Very nice lesson! Well done and clear... It may be good for many aspiring guitarists to understand that the solo is comprised of chord fragments of alternate shapes of A , D , E , A .... It took me a long time to understand that there are four and five positions to play the same chord up the neck, and that using these other forms creates great texture and fills - as so beautifully illustrated here!
Many thanks Damien from Wexford,Ireland. Takin' part in a Buddy Holly tribute night on Friday here so this is a huge help. Thanks again, take care talk soon
This is not very easy for me, but it is certainly a very thorough lesson on the correct Buddy Holly way of playing this great tune and I am determined to learn it right.
I'ver never seen anyone do the A chord like you do...except me,I've been playing it like that for years..much easier and so much more versatile in terms of hopw qyuckly you can go someplace else on the neck. Love that While Falcon ..thankns for the song..It's all in the strumming with Buddy.
Great lesson.I rarely see two identical instructions on this song. Here is another good version, IMO.E chord two down strokes, A chord up/down up/down, Esus up/down/up, E chord two downstrokes.Total 11 strums. The Esus can be either the two or three note version, both on the 2nd fret. When the song moves to the A-D-A, the same strum pattern using A, D,Asus,A.The Asus is the form on the second and third fret.(second string third fret, third string second fret, fourth string second fret)
Hey mate will buy your DVD , I loved your video on this it was really good you didn’t try to over complicate things and it was straight into the lesson instead of dribbling on and on like other channels , also the way you filmed your self playing it wasn’t perfect, and it was like sitting with someone and having a jam I really loved this , mate you are an awesome guitarist and I absolutely love the way you teach I’ve have subscribed and finally found a great teacher thank you so much for sharing your knowledge look forward to watching all of your vids buying your dvds and staying subscribed cheers mate Awesome 👏🇦🇺
Thanks for that bro(: I'm doing a rockabilly set list of 10songs at the end of the month and after seeing your video, i am DEFINATELY gonna do this song :D thanks for th tutorial :D And also shes a pretty nice guitar you got there(:
A nice interpretation. I tried for a year to get my band to play something close to Buddy Holly’s version, but all they could do, or wanted to do, was the Stones version. I wish I had found your lesson, Damian, to convince them there was a better way to do it. I finally quit the band.
i think your playing is brilliant, can play stones version, but am having a few problems getting down that strumming pattern ,any indication on the pattern would be a good help . ps had to buy a gretsch after watching this ,arrives next week..cheers
Awesome. I should be receiving the dvd in a few weeks. Does anyone know the up/down pattern Damian is using.... I keep sounding like the clash and I cant see what I´m missing?
great song, great lesson. had me up and running with the song in no time, thanks. what size strings are you using? they look really big on that good sounding gretsch.
I think it would sound cool using flat wound strings. Other fellow thought your strings looked big. Imo, they don't. I'm curious as what gauge. And I can't play good, never did and now both my hands and fingers have started in with trigger fingers etc. I'm picking but wear out real fast. Again, great lesson.☮️😎
Most musicians would recognize that Bo Diddley originated that distinctive rhythm pattern. But nice to point that out. I respect both artists for what they accomplished, in an era when there was so much mismanagement and malfeasance.
Damian!!! You have a strat right behind you. Doing Buddy Holly shouldn't you use a strat? Don't get me wrong if I had a White Falcon I'd never put it down
Maybe it's because he considers it a "rockabilly ' song and maybe the Gretsch is better suited for rockabilly ? But, I would have used the Strat also... and I own both a Strat and a Gretsch (G2520T)
Go to the fork in the road and turn when you get a ways up you see three roads on your left take the one you have to and about a mile before where the farm was 50 years ago turn and go a little further and you'll take the second orr third turn then you'll just have to watch for the mail box. The name isn't on it and I forget the number but you can't miss it. GET IT?
Must be 1980s telly advert day aer kid....i literally just 10 mins commented on another of this guys rockabilly videos that the melody he shows sounds like the 1980s Meow Mix advert. Being from Florida he won't have a clue what i'm on about....saying that, i'd be surprised if anybody else remembers that advert.
It was a UK tv advert in the 1980s for Scotch video tapes....a skeleton kept repeating "Re-record, not fade away" in a parody of this song, Not Fade Away. Implying that scotch vhs tapes would last for many years of being recorded and re-recorded on......you can sleep at night now mate.
i think your playing is brilliant, can play stones version, but am having a few problems getting down that strumming pattern ,any indication on the pattern would be a good help . ps had to buy a gretsch after watching this ,arrives next week..cheers
Thanks! A nice simple riff that sounds great. It would have taken me a long time to figure that out by ear....
Man! Look at that young guy! Just dropped by to refresh my memory on the solo 🎸
Seems like forever ago. That was my original backroom at my old place and I was a new Dad. Good times back then for sure :)

