Watching this video while I wire up my new DIYRE G Bus comp to the patch bay. They were meticulous in recreating the original SSL circuit with a couple additional mods available. There's just no beating that sound and it seems like SSL didn't compromise on the 500 series version

wow, ok ! I'm totally surprised by the Wes Dione here.
I'm basically in agreement with what you guys heard (also heard the Dione was a touch louder at first).
To me, 500 series had a touch more snap on the drums, but the Origin was a touch richer or had more hi-mids which might be why it sounds like it has a fuller wider centre image. But other than that it's right on the money. It does the ssl bus thing. Totally useable.
Wes Dione now, nailed the sound, everything is there. To me it is just a little less smooth than the Origin frequency wise, Origin smooths everything out with it's glue, nothing abrasive. You guys referred to it as classic vs modern, which is right, but i just love the way SSL wraps everything up in that smooth yet defined professional finish.
Which reminds me, it's crazy but it's almost as if the SSL bus comp quantizes the audio ! The rhythm becomes locked to a grid, i suppose that effect could be due to how well it levels it all out and the envelope. The 500 series did that, i feel the Wes Dione a little bit less.
But as you guys said, all totally useable with good results.
Another great vid, cheers guys !

I heard the Origen sounding more like a record and the 500 things were stinking out more, even a little louder and separated. I liked the console sound more! It sounds more like a finessed track. Also the console has more that compression grab and glue effect! All day the console

I think the High Pass filter slope is slightly different on the 500 series but not enough to matter. It subtle and in a full mix both are perfectly fine. It could also be the voltage & power differences between the 500 series and the desk. But SSL have always been good about making consistent gear. Before SSL came along you had companies like MCI, Neve and Harrison all building consoles and gear that would vary quiet a bit. But along comes SSL with ICs and VCAs and builds consoles, with dynamics, and EQ. A 4000 E or G used in a session in Nashville could be recalled on any New York or London SSL desk of the same flavor. This wasn't always the case for other companies. Thats why even Neve, ATI, and others started moving toward consistent parts supply.

They're close, but there are differences. In my opinion between the two SSL's, the console sounds a bit snappier, and arguably the timing / curve on the release is slightly favored for me on the console...it's subjective though. I own two racks of WesAudio kit, and Dave, your assessment of the Dione is basically spot on. The Wesauduio sound tends to lean more modern than classic. Fully enjoy both of your perspectives.

They all sound great. The Dion seems to add a touch in the mid to high frequency. Kinda makes the vocals slightly nasaly.
The recall ability is sure tempting though

Is there an inline preamp in the console the signal runs through before it gets to the bus compressor? The 500 series compressor and the console compressor sound like the same compressor but there IS a difference and to me it sounds like a preamp. (I think) Consoles have active summing which means there is a preamp dedicated to taking the summed signal, which is quiet, and bringing it back up to appropriate loudness. If the Origin doesn't have a way to access the bus compressor directly, bypassing any preamps, it would seem logical that this preamp would be in the signal.

    • @MixingMusicAnalog
      @MixingMusicAnalog  Год назад

I think you are "over-thinking" it...LOL. The signal is running the same path before it hits each compressor.

Dave, I noticed when you switch between the track you tend to do it during part of a song transition or down beat. Would it not be better to do the switching during the middle of a phrase or unrhythmically with the song where you could actually hear if there is a difference, if there was one? another words not switching channels as channel switching is part of the song. I hope I did not sound offensive. If I did, it is not my intention. I am only trying to help. I love your videos and your channel. Maybe I am completely wrong. Please advise.

To me, the SSL compressors sounded identical. The WES had some kind of coloring, that I can’t fully pinpoint.
I‘d buy the SSL 500 series module, if I were in the market right now.

One thing I’ve noticed is that between hardware variants and plug-ins it’s tonal at this point. Almost something any eq could handle or different compressor.

If you listen to the kick, there's a difference in the low end. 500< Origin< Dione . Would use the Dione on my drumbus and the Origin on 2bus, Origin glues more.

Between the SSL comps i heard the snare a bit different as well, in my opinion the desk compressor focused the snare to the middle a hair more. If it wasnt something i normally listen for i wouldnt have noticed. The Dione to me i heard what Dave was hearing that its more open, its more noticeable in the beginning with just drums and the snare top end and tail. With the thd circuit engaged i could hear it in the hihat and snare, sounded like it softened the transient just a bit and it sizzles the hats a bit more, i didnt prefer it on this track. In terms of the dione, it actually reminds me of the SSL bus+, with and without the distortion engaged, respectively. The dione and bus+ would be an interesting comparison even though they are not feature matched.

I like the tone/soundscape detail of the 500 (especially the vocals) but the console does have a snap. Listening on an iPhone 13 maxx. Volume is one notch below max volume. Dione : didn’t like the tone of the vocals compared to the ssl . This narrows and squeezes the soundscape. Something in the 500-1000 hz range is rattling this iPhone in an unpleasing way. This doesn’t happen on the ssl. Especially the 500. The THD kindve fixes the tone and makes tone wise to ssl, but at a loss of detail.

IGS buss comp and Smart blow them all away. I have owned them all. I will take IGS and smart over SSL any day. SSL with 500 series hardware are basically all integrated circuits. Integrated circuits = just slightly better than plug in. You got to buy the brands that hare hand built vintage style if you want real analog sound. Old school circuits.
