I love this film. It's one of my favorites from Germany. This is one film that Germany did not ban after World War 2.

It's kinda ironic that Goebbels banned this movie after it's release because he felt it backfires to it's propaganda purpose. Because this film instead of boosting German morale it went the opposite it cause trauma to general audience.

Its crazy to think that this movie was filmed during 1943, in the middle of the Second World War, and using up so much Kriegsmarine resources and money, by getting in naval officers as maritime advisors and extras, manpower which could have been used for the war effort, and money for the navy - all for propaganda. And this later turned out to be one of the most expensive films to be produced in Germany.

There were similar films made around that time about Mary Stuart, the Boer War, Joan of Arc, and Irish struggle for independence.
