  • Today's featured song Kung Fu Fighting by Carl Douglas will have you kicking some serious butt while moving to the groove. A smash hit from the 70s, Kung Fu Fighting was inspired by a dance fight at a pinball arcade. As Carl Douglas watched what was taking place, the lyrics and melody started flowing into his head. However, the song wouldn’t resurface until later on. In the studio, Carl was recording what was supposed to be his break-out hit. And he had three hours to do it. But when he was done, his producer told him they also needed a B-side. With just A COUPLE OF minutes left on the clock, Carl rushed a recording of Kung Fu Fighting... after all, it was just gonna be a throwaway track. But as it turns out Kung Fu Fighting was the one that got all the attention. It became a monster 70s hit, tapping into two cultural phenomenons with expert timing. It’s one of the biggest-selling singles of all time. 11 million sold. The story is NEXT on the Professor of Rock.

It’s time for another edition of our series Bottled Lightning where we celebrate a song or album that was king for a day. Here we honor artists and bands and that rocketed up the charts… but for reasons unknown weren’t able to sustain that success. Called by some one-hit wonders, we celebrate them instead as lightning in a bottle. Today we’re featuring a song that put a smile on everyone’s face… It takes us back to the good old days and it’s one we can’t help but sing along to and do some hand gestures along with it. I’m talking about a song that is as fast as lightning and a little bit frightening. It’s the 1974 smash hit Kung Fu Fighting by Carl Douglas and it’s got a really cool story behind hit so stick with us.
Born in Jamaica and raised in California, Carl Douglas would later move to England and attend college in London in the early 60s. The plan was to study to become an engineer and then to take over his father’s family business. Simultaneously, Douglas also harbored ambitions to become a professional soccer player. However, neither of those designs would come to fruition, because Carl had another key interest as well: singing.
It was not uncommon to find Carl spending his time singing with friends in British pubs and clubs. And one day in 1964, his talent behind the mic finally caught up to him. Carl was attending a party with his soccer club at a local London coffee bar. That day a band called The Charmers was performing. At the prodding of his friends, Douglas took the stage to sing with them. And everyone was impressed by Carl’s voice and performance… especially The Charmers. This led to an invitation for Carl to the front group.
Carl Douglas and The Charmers gigged around the south of London for a while before later transforming into Carl Douglas & The Big Stampede. During the mid-to-late 60s Big Stampede toured relentlessly throughout the UK and Europe and released a couple of UK soul singles while....

    This song is hilarious.
I’m a police officer and we were in roll call one time, a split shift. A call came out and the guys on the street took the call and went. It was a fight across the street from a high school. As the officers arrived, the fight broke up and people scattered, the officers called back in that everything was fine, it’s all over, nobody seriously hurt.
In roll call we were listening to it. I jumped up and sang “EVERYBODY WAS KUNG FOO FIGHTING”. The entire shift exploded in laughs and everyone else “THOSE KICKS WERE FAST AS LIGHTNING”.
Good times. A cult classic song.

When this song came out, I was 15 and highly active in martial arts. (Brown belt, Shorin Ryu.) We all HATED IT because we felt it trivialized our art. Now, at 65, the only brown belt I still have holds up my Dockers and I love the song. I didn't know that Douglas wrote it. That means he gets all three kinds of royalties on it. (Mechanical, performing, and publishing.) I'm glad it's taken care of him since.

Nice video Prof. Nice to see Carl get kudos for his work. I liked it for about 5 minutes when it was released. Novelty wore out owing to the UK Radio overplaying the hell out of it and Carl appearing on every tv show known to man. Repeatedly. But as you rightly point out, that song set him up for life with cover version & song writing royalties. In those days one huge hit could do that. Not like current times where the streaming companies pretty much fleece the hell out of modern artists and one big hit single would not bring in half as much as Carl made back then and still does. Vinyl rules! Well done Carl. Respect!!

In 1973, I remember going to the all-night drive-in showing of; 'Enter the Dragon', 'Way of the Dragon', 'Game of Death', and, of all things... 'Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii'.
'Echoes part 2' was ending, just as the Sun rose. It was freaking brilliant!
It was one of the best all-nighters, ever!

Robert Clouse was the director of Enter the Dragon and Game of Death. They had a viewing room upstairs with all the promo posters and we could watch Enter the Dragon whenever we wanted. Bruce Lee was HUGE. I studied Kung Fu and all that for 3 years. I even created my own alphabet with chinese characters.
