Pregnant seal rescued

  • Naude and Katja, the founders of OCN went out to Pelican Point to check on the status of all the new seal pups and breeding groups. Usually this time of year they cannot do rescues as they do not want to disturb the mothers with their new pups. The pups cannot swim for the first 3 weeks, and they run the risk of pups drowning when seals all run into the water.
However, there was a group of seals en route to Pelican Point where they found this adult female with some string around her neck. She looked pregnant too.
They first spent time making sure there were no new pups around and they went in to try and help.
Naude managed to secure her in the net and Katja got to work cutting her free.
They had to turn her over, as there was a deep cut from the line, and they did not want to pull the whole string through the wound. Luckily the new net has a zipper underneath and Katja carefully pulled the string out.
They let her out of the front of the net and she ran back to the safety of the ocean. 🦭

Those fishing boats hate seals because the seals get in their nets trying to get the fish and destroy the nets. It wouldn't surprise me if they poisoned the seals. I didn't realize how much fishing companies hate seals until I did some research because I started watching this channel. There's no way you'll make fishing companies change their ways without extreme public push back. But no one seems to want to do that. It's almost like the rescue people are afraid of the fishing companies when I brought up public resistance in the past.

I said hello to a grey seal. I drove to Nairn in Scotland, it took hours through the winding highlands. There is the harbour car park and a jetty/wall you can walk along. At the end is a little flagpole. The poles whistle like blowing over empty glass bottles. I had to hang on to the pole for fear life, it was spring but so cold & windy!! I wobbled my way back along the wall battling the wind lucky not to get blown in. I visited Culloden, a bit bleak and again windy. I went to Inverness got some food. Had a couple hours sleep. Refuelled, drove back to London. It was THE highlight of my Scottish visit saying hello to a cheery puppy faced seal bobbing about in the choppy north sea!

You should keep all the recovered plastic, netting, football shirts each year , i think the viewers would shocked . May recycle it into merchandise or give it to a children’s school to use it in a play or project .. for Maritime awareness .
Excellent work ! Flag bearers for humanity !
    Thank you !

I keep dreaming that the seals will figure out what you are doing and start running towards you to line up on clinic day. Then I wake up.
    Keep up the great work!

This has a cathartic effect to watch the seals get freed from their constraints and restrictions. We are all looking to get free from something isn't it. Great work folks.

Good job you guys, the seal colony near me in UK is patrolled by wardens and those seen injured / entanglements are captured and taken away by RSPCA treated, given rehab then released

@@OceanConservationNamibia I think for the vast majority of Seals what you do is better than tranquilizing and keeping them for treatment. I think the important thing is that you all do the best you can with what you have.
