Great double reaction. The first video was from Legend 1999 at the end of June 2013 and that was the song's debut. Yui and Moa appearing was part of the concert storyline and didn't really fit with the song.
I don't believe they were actually playing piano at the end either - but the crystal piano they sat at was another of their homage's to Yoshiki and X Japan (as were the neck braces of course).
Su was not entirely happy with her performance. She felt she was concentrating more on hitting the notes and singing the right lyrics and that she didn't have the life experience to do the song the emotional justice.
It was for this reason that she decided she wasn't ready to record the song for the first album as well. Only when she saw people crying in the audience at a later performance did she realise she could effect people emotionally with her voice and only then did she agree to record the song - it was on the second album.
The song itself is an homage to or inspired by X Japan's classic 'Endless Rain'.
They pulled out all the stops, no expense spared, for Su's 20th birthday celebration in her home town Hiroshima with the live piano and strings (the only time I can think of where they have had those) and this is the definitive performance of this song.
They played an intro video before this performance as well which referenced the Hiroshima bomb and the black acid rain that fell afterwards and that only added to the emotion.
The video editing is also very good - it is not a coincidence that as Su sings the line "We shall never meet again, but I want to not forget you for ever" the camera focuses on Mikio Fujioka (RIP). This was his last performance with BABYMETAL before his tragic accident just two or three weeks later.
'No Rain, No Rainbow' has been performed live just 7 times. Legend 1999 June 2013, Budokan Black Night March 2014, Tokyo Dome 2016, both nights at Legend S December 2017 and two of the 10 Budokan shows in 2021. Those last two performances also had an intro video with a story about a piano and in those Su also sat at (and possibly played) the piano midway though the song before a significant (I think 17 second?) break in complete darkness and silence.

Su had a lot of emotion in the Legend S concert....it was extremely bittersweet as it was a massive concert for Su's 20th birthday in her hometown of Hiroshima, it was also the concert where Yui was deemed not healthy enough to perform and Su and Moa decided they would hold the concert as a duo.
Also, only a month later, guitarist Mikio passed away as well 😢, so this was his final performance with the Kami Band.

One of their least performed songs at only seven total performances. I suspect we will never get to see it live again. It sounds fairly 80's because it's a tribute to X Japan's "Endless Rain" from their 1989 album "Blue Blood". It's a pure 80's power ballad.
The is definitely a big difference in both the vocal performance and recording quality between the two performances. Su was obviously a lot younger and less experienced in 2013, and while she knocked it out of the park for her age, the extra five years of experience and maturity definitely made a huge difference to her performance.
The first performance was when they were still developing and proving themselves. It was in the days where they were just starting to professionally film their shows for DVD release, so the investment in production quality wasn't fully there yet. By 2018, they were a proven success and Amuse was willing to go all in to achieve the best production possible.
As you can see from the video Legend S was one of their most epic and spectacular shows despite the difficult circumstances under which it took place.
As much as I love the choreo, it's also cool to get to hear Su just fully focus on singing without any distractions and just put everything into the vocal performance.

I love a good ballad, so I was very glad to find out that BABYMETAL deliver in that area as well. The 2017 performance in particular is awesome. It’s been a few years and I watch BABYMETAL every day, and I have yet to make it past the last verse without tearing up. Su‘s eyes always get me.
But it‘s not just the vocals, I find the guitar parts very touching as well. Add to that that we are seeing Mikio in his last performance before his tragic passing…
There's an interesting background story to this: The song was actually ready to be released on the first album. But 16 year-old Su said that she didn't feel ready to sing the song the way that it would have to be performed. So it was postponed until the release of the second album. I find that a pretty stunning realization for a 16 year-old.

_No Rain, No Rainbow_ is an homage to *X Japan* and their song _Endless Rain._ At the Legend S concert in Hiroshima (which is where Su was born), the narrative frames the performance with references to the atomic bomb, and the song is sometimes said to be about that. But the lyrics are not really that specific. I always understood it to have more of a sad love theme, but Su herself has said:
_"You can interpret it in a romantic way but we like to think about it in a more open way. It is about simple human feelings of love and loss and how the value of certain things we have in life is only perceived in dark moments."_
While I believe Yui has had some training on the piano (and Moa the guitar) I think it's generally accepted that they do not actually play those instruments live. Or rather, they might be playing, but the sound is not part of the mix. It's just theatrics, and what we are hearing is 100% backtrack. I always found it a bit silly myself. And in the case of Moa playing Mikio's guitar on Shine, even a bit disrespectful. But others seem to appreciate the gesture, so I won't make a big fuss about it 🙂

I think in the Lore of the 2013 version, Yui and Moa were trapped in suspended animation maybe and Su had to sing her heart out to release them, even though she said later that she didn't feel the meaning of the song yet, so she thought about how sad she would be if Yui and Moa were not there like a true pro, but by the time Legend S rolled around she had a great grasp of everything about the song and how it related to her hometown, a place of a disaster with even worse side effects like black rain and no rainbows for a long time.

    Thanks for this reaction.
This is a song which has a pretty direct connection to X-Japan. It starts with the name.
Some people think, maybe X-Japan's Endless Rain was inspired by Prince's Purple Rain and Guns N' Roses' November Rain was inspired by either or both of them.
But what is clear: Babymetal's No Rain, No Rainbow is connected to X-Japan's Endless Rain. They've had nods to X-Japan in multiple songs.
However, have to say the guitar solo also very much reminds me of Slash playing his guitar solo in November Rain.
The reason for the piano on stage is because X-Japan's main song writer, drummer and pianist Yoshiki. He, like in the 2013 performance, has a Kawai piano (accidentally almost the same word as Kawii).
Everyone assumed in 2013, they probably didn't play the paino, BUT Yui had played piano outside of Babymetal as a child (well, even younger child). Because it's a Su-metal solo and because it was the time of Babybones.
Yoshiko Miyazaki, famous actress in Japan, who is in her 60s is a Babymetal fan and this is one of her favorites too.
She had a funny story, Babymetal was at a TV program and thus she had a chance to meet Babymetal as she was in a studio nearby. This was in 2014, so the girls were still kids and she is more than 40 years older, but she was fangirling and nervous to meet them. 🙂

I read that they didn't include this song on their first album because Su wasn't comfortable performing it live yet. Or more like she wasn't confident that she was portraying it how she felt it needed to be portrayed. I think it's safe to say that she managed to tap into the emotion of the song brilliantly after a few more years of life experience. That Legend S performance is up there with Akatsuki Unfinished as one of her most emotionally charged performances.

Nice reactions. in The first one Su frees Yui and Moa from the Black Babymetal spell they were under as the lore goes. Returning to the kawaii angels they flutter over to the piano and take a famous pose of cherubs in a painting. I forget the artist. This is the song that mostly Babymetal threw out the genre blending and went for a straightforward Rock ballad. Very 80s. But also, this is the song that showed the ladies of Babymetal weren't just being told what song to do and they made choices of their own. Su held this song off their first album as she felt she wasn't ready to record it yet. Remember Su was still young herself when that first album came out. That's a lot of power for a kid. But Su is the QUEEN. Outside of that it's still a great song and we're very glad Su put it on the second album. The performance from Legend S is for her 20th birthday and the whole show was a better production. IMO still holds up as the definitive performance of the song. Su just kills it in every way. RIP Mikikio the guitarists died shortly after this performance. Brings an extra hit of emotions for the song. The foxhole is deep and full of surprises.
