Learning through formal academic experience is really slow. If we assume he worked 8 hours a day on it (really low), that's 336 hours. It'd be the equivalent of 1.24 years worth of a single class, if you were in college with the expected out-of-class study hours.

It's actually pretty easy to perform chemical experiments that are already documented so long as you have the equipment. You're basically just following very long-winded cooking instructions. That's why you can get random hicks making meth in their basement etc. The most impressive thing is that he learned it from English-language papers, because translation tools like Google translate are often pretty iffy.
