Just preempting some questions/comments I know I’ll get. I am incredibly lucky to still be able to work from home and I know there’s many people who are struggling right now. Just wanted to give some insight into how science has been affected for those interested.
    1) *Why aren’t you, as a scientist, helping out with COVID-19 research?* Because I’m not an infectious disease expert. If I applied my stats and modelling skills to a situation where I don’t have the background knowledge I would cause more harm than good. I’d be in the way. I’m leaving this to the experts.
    2) *Why are we funding astrophysics research when we should be funding vaccine research?* A lot of science funding is sorted out months or even years in advance. All science contributes to the advancement of society - whether image analysis techniques, data transfer or pushing forward technology. It’ll all circle back in the end.
    3) Sam and I have been together since high school
    4) I know my home desk set up is terrible. I’m working on getting a new chair, monitor, keyboard and mouse through the university. But obviously everyone is in the same boat so it’s a bit slow going! I don’t want to buy it myself upfront and then find they can’t reimburse me for something

    • @arctic_haze
      @arctic_haze 4 года назад +35

Ad 2) There are even more reasons. Breaking long collected time series will have effects which will not be reparable. Stopping experiments which have already invested a lot of money in preparation would be pure waste. Also sacking scientists and paying them the unemployment dole instead of the not really lavish salaries would also be a waste considering that they also teach students. And finally, spending billions on saving companies which had previously gave out billions to their shareholders in stock buyouts while destroying science because of stinginess would be a very bad investment in our common future.

Sadly, I can't say I have had a week as intense as this, but on my busiest college weeks, I probably reached about 80% of this. I have no idea where that drive has went, because these days I feel like I do nothing again. I suppose that's half the fight; finding the drive when you don't have grade deadlines or work deadlines. Finding the passion, etc. She has the passion I wish I had, and I think that is the fundamental difference between her right now, with this schedule - and people like us. It's a quality definitely worth commending.

I learned a trick years ago for proofreading. It's best explained as if the document is printed on paper:
Rotate through 180 degrees the stack of pages (or just the one if that's all there is) so that the first word is located at the bottom right instead of the upper left. Now, read out loud from bottom to top and right to left - in the original order. It won't be smooth but someone listening will hear the words in the right order. The point is that you'll be reading word-by-word instead of whole sentences and your brain will work harder being forced to pay closer attention to the text instead of just gliding across the sentences. You'll spot "precious" right away.
You've taught me a lot... I hope I've helped a bit in return.

It's funny, when you said you didn't like the writing part of your job it reminded me of when I was in school. I studied English and English Literature and the science kids were ALWAYS asking us for help with their papers. A few days later they would inevitably come around thanking us after their grades came in. Pro tip for the science nerds in school: get a few language nerd friends to help you proofread and edit your written assignments. We're typically pretty good and getting you to trim the fat, boost your arguments, and usually fix typos for free. 😊

@Dr. Becky: An optometrist once told me, when reading something close up (such as a book or laptop), you want to give your eyes a break every once in awhile by focusing far away. I recommend that you do not sit (so close) facing the wall because your eyes as a muscle will not have the opportunity to relax (de-focus). Also, feng shui says to sit with your back to the wall; to ensure no foes can sneak up behind you / give you a sense of security. Hopefully your room is big enough to move furniture around.
(truly enjoying your videos! Thanks for all your effort!)

I live in the SanJuan islands in the Northwestern corner of Washington St. Its incredibly clean and green here with a coastline that is golden-grey and colorfully rocky. The local deer come and go like accepted house hold dogs that roam their neighborhood freely. The island fox will eat from your hand and there are no predators that would alarm any human. The tumultuous weather if often interrupted by beautiful warm blue skies. Rarely to we see freezing temperatures in the winter but we have all 4 truly beautiful seasons. Never have I witnessed such s serine time on the island as I am witnessing now. My perception of my world is literally the making of it. But then Covid 19 has also changed our way of living world wide many here are struggling. You mentioned Galaxy Zoo in a few videos.
A former pupil of mine was a great fan of Queen and Brian May. When she heard of Galaxy Zoo, she joined up and set to work. In one picture something attracted her attention which made her ask that age-old but highly important question......”What is that?”
She got in touch with het supervisor and pointed out what she had seen but he had no idea either. Research was done, ideas put forward and conclusions drawn. That thing is now known in astronomical circles as Hanny’s Voorwerp which all goes to show that anybody with an inquisitive mind can make valuable contributions even though they lack a university degree in astronomy.
Hanny told me her story when I last saw her and it put a smile on my face. Sometimes teaching has its moments.

I luv the specific technical videos you make but these human insight ones are in my humble opinion are especially special. You're so young which is a gud thing. You couldn't have been where you are when l taught A & O-level physics at Tynemourh College in North Shields back in 1978-9. I wish l cud have ahown your videos to them as l had a number of really bright n capable young women that l still fondly remember after all these years. I wonder how things might be different if l cud have tapped into your intelligence, enthusiasm and cute beauty back then? It's water over the dam now. Here and now you are such a source of inspiration to so many. Oh it's cool to see you have a special friend? I'm happy for you but more happy for him as he's one of the luckiest bloats in the UK! 😘

I am just coming to the end of (the first) 5 months of hell, working at home in a house where I live alone.
Today I have already spoken to a real person face to face. This does not usually happen before I finish work at 6.
Humans didn't evolve to do this and I am only now starting to reach an imperfect accommodation with it.
I don't think I will ever go back to work in the head office of my employer which is 150 miles away. I hate the dull and overcrowded Home Counties and the only good thing about where my employer is based is that it is near the A1 Great North Road.
Your home is modern and neat and tidy. Mine is none of these things. But I also write for my living and I don't think your working environment gets the best out of you.
Offices have large desks, purpose-designed office chairs, PCs with a large screen, and preferably two, and good lighting for a reason.
I have been sitting here editing a series of complex documents which somebody has already struggled with over a laptop on their dining table, sitting at a normal low-backed dining chair.

Dr Becky, chances are you won't see this but nonetheless! I'm currently in year 10 at BSGD and we're in the middle of our space topic in physics, meaning my teacher mentioned your videos given you're an 'old girl'. Honestly, I've binged most of the videos you've made. You're AMAZING. I find it so motivating to see a woman who was once where I am now enjoying her work so greatly and also being very successful! We so often hear we can do anything if we put our minds to it but it's hard to believe without evidence, and you're the evidence! Thankyou so much for creating this content x

A recent poster’s question about how to help with Covid modelling reminded me of a program where people can donate spare CPU cycles when there computer is not being used. it’s a massively parallel processing program from Berkeley in the US called Berkeley Open Infrastructure Process Computing. Go to boinc.org to see how to participate. There are many science projects you can join and just let your computer grind away. It automatically downloads and uploads the datasets for processing and you can configure the amount of system resources and times for execution. My favorite top 3 projects are Einstein, climate prediction and Rosetta. They are respectively searching for new pulsars, a model for climate prediction and protein folding mismatches which what causes many diseases. I’ve been a member since 2010 and it’s nice to know I’m helping propel science in the world. I do know IBM is setting up a processing model, currrently in beta test, to map the Covid virus. Sorry for the pedantic advertisement, but it’s a way to help our scientific brethren while we’re all sitting at home.
