Saw the Elevators, the Sidewalks, years ago, played some bass with Lee Pence before I went to Vietnam, then he had a band called Bolla Hooker in Austin, didn't get to see him, don't know if Cal Stanton was drumming. Cal died. Lee died. They were fantastic players, people and friends. I was lost for a long time. I wish I could have found them after I found myself again. Steven Richard Turner
If I remember correctly, 1955 black and white movie "Creature With the Atom Brain" scared the shit out of me when I saw it. I would have been 7 yr old. Love those old B&W B sci-fi movies.
i got turned onto this guy by some hipsters. and with, genuinely, no offense intended to elder generations, i would trade his mind and his work for the entire body of classic rock without hesitation or regret. that said, i'm so very grateful for all of the more conventionally successful musicians who chose to use their voices and resources to champion his work and keep it alive. 🙏
Roky Erickson must have been a huge influence on the 'Meat Puppets'... The Meat Puppets had a very similar quirky style in almost every aspect. I like this stuff!
Stumbled upon this song accidentally. Excellent. Qaos55 is an incredibly big fan of psychedelic music especially a song like this the hearkens back to the original wave in the 1960s.
Buchanan is the gangster who hires the scientist to build his creatures with the atom brain... the first one is sent to some other gangster and Buchanan speaks to the gangster through the re-animated corpse ... he then breaks the gangster's back, and the henchmen say "Let us in, boss! Let us in boss!", and then they shoot the reainmated corpse that walks away. "Get into the automobile", the scientist tells the corpse. "Put the key in the ignition and drive away".
I wonder if she knew this song before hand, or if the writer or director of that show suggested it. Regardless, that's great that they employed this song in Hemlock Grove. It's fitting, because Erickson was referencing old horror films when he wrote lyrics for this album. Thanks for the info.
+Lily Glez' famke janssen singing in hemlock grove brought me here too! i liked the style of her song way better than this. i wonder if that was really famke's voice used in the show ?
I have never been so proud to be called a freak of nature in my life. Let that Deep Fried Freak Flag Fly. It's Solstice and No One stitches like WE do !
The song is great, and I think for years I thought it was a parody of 1950s low budget sci-fi. But then I found there's an actual movie with this name. To be clear, it could still be a parody. Truth is stranger than fiction, I would have bet no one was corny enough to name a movie Creature with the Atom Brain.
Some of his songs are weird and I liked his some of his songs! I picture in my mind Jack Black doing a biography movie portraying as Roky. He's goofy, but good funny actor-rocker!
+natebham I came here because I heard a busker performing this on my bus ride home after work! I liked it instantly, and it sounds even better with acoustic backing.
@Lewisownpeople nope I'm not sutdid, whatever that is. I do like this song a lot but I was saying that the movie Ccreature with the Atom Brain is awesome.
RIP Roky Erickson. Thank you for making my Halloween seasons awesome.
Hard to find a better Halloween album than this one.
Tom Waits's 'Bone Machine' is the only comparable "Halloween album" I can think of.
RIP Roky. This was the song that drew me towards you. Fly high.
such a great song
The entire album is fucking solid.

I’ve spent so many hours driving to jobs listening to late night radio. I can identify with this
Totally awesome they way they mixed the old news intro tune from AM radio. I used to listen to AM radio for the news in the 1980's and yeah!
If I remember correctly, 1955 black and white movie "Creature With the Atom Brain" scared the shit out of me when I saw it. I would have been 7 yr old. Love those old B&W B sci-fi movies.
I noticed that movie is here on YT. Is the song related to the movie?
@@drewgrows7765 Yes

Heard the news sad day today.
Long live Roky Erickson
Roky Erickson must have been a huge influence on the 'Meat Puppets'... The Meat Puppets had a very similar quirky style in almost every aspect. I like this stuff!
Rocky influenced many, very much the OG!!!!
Glad I got to see him in concert before he passed away. Rest In Peace Roky
You are quite fortunate-l wish l could have seen him in concert.
Truly great authentic musical maverick! The fact that he resembles Charles Manson somehow makes his songs even stranger and eerrier.
Manson was also a good musician
@@chrysalisstage I don't think HE was ever recorded, but HIS stuff has been covered by some other acts like Guns And Roses and Brian Wilson.
@@ianfindly3257 you can find HIS stuff on here and Spotify if you are interested
@@ianfindly3257 I have a bunch of his stuff on cd
@@chrysalisstage so true

How in the hell did she bring you here. I'm not being judgmental, I'm just curious. I love Erickson, and will ingest any aside.
Saltjunkie she sing this song in the second season of hemlock grove.

I like the part where he sang about a creature with the atom brain
I heard this on KROQ back in 1980 or 81 - I always thought some of the music had an almost Talking Heads/Brian Eno feel.
Good ol' Jed the Fish turned me on to this one! Thank you KROQ for influencing my musical taste back then.
Love this shit ! Roky Rules !
Buchanan with topo Chico and a twist of lime.....Patrick

I don't want to know what year this is from. It sounds ageless. Also, a great lead voice, better than some 80's HM frontmen.
