Can this breed handle extreme Cold? Do they have both an undercoat & a Top coat of haircut? Knowing they are Italian sheep dogs they should be good for both high altitude & cold extremes

Can you make a video on how you keep them from getting urine stains on their flocks. I’m getting a puppy Bergamasco soon and really wanted to know. You sure get my thanks if you made a video on it.

Yes that is a great idea. I will do a short video on how we do a sanitary trim and some tricks to make it a little easier to keep urine off the coat. Thank you.

I always heard to only bathe Bermagascos twice a year. And that it takes 8 hrs to dry them. & to brush the face and head and ears to make ear care and eating easier.

You can bathe a Bergamasco as often as needed as long as you have a means to dry them as fully and quickly as possible. Investing in the right fan makes the difference. I bathe my dogs very often and they take different times to dry depending on how wooly the coat is. The more wooly ones take longer. My quickest coat to dry which is not very wooly only takes 2 hours max and faster if outside on a dry, warm day with the fan. My longest takes around 6 hours with 2 fans.

@@jeaninedellorfano198 for someone not extremely versed in the world of flocked coats, would you recommend just going to a groomer?

    • @mainelymoose1524
      @mainelymoose1524 Год назад

@@emilyjolly793 I wouldn't because most groomers will have never seen a Bergamasco and will not know how to work the coat. In addition the coat work in this breed needs to be done regularly at home, almost on a check on it daily basis so trying to execute it ll at once at a groomer would not really work.

Hi, Im also wondering about the dryer, to find one, what is the name of that type of dryer? have no idea what to search on. I have a bergamasco that can seem to be dry, but when he lays down OCH things it's totally wet 😅

E poi vi chiedete perchè stanno sparendo e ci sono solo 80 bergamaschi
registrati all enci ?
appassionati.

@@jeaninedellorfano198 Ciao Janine, tu parli italiano ? I don't want to offend or make unnecessary controversy but I must say that those long ropes all over the body (I don't know the English term, in italian "tacole") are not even a good standard even for beauty contests! such a dog should be penalized!
The standard (which no one follows) is clear: goat hair in the front half, sheep hair on the back that forms the characteristic notches that must be short, wide and flat, I want to explain to you a point of view of dog enthusiasts who at this moment represent a minority also in Italy, I'm not talking about hygiene but about the conservation of a millenary breed that risked extinction for the first time after the war, because the Bergamasco shepherd was considered a bastard group, a simple mix not worthy of being recognized as a breed. Now it risks becoming extinct because the few enthusiasts require hypertypical dogs, the result? People who only know the "Mop shepherd", potential breeders scared and the breed that is physically modified and limited in its use (only 80 dogs for breeding registered)
People believe the Bergamasco shepherd is not for everyone, not easy (and with that hair it's true), they consider it a show dog for rich eccentrics, This is to belittle a dog with fantastic skills and attitudes, resistant, agile and intelligent, It can be used as a shepherd conductor, for search and rescue, for sport, for drug hunting and whatever other "intelligent" sheepdogs do
In Italy the situation is ridiculous because the enci (national body for Italian dog lovers) manages the registry registers and organizes exhibitions and events almost exclusively of non-Italian breeds. There are dozens of ancient Italian breeds now reduced to 80 specimens that are waiting in vain for 20 years the recognition of the Enci, help to establish standards and select and manage the breeders ... For the few recognized breeds, either the standard is not respected or the same standard is used for very different types of dogs such as the Maremmano-Abruzzese. can I let you read some articles or see some nice videos?

@@matteomichielin7817 I speak Sicilian. My Italian is not as good :). I can understand what you write in Italian. I agree with everything you say and I am aware of all of it. Here there is a small governing body that had adopted the standard as per Maria Andreoli as the official AKC standard. I do not think we will ever be FCI standard because no one will agree. Here, in order to show the coat must be the full length for the age. I do not agree with it but we have no choice. Once our dogs are finished at shows, we cut the coat back, or the dogs who do not show are in a short coat. I have a beautiful male with natural doppio pelo. He will never do well at shows for that reason. In order to have a viable breeding population here, showing is important and so some dogs are in full coat for those years. I try to keep the coat as light as possible. Because so many dogs are in full coat in this country, people need to know how to keep them clean that is what this video is for. It is not to promote a full long coat, it is to help those that have these dogs to find ways to make sure they are fully dry. Just because the coat is full does not mean it should be dirty. I understand that this is a problem with show culture. Unfortunately, those of us trying to keep this breed going here need to participate on some level. In my 15 years breeding the PB, I am now breeding for lighter coats more in line with doppio pelo. My imports have helped with this transition back to proper coat but for the last 25 years in this country we have mainly only had access to very wooly and heavy coated dogs as they all came from the Dell'Albera kennel. Now with the increase of other lines here, our coats are improving.
