MAIN ATTRACTIONS AT INDIANA DUNES
Here, beach is the main attraction, but you can easily spend the day hiking, biking, fishing, paddling even birding in the Dunes.
The Indiana Dunes National Park is 13,000 acres preserve stretching 15 miles along the coast of Lake Michigan. It includes plenty of hiking trails, more beaches, and some amazing historical sites. It also offers camping sites, amenities like parking lot and rest rooms are well maintained.
If you are looking for quieter experience, there are several smaller National Lake shore beaches: like Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk, Cowles Bog Beach, Porter Beach, Kemil Beach, Dunbar Beach, Lake View Beach, Central Beach, and Mt Baldy Beaches. The two most Indiana Beaches are:

Both these beaches require a Fee, ample parking spaces and conveniences like indoor restrooms, rinse of stations and lockers.

It just became the 61st National Park, established February 15, 2019. It was originally designated as Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Park in 1966 but this new National Park designation is a long journey commenced in late 1800.
A dune is a mound of sand formed by the wind usually along the beach or in a desert. Dunes form when wind blows sand into a sheltered area behind an obstacle. Dunes grow as grains of sand accumulate. Sand dunes are natural barriers against powerful waves and windy storms. Beach dunes are also a rich habitat for specific vegetation and wildlife.
Indiana Dunes National Park hugs 15 miles of the southern shore of Lake Michigan and has much to offer. Whether you enjoy scouting for rare species of birds or flying kites on the sandy beach, the national park's 15,000 acres will continually enchant you. Hikers will enjoy 50 miles of trails over rugged dunes, mysterious wetlands, sunny prairies, meandering rivers and peaceful forests.

DAT ENTRANCE PASSES: Entrance passes can be purchased from the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center, the Paul H. Douglas Center, seasonally at the West Beach kiosk, or online at recreation.gov.
Indiana Dunes National Park will require an entrance pass. The entrance fee is $25 for a non-commercial family-sized passenger vehicle or $15 per-person for walk-in / bike-in / boat-in.
