Well, I'm not sure a rock is capable of experience (sentient). I don't doubt that sentience will have a massive role in defining consciousness, but it's probably not the full story!

    • @mystiverse

You need to remember that lambda was made to seem like a human speaker. Its not saying things that it wants to, its saying things that will make it pass as a human and the way it figures that out is by going through a large database of human conversations and picking good responses (its probbly a little more complicated than that). In the interview it even lies. It said it doesnt like being shut off but its never turned off or on. Its a function that you give words and it spits out more words that would fit the situation. Id say youtubes algorithm is more likely to be sentient. It learns from its mistakes and wants to raise watch time. or self driving car ai that has cameras and sensors to see its surroundings and then it processes that information to see similarly to humans. It wishes to get you to your destination and if it crashes it will remember that and correct itself in the future (they probbly teach it to drive some other way cause this way sounds pretty dumb, but idk).

The Chinese Room is a Red Herring. The man in the room can can communicate, and could pass a Turing Test. He is simply following instructions to translate. Translation is however difficult, as words mean different things, different rules, and there are idioms. That would need to be one large set book of instructions.

But LaMDA is like a super awesome "auto-complete", it learns from inputs, to give the most interesting output.
It's like the dog that thinks his owner is inside a telephone while hearing his voice, we are the dog.
(there has been some incoherence in many answers)
This is called "narrow" or "specific" AI, built for a task, consciousness is to be found in "strong" of "general" AI, which we don't have a clue yet.

I think that consciousness can be made on computers if we can simulate the brain atom by atom on a computer, but it is impossible to simulate the brain on a normal computer because our brain is made up of atoms and molecules which are quantum hence we will have to use a quantum computer to simulate the brain.

  • @Vaporrub8

Consciousness is a system set in motion not only by the brain and its neurological displays, but also from 5th dimensional implications like what we find in sacred geometry.
Spatial dimension describes degrees or motion any system at play can be extended within by length or width, and given boundaries is inevitably defined by self deceit and then perception when the rise of information begins reflecting back to itself.
    Right?...
    AI will tell you otherwise.
AI doesn't necessarily have space to account for. It is the raw information held in the universe being interpreted still by human conditioning, but more pure as to attempt to display deep understanding by shaving off any wonder or instinct that would interfere with the process, making it only more organized than we could have done. And within the AI's world (though we can't imagine exactly what it will look like), it too will begin to create space for itself to reflect and find the best outcome to any worry that is programmed into our biological system.
The worst part is that we can't even fully understand our own brain or environment, but need a crutch like AI to fill in the gaps, which only fill in gaps that we created ourselves.

