X-Kid Z yeah man I bought the comic the book the other day and I’m slowly reading it. The art work is amazing. Has he put out anything since then? Anything major?
@@Bornloserstrongheart Hmm...he did a few things. Most notably a run on Superman, All-Star Batman and Robin which was him drawing Frank Miller's story, and Superman Unchained. Plus he's done a few issues here and there. He hasn't done anything as regular as Hush and his Superman run right after. He's become the boss at DC since then. He does some comic work now and then. He worked on pages of Action Comics 1000 live on Twitch. If you're new to Jim, check out his stuff from the 90's that made him a household name. Uncanny X-Men and X-Men, his creator owned title Wild.C.A.T.s, Deathblow, Gen13, and Divine Right.
Just try to draw something "realistic" from imagination while really focusing on the 3 dimensionality of whatever you are drawing. Ignore drawing it in a way that looks good because of how you stylized it like someone else. Instead just drawn something that feels right and anatomically sound, whatever you ended up with should be your basis for developing a style. This way you don't force yourself to copy a style you like, and the result will instead be a combination of all the art you subconsciously internalized over the years.
@Daniel Johnson Those are quite boring answers. Instead of saying boring things a big artist could tell a story on how he relates to that. Jim Lee starts out good by saying "I used to have a style similar to other artists..." but he doesn't dive deep into how he changed, what were his life experiences working at comics that changed his work, especially the obstacles, the pitfalls, how he gained confidence in his style etc.. Anyone can give a boring answer. It takes a smart guy to answer in a fulfilling way.
Good to hear from you, Michael. Things are great but slow due to Coronavirus. Hopefully things get back to normal really soon under new leadership. Glad to hear that you're continuing to kick butt drawing. Keep it up, buddy.
Good advice. But Jim could also mention that his development was aided immensely by Carl Potts becoming his editor and kinda tutoring him on being a more dynamic comics artist. So draw like yourself, but listen to Carl Potts, too...
1. Active focus (think, as if you are trying to use telepathy) while drawing helps train your brain to visualize the drawing on the white paper. Kind of like training yourself to see three or four moves ahead in a game of chess. Much like chess, or any activity that takes a good amount of cognitive energy, focused drawing requires you to stop, and think about all the variations of choices you have to go. 2. Train your instincts. Gestural drawing helps you to develop what’s called “muscle memory.” I would HIGHLY suggest you pick up the volume series, ‘Drawn to Life’ by Walt Stanchfield if you want to learn the do’s and don’ts of gestural drawing. Good luck to us all in our artistic journeys!
My grandad used to sit down beside me and draw faces and then he’d show me perspective. Then a few years went by, he died, and it wasn’t until I left secondary school as we call it in Ireland aka high school, in 2009, that I had some spare time and started to draw, I used my grandads old books for things to draw and I would get really excited about my drawings, even though looking back at them now they were nothing special, but I kept doing it. And to be honest , yeah that’s 11 years behind me now, but I haven’t been doing it non stop since then so as a result I am pretty good now, but I could be way better if i focused on it all these years. But still I have done it on and off for even over 11 years because I always drew as a kid and in high school I did art and I did comics making fun of the teachers and I drew my classmates, I could never concentrate on all the boring subjects...so if you keep doing something, you’ll surprise yourself. These videos are really reving me up to do some new drawings. My favourite times to draw are early in the morning or late at night.
I often feel that using a reference completely tunnel visions me and I try to draw in the same style and it frustrates me when I can’t I figure out the pose. What I usually do is wait a day and just draw it from memory without the reference. It’s so liberating. I figure out the problems and my style comes out more. I do go back to the reference but for little things. I often fix issues I saw on that drawing on mine.
l0n3w01f - Dang, I like this construct! I shall apply it to my own drawings. I usually warm up (like I do for my strength condition training) by drawing the hands, feet, calves, upper and lower limbs how the poses would be. Finally, I draw all three poses (i only do three at a time lol). However, I like your idea there!
I really vibe on what your saying. We seem to kind of think alike a little bit. I CAN improve just by looking and pondering too I've found . Very cool video man!

I often hear that question on how one becomes good at drawing. Its just like anything else in my opinion. If you something then you gotta put in the time. Just draw
Put away your preferred reference”. But if I don’t follow my preferred style and draw a realism reference it’s just gonna be a realism drawing, but I want to have a more unique style like Jim.
Learn the fundamentals first then worry about style next. If I could go back in time I would have paid attention during figure drawing class when I was at LaGuardia
I think the point was to draw without the training wheels. Many beginners tend to rely heavily on references from other artists. That can be great if your goal is to draw like that artist but in order to develop your own style you must get out there and draw on your own.
when someone says they want to get "swole" you dont tell them to just "workout." there are to many variables involved. If you asked Arnold Schwarzenegger he wouldn't say " just workout" that's just such a lazy answer. He would recommend what type of food to eat, advice on proper rest for growth, and specific exercises with proper form to get one started. i dare you to just "workout" and see how close you'd get to Arnold....

Yeah. Draw is the thing that improves you. It's annoying when people say to just use reference. That doesn't help me AT ALL! Idiots.
Don't drop shrooms. It'll make you a better artist, but DON'T do it. Very, very risky.