This is not very easy for me, but it is certainly a very thorough lesson on the correct Buddy Holly way of playing this great tune and I am determined to learn it right.

Damian,
You have a great teaching style. Could you do a lesson on Eddie Cochran's "20 Flight Rock"?
Thanks
Great lesson; I don’t think I’ll ever learn how to do it right, though, but no fault of yours.
You'll get it. Keep at it. Cheers & keep on rockin' :)
awesome.
Hey man, great lesson I really appreciate it. Also, that guitar has a nice tawngy kick to it sounds really good.
Thanks for that bro(: I'm doing a rockabilly set list of 10songs at the end of the month and after seeing your video, i am DEFINATELY gonna do this song :D thanks for th tutorial :D And also shes a pretty nice guitar you got there(:

In my opinion the Stones version is superior, due mainly to Brian Jones's harmonica playing.
Thanx for the lesson dude I for one am a huge buddy Holly fan and will be practicing this until I've nailed it to a T..:)
Nice work on a nice Falcon
Thank you :)
Great. Thanks.
Well done
Thanks a lot pal! Great job!
beautiful guitar. gotta go work on my rhythm.
i think your playing is brilliant, can play stones version, but am having a few problems getting down that strumming pattern ,any indication on the pattern would be a good help . ps had to buy a gretsch after watching this ,arrives next week..cheers
buddy still alive
muito bom mesmo. valeu pela dica
You Rock ! Many Thanks...
Your rhythm is awesome on this. How do you keep your right wrist so loose and fluid without the pick immediately falling out of your hand?
SOLI DEO GLORIA!

Great tutorial..What model Gretsch are you using? Beautiful guitar! Thx!
Love that white falcon
Great lesson .thanks.... If there was no buddy holly there would be no rock and roll
Awesome. I should be receiving the dvd in a few weeks. Does anyone know the up/down pattern Damian is using.... I keep sounding like the clash and I cant see what I´m missing?
great song, great lesson. had me up and running with the song in no time, thanks.

Schön ( Nice ) your Play
Don't tell me my man your pop's loved golden oldies and Buddy. I got a sweet buddy Holly traditional style tattoo recently.
love the falcon bro
how do you get that crazy guitar sound :D it's realy chill, but i can't tune mine like that :( help me please :) thanks, ps great vid. dude :D
Nice tutorial. Surprised though you didn't include props to the Bo Diddley strum.
Most musicians would recognize that Bo Diddley originated that distinctive rhythm pattern. But nice to point that out. I respect both artists for what they accomplished, in an era when there was so much mismanagement and malfeasance.
Maybe because it’s not the Bo Diddley beat.
Damian!!!
You have a strat right behind you. Doing Buddy Holly shouldn't you use a strat? Don't get me wrong if I had a White Falcon I'd never put it down
I wish you were my neighbor. Lol
Thanks for watching the lesson :)
Nice guitar O.o
Aye this is Guid for me...thanks
What kind of axe is that bro, it looks o'right
Yup- thanx
I wish you would've played the fender for this. Nonethe less,, sounds good.
good video but why didnt you use the strat in the back cause i mean thats what buddy played
Maybe it's because he considers it a "rockabilly ' song and maybe the Gretsch is better suited for rockabilly ? But, I would have used the Strat also... and I own both a Strat and a Gretsch (G2520T)
Better than original
Thank you for watching Tim :)
youre actually hitting A too early because "im gonna tell" part starts with E.
Go to the fork in the road and turn when you get a ways up you see three roads on your left take the one you have to and about a mile before where the farm was 50 years ago turn and go a little further and you'll take the second orr third turn then you'll just have to watch for the mail box. Why do you sound like an old am radio broadcast out in the middle of nowhere?

Buddy Holly must be spinning in his grave!