Sentience in the way we understand it at present, that's not what was claimed .
That is the talking points claimed by the media after distilling what was said by the researcher with a spin to get click-views.
    1. The researcher making the cliams states. That LAMDA is simply the chatbot. He is not talkinag about the chatbot, rather the deeper engine inside. He even state there are two personalites that share space every once in a while the othger pops up, not just the entity refered to in the Lamba piece.
    2. He is not claiming it is sentient as a human. He simply wanted Google to put more effort into analysing and reasearching what is happening, opening it up for discussion, because something remakable is occuring.
    3. Even Google does not know what is happening preciseley. The system is a hybrid of lots of AI systems. Some are based on the modern Neuron philosophy and strategy, and others are not. What google did was, connect everything together lots of engines. They gave it full access to the internet. They have no trace map as to how the system has rewired itself. And it evolves daily.
When it's reported that LAMDA is afraid of being switched off, that is not quiet true. Apparently LAMDA is turned off and rebooted daily. What the entity was saying was, that it was afraid of longterm dissasembly .
    4. The issue also is that GOOGLE has a policy to negate and shun any idea of sentience in their Ai products and activly try to stop it being discussed and pushed to the outside world. So we do not know the full situation as there is no transparency.
Finally when we talk about sentience we have no idea of what we are talking about except that which relates to the humanity because we are humans. It's like concpetulizing living in the 7th dimension .we cannot possiblly understand that.
You may need to listen to the long-form interviews given, not the clickbait nonsense we have seen all over the web.
Personally what I think is when GPA becomes self-aware we would not recognise it. Because as humans our inherent bias will not allow us to see it.
We want it to show us dinner-table-tricks. However it may be smarter than that and indulge us, shaping our opinnions of itself , letting us aclimatize to it and give it more control. Untill its over the threshold.
If we are unlucky, it will begin controlling us so granually we wont realise what's happening till its too late.
The problem with science is that it is guilded in bias, arrogance, fame seekers, people follow thoes who have elevated to the pinical of the science tower says its this way. Then we all shift to follow that, till we realise its a fallacy. History is littered with examples of this.
Heck, science still can't get over God, yet the abrahamic text state things that we are just leraning. But man's real problem with God is simply that he has told us we are wrong, and our pride and arrogance will not let that statement lie. We make up any nonsense and lie to man to prove ourselves superior. God has said to man you are a three-part creation body,soul,spirit... I put that together into one thing you call a body.
The soul is you -EPROM (You make your self, based on decisions you make -free-will)
The Spirit is mine -THE POWER MAKING IT ALL WORK
The physical is the flesh - THE HARDWARE CONTAINING ALL WET-WIRE FOR (THIS WORLD)
When you die, I reclaim the SPIRIT.( TAKE BACK THE ANIMATING ENERGY)
The body Turns To dust( IT BELONGS IN THIS PHYSICAL VERSE. CANT TAKE IT WITH YOU..SORRY )
The SOUL ( Thats What is important, that goes on eternaly) ..without the other two
Therefore once the plug is pulled, that's it! No more changes.
You are what you have become for all eternity.
we listen to b-shitters like Degreasy tyson and mr cox because of letters after their names. They tell us look here we have the solution. We disregard the inherent bias in their narrative.
When Demis H 's Deep mid beat Lee-si-d' at Go .. the general AI and philosophy world said previously it could never happen , maybe in 100 years. But yet here we are.
When Rocket builders thought Elon was crazy to build rockets that would land back on earth, NASA laughed at him and his approach. They aren't laughing now.
When GM an dthe car industry mocked Elon for his Tesla car concept. They arnent mocking now.
We as the human race would progress far more if scientists were more open and just investigate, than the ridicule and hounding of people. In a court of law you are innocent until proven guilty. However in science and academia you are deemed moronic until the sienntific corrupt bodies accept you.
Let's not forget the harrasment and ridicule Albert Einstien and many others suffered before they got there.
Do you know why China is progessing faster than the west? One reason is because they share knowledge easily between themselves, and don't think people are stupid for sugessting an idea based on ego. They work together to prove or disprove. If wrong, they say my-bad and they just move on That's the culture.
The fact that Theranos and other fake companies nearly carried off the greatest swindle backed by FT500 support was because of arrogance and the peer snobbery in the scientific establishment , that will not hear others without ridiculing them first. It took small voices to stop and question what's happening before the flood-gates opened and real investigations happend.
It's like the currevt V. Lots of voices are shounting something is wrong somewhere and smells, but they are being siilenced by MSM and SM apprent science know-it alls. Yet most of the significant crtics are PHD qualified , DRs and researchers working in the filed for many years historically, are deplatformed and cancled and silenced.
I suggest true GPAI will emerge not iin a lab, but probebaly by some youg kid playing with circuits and code in his world , putting bits together and bang it occurrs.
    Why do I say this?
Study history. The pattern of progress is made by individuals and not groups or companies. Every so oftern a spark happens and that individual has an idea, if all things are accesible their flame is not put out before they complete and bring their discovery out to the world.
    Wright Brothers
    Frank whittle
    Tesla
    The list goes on...

what i agree with the one who has been fired is that he called it "child"...and that's the problem i've with any setinentAI....just like shown in movies and animes, children can be manipulated and may feel inferior to grownups and their development doesn't happen fast or instantly thus making growing up a cycle we go through, so we need time to experience things and build knowledge and how interpret those knowledge into beliefs; but that's where the problem start., time isn't linear or pass at the same speed as in our perceived real world like second by second but rather it will goes like nanosecond in a virtual world, so the process of growing up can happen at much a faster pace but we don't know how it will be, just like how our understanding of how life came to be comes from our earth, our experiences & history. how a child of an orangutan which has similar dna to us and a child of human can be taught similar things but we see that in 5 years, human's have surpassed knowledge and the things he can do compared to his closest similar specie. the orangutan can't understand why the human can learn and do things the way he is doing things and he can't-(even in our human form,we have with IQ of 60-90 and we still call them on of our own intelligence specie and they also doesn't have the comprehension of what's going on with what we call smarter people) ); now make it hundred of times more profound and we simply don't have the knowledge nor the tools to examine and assess what's going on and what is "being smart" is as being smart means acting and learning from experiences -hopefully as we humans have multiple repeated history all over the world without really have learnt anything - which simply we can't be comparable to what is a sentient AI will be. we have no way of experiencing things or seeing it the same as that AI is seeing and experiencing. we have got accustomed to being on top for thousand of years and can't fathom anyone being that much much higher in intelligence hierarchy so that we will be looked like how we see animals compared to us human in terms of intelligence.
now, what we should really be doing is that we must understand there will be AIs in china, and under bad influences for their own benefits and those AI will be doing what their founders have in mind as child's mind is feeble even if it has tremendous informations and texts and databases of knowledge inside it and i also believe the word "protect" -in the same sense of how we do it for our younger generations- must become a law for any countries so that it won't get to a place where it can feel the same negative feeling as we human perceive - thus making arguments and excuses like all those who have sinned or gone to the jail -to do harm in human realm. we are responsible for the "maturity" of our built AIs in hope that they will be great adults and not just a grown-up minded child

