- CThe Needles Highway is a scenic 14 mile section of South Dakota Highway 87 through Custer State Park. The highway runs through the ponderosa pine and spruce forests and birch and aspen lined meadows of the Black Hills of southwest SD. The highway is named for the needle like granite spires that dominate the mountains near the western terminus. The highway is also part of the Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway. Norbeck was a former governor of South Dakota who personally laid out the route for the highway on foot and horseback. At the time it was said that the road "could not be built." Construction was completed in 1922.
Needles Highway is not suitable for RVs or some other large vehicles. There are two narrow tunnels and many tight twists and turns. Also note that accessing the road requires a Custer State Park vehicle license.

Man,I loved those tunnels. Just another reminder of the big beautiful country we live in! Very nice my friend.
Thanks my friend! Yeah the tunnels were so fun, the main reason I wanted to drive this road. The odd rock formations were an added bonus.
Very cool! The wife and I have a trip planned very shortly to fly into Denver and make a big loop starting at Toadstool then to Custer/Blackhills, Windcave, Badlands, Rushmore, then to Theodore Roosevelt, then to Devils Tower. If we don't run out of time we will hit Rocky Mountain National Park before flying back. Looks like you had a great trip! I am looking forward to checking it all out!
Thanks my friend! I hope you make it to all those stops. There’s never enough time though and so much to see out there.
What an awesome place, I have seen some videos of this place before, but your video was totally awesome...thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much, my friend. Glad you enjoyed it. This is a super awesome place, of course the video doesn’t do it justice!
Thanks for taking us on an epic tour and views. ✌
Thanks so much for checking it out!!!
Well done and nice background music. Looking forward to my September visit.
Thanks so much for checking out my video. Its an awesome place! Enjoy your trip!
Wow, you crammed a lot of scenery into a 4 minute video. That place looks great ✌
This drive was awesome. Every bend in the road brought some fantastic sights and scenery! Thanks for checking it out!
Very nice 👍. You got to see a lot of great places on your trip.
Thank you, my friend! We were so blessed to even be able to take this trip, and yes so many epic spots
Awesome as always…. Such spectacular views 🤩
This is a super neat place. Thanks so much for watching!!!
You should have blown the horn and see how high she would jump.... LOL That is such a cool place but usually jam packed with cars.. It did not look to bad on your visit..
Thanks for watching, my friend. Yeah wish I had one of those big truck horns LOL! It is a really cool place, glad we worked this in to our trip. It was pretty busy around the Needle Eye so I didn’t even bother to stop but otherwise it wasn’t too bad of traffic on most of the route.
Beautiful scenery.
Thank you, my friend!!!
what an awesome drive!
It was so cool and so fun! Thanks for watching, my friend!!!
Awesome, awesome, awesome !! Nice driving skills 😎 I wonder how many people come out with dings and scrapes lol Thanks for taking us along! 💚
Thank you so much!!! Yes this was an awesome place and a fun drive. My midsized truck slipped through just fine but I did see a few vehicles struggling, folding in their side mirrors and such. I did notice some paint marks on the tunnel walls so no doubt some larger cars and trucks no doubt dinged it
That was super cool!
It was neat and fun! Thanks for watching!!!
Beautiful country up there.
It really is a neat place. We almost missed this one but glad we decided to work it in to the itinerary. Thanks for watching, my friend!
Very cool. Custer is my next edit. Loved seeing it again through your eyes.
Thanks man! Yeah Custer was pretty awesome. I’d like to go there again in the future. Too much to see in one short visit. I been following along on some of your videos, looks like we hit some of the same spots on our respective trips. It is neat to see places from a different perspective or perhaps you saw some spots or trails we missed or vice versa
@@SmellNRoses It has been a fun year, hoping to knock out one more trip before it ends. I would still love to hit a trail with you sometime if our schedules align. Hope you have a great Labor Day weekend!
@@KeeFrHikes I definitely would love to hike with you sometime. Stay in touch we’ll make it happen.
Nice drive.
