  • A walk in the rain from Parc Calon Lan Blaengarw, along the hillside to Pontycymer.
It would have been further but the rain and mud shortened the walk.

The walk around the Garw Valley from Parc Calon Lon is about 5 miles, 8 km.
However, due to the very wet, I have split it up into two parts.
Part 1 takes you from Parc Calon Lan (Free Parking) across the river and up the hill into the woods. You then head down the valley, towards Pontycymmer. The western side of the valley.
I then walk back along the river to Parc Calon Lan (just over 2 miles).
However, the map and walk continue up the valley's eastern side and back up to Blaengarw and Parc Calon Lon. This will be in part 2 of the walk.

Well done, Sir, for completing your walk (on our behalf!) in such extreme rain. I grew up in Nantymoel, just over the mountain from Blaengarw, but have lived in Oxford for many years so avoid much of the awful weather.

Luckily, the wind didn't pick up until I was heading back down the valley. Rain and wind is not good.

Hi Marcus, great to see the walks back.
I loved watching this not because of the dreadful weather you had to put up with (you are a brave man), but because I grew up in Blaengarw and Pontycymer so seeing places I know so well through someone else's eyes was great (even if you could not see very far). I moved out 20 years ago and there were no trails marked then, but I have been back since and I look forward to seeing the next walks.
The statue of the bird was "Keeper of the Song" and is part of the Nature Keeper’s oak sculptures by Bridgend Council. a series of 15 sculptures around Bridgend. More info can be found on the council website if you search for nature keepers.
Just a few suggestions for future walks here:-
Where your walk starts if you turn right and then up Pwllcarn Terrace or 'Carn Houses' we used to call it, there is a great forest walk which goes up then left before coming back down through Garw Fechan to Pont-y-rhyl or the Pont-y-Rhyl to Bridgend Road back to Pontycymer. Very enjoyable in good weather!
On the walk to the other side of the valley, a good starting point is through Waun Bant from Pontycymer square, past the Rugby Field (Lawrence Park) and there is a good path that meets with the sharp left turn on your marked walk.
On this part of the walk, you may see the old colliery reservoir. There are also two abandoned boilers alongside the river (well hidden) and also a nice waterfall. I walked this again a few years ago and they are still there.
Whatever you choose I know it will be entertaining.
    Keep up the good work!

@@marcuswalks I usually come off the path a bit further down and ride on the road past the old Brachycummer (probably spelt wrong) pub and join the forestry further up on the left

Hello from the States. Enjoy watching your walking videos. Do you have a pair of boots for walking in the wet and rain and another pair for dry weather? Walking in the rain isn’t too bad as long as it’s not a cold rain. Better than walking thru snow. You should stop by a nice pub for lunch and a pint and sit next to the fire to warm up and dry off. Stay safe, keep dry and be well.

Yep, I do have a pair of shoes for drier weather. I found the boots had crack in them! Luckily, it wasn't that cold.

Mel doesn't like walking when Marcus is videoing. She finds all the stopping and starting, and the reframing of shots to be an absolute boor. Also, Marcus can be a bit tight and is reluctant to splash out on buying Mel the odd treat.
I know Mel is prone to moaning at times but who can blame her.

All those cruising and Sunday dining videos on your other channel have had a negative impact on your core focus. I get the feeling people have drifted away. Maybe your content will improve come the better weather if you start doing more solo walks and exploring further afield. Porthcawl and its environs have been done to death.