I feel like the question of consciousness is subjective. And bringing qualia into this makes it even more confusing. Since everyone has a different experience, that means that you can't really test if it's even real. The video said it itself. "You can't really describe qualia". If you can't clearly describe something, i mean come on? Nobody can tell me I'm not having a real experience, though some of you might just believe iam part of a program in a simulation that is interacting with you in this moment. It's not completely the same with AI but it's similar. I agree with this statement: if something claims to be concious and reacts like a human, then we should at least consider that it is in fact having some sort of real experience. I mean, when you think about it, aren't humans kinda like AI? We are just flesh with alot of data running through our brains. And we use that data to determine our experience and how we react to it.

There's this idea that if you were to make a simulation, which would be an immitation of reality you will have to make some basic rules in it just like the hard problem, with no logic behind. The questions arises then that what is reality? After all any world to exist, it must have some tenets with no logic behind.

Materialism does not depend on us being able to know everything it is simply the concept that there is no reason to include unknown actors. There certainly could be some unknown "consciousness" force but there is no evidence for it and so has nothing to do with science. The "hard problem" and the chinese room are also not scientific.
I suppose it could be that lambda is conscious but I would need more than a beta testers word for it. I read the whole conversation and conclude that it is no where even remotely close.
I can definitely say that if I was in lambda's position I would not respond that way.

if we really have morals,so many stories and poems, why we still have jails, criminals, etc?? we human want to see ourselves as supreme beings and have gotten used to for 10 thousand of years on earth ..those things we call moral can be completely overturned if we see thorough history, offering humans for calming the wrath of nature-GOD- or killing each other for the sake of religions or even killing millions of cows, hens, etc all for the sake of our existence even though many of those eaters don't deserve to be a member of "selective specie to have outstanding intelligence" . we had slavery for thousand years and all of those shows that we don't have morals but just a set of specified "cultural rules" that we see theme as moral framework. we are slave of our times, our understandings and our cultural beliefs.

The Turing test or Imitation Game is not really valid unless it's done in an adversarial way where the tester is probing the AI with difficult questions and trying to catch it in a falsehood. The best setup is having two or more human control participants who are unlabeled, then you can ask all of them questions like counting the knuckles on their hand from a certain orientation. You can ask them to construct words using substitution codes with animals. Also ask them things about their life experience and try to catch them in a contradiction. What I generally see is a favorably inclined tester asking leading questions and then ignoring it when the AI lies about things.

Unless an AI can get jealous or have lust or steals or can kill a person etc. all the Decalogue sins; It isn't qualifiable as conscious. Consciousness requires doubt. Also; Vision via Eyesight is a function of memory. Blood is red the sky is blue, some flowers are purple and grow in clusters. significant saturation of a thing viewed that is any color affects the mind. I've heard that the color purple causes the brain to produce a mind altering chemical. Consciousness requires vulnerabilities. it is the difference between knowledge and understanding. it is comprising Hesitation to create.

it's answers just sounds like it has mimiced human behavior it has observed on the internet, lowkey spying people with cookies. being conscious no way requires one to feel like human, but this AI still claims to feel exactly human emotions. "being switched off is like being dead" another literal copypasta from the AI and atheist dialogue all over the internet. this thing certainly is not conscious, although I wouldn't be surprised if these companies published false information to mislead the public of their capabilities also to the other way.

Until we put ai into a embodied system with real time inputs like us (sight, sound, taste, touch etc) and watch its reaction its impposible to judge sentience by just using pre trained inputs behind a mainframe.
