  • A farmer spoke to us about his experiences growing for supermarkets - but only on the condition that it was anonymous. He grew 60 tonnes of salad potatoes for a large UK supermarket. Upon harvest, the supermarket decided they were no longer interested in that specific variety, and cancelled the order - leaving a huge amount of food with no home, and the farmer financially screwed.

Great news. We need more independent growers, buyers, suppliers & distribution centres so the public consumers can choose who, what, where & how they buy produce!

Name and shame the supermarkets. Lets get the names of the bad actors out there and make it known we'll shop elsewhere. The only way to make change is to hit them in the pocket.

we know the names - it's the big supermarkets, the most 'successful' ones. but people will not shop elsewhere, cause it's so convenient.

Could Riverford collaborate with British non-organic family farms also and take as much business away from the supermarkets as possible? The only language these corporates (such as Blackrock and Vanguard who have the monopoly and own practically all the supermarkets) understand is money. This is a war to save real food. Else we’ll be left with only artificial non food substitutes!

I can understand what a difficult situation this must have been. What happened to the potatoes though - hopefully they were not literally wasted?

Name the one that did this. There are many who will contact them and not shop there.

Yes, they deserve to be shamed! NAME THEM!
Aren’t they bound by legal contract to buy 60 tonnes of potatoes if they order them? If not why not?
