      I would have to agree there. My wrestling background is pretty modest but I see that setting up something like a lat drop.

      agreed. I was expecting this as soon as he called it osato gari rather than o soto gari

      you don't really need to know any judo to know it's easy to take a guy down when he's leaning back on one foot. could pretty much just run him over

  • @HoBoMoBob
    @HoBoMoBob 10 лет назад +14

    Wait is this serious? Ive done judo for 3 years and you definitely DO NOT lean back before you go through with this throw. It puts you off balance and will more than likely get you planted firmly on your back.
    Instead the focus should be using your opponent's weight and missteps against him/her, not using pure strength to sweep a leg out. This video will cause more harm than good if individuals with little judo experience attempt to follow its instructions.

    • @scottwpilgrim
      @scottwpilgrim 4 года назад +1

      Yep. Power in leg sweep comes from base, and momentum doesn't come into play until your opponent is all fours off. This is how you get countered and break your neck.

  • @cheeseplease2832
    @cheeseplease2832 3 года назад +1

    At 2:44 which I guess is Osoto Gari, you're supposed to put your left leg behind his legs not in front of them in a way when you sweep his leg with your right one, you won't lose balance and you'll be able to pull him down. If it doesn't work because you weren't too quick, you go with an Ippon sunagea and your opponent will be on the ground without you losing any balance . I don't know but that's how we do it in Judo and that's how I was taught doing it. It works with any opponent even if they're way heavier than you. It works with me.

    If you lean back while doing an o-sot.gari, the opponent can sweep you left leg and get you on the mat. LEARN judo moves before you teach them

      Mikko Kanerva Also, there are other good judo throws that can be used in mma, Tomoe nage, o koshi, ippon seoi nage, ura nage, tawara gaeshi, o soto guruma, kata guruma etc.

    Absolutely no kuzushi. Head should be FORWARD. And NEVER lean back on your heels. EVER. If you lean back while doing that throw (Osoto gari) on someone with any experience you're going to end up on your back counting the stars flying around your head.

    The second throw a drop ippon seoi nage it works really well if when you drop you have live toes and thrust your hips upward while dragging his/her upper body down its all in all a great throw to learn!!

  • @darrenhandmartialarts5304

    The throw you showed is O So to Gake, (Major Outer Hook as opposed to Major Outer Reap m O Soto Gari) but being honest it is a poor percentage throw injury wise. Stepping the grounded foot past the lead leg is essential.
    Your counter throw (your adaptation of the originsl throw) was Seoi Otoshi...good response.
    Just the perspective of a Traditional Ju Jutsu guy.
    Nice video...maybe I might reply some time with my own.
    Best regards.

  • @iforippon
    @iforippon 10 лет назад +1

    Yes, I've always found the vital first step in throwing someone backwards is to break my own balance to the rear.
    In case people missed the sarcasm, if I wanted to teach someone exactly the wrong way to do osoto-gari, I'd show them this video.
    Why are people "liking" this crock of shit?

    on the variation throw, why wouldn't you go to a north south position? it looks like it would be easier, and a shorter transition as opposed to throwing both legs over and attempting side control

  • @BenM
    @BenM 6 лет назад

    Osoto Gari only works well if your opponent is your body weight or under, if he is 30 or 40lbs heavier than you, the act of unbalancing him will unbalance you. It will only work for the smaller guy if he catches his opponent in the moment. But it will never work if it is forced, given same skill level but weight disadvantage.

  • @wenyileong7005
    @wenyileong7005 6 лет назад

    wow, first thing, you dont need the "momentum" as the "power" is not the thing that makes the throw work , you want the opponents weight shifting his right leg.
    secondly, if you ever feel like leaning( perhaps for the thrills of it) leaning forward would be better than leaning backwards, leaning forward at least holds the possibility of off balancing opponent to his right.

  • @xvegeta13

    I hate when people aren't certified to teach these techniques and get on RUclips and do it anyway spreading bad technique and probably getting people injured

  • @SuperDJDirty
    @SuperDJDirty 10 лет назад

    Pretty good Except you do not want to lean back because then your off balance and that leaves you open instead take a step forward with your right that and apply some pressure with your shoulder this will cause your oppenent to be off balance then slice the calf with your left foot

  • @SuperMichelleDJ
    @SuperMichelleDJ 4 года назад

    I think Osoto Gari is dangerous you should do this throw as last resort, like all other techniques don't work but you'd rather not kill anyone, if you can help it.

    So with that first throw, if his right leg was already forward could you go straight for the sweep or do you need to pull him forward to effect his balance?

  • @rut119
    @rut119 10 лет назад

    If you want to throw someone you have to keep your balance not lean back when you do osoto gari and if your opponant still has balance then you don't have a chance to throw or take him down.Trick him by pulling him forward and then quickly chang to backward, put his weight on the right leg and osoto gari.

    I think it's safe to say you shouldn't try to do videos on judo. This and the 'advance judo' video you did were littered with bad techniques/advice and misinformation. If the way you do it works for you then it's likely to be because your opponent doesn't know what they're doing...

    Let me tell u as someone who trains judo and has trained with Olympic and other world champion Judoka THIS IS ABSOLUTELY WRONG. If u did this type of o-soto-gari u would get thrown immediately by everyone in my judo club white belts included. Five minutes of research would have kept you from making such a obvious error. Simply put your technique here shows you don't know the first thing about Judo.

    • @BloodofPatriots
      @BloodofPatriots 9 лет назад

      +Josh Wilkerson I never throw O-Soto unless I notice my opponent has ALL of his weight on the front leg because I've pulled him off balance at the beginning. If the opponent even has his back foot on the ground, the easy counter is to just lift up the front foot so the hook misses and then the opponent just falls on you. If you fall flat on your back most regional judges will score it an Ippon.

  • @maofas
    @maofas 10 лет назад

    The disclaimer at the beginning of the video should read: if your opponent slams you with his own osoto while you attempt the throw as shown here, it's on you because you're learning Judo from a video instead of seeking a qualified Judo coach in your area.

  • @normansmith3433

    I don't normally comment on RUclips vids, but this is one of the worst O-Soto Gari attempts I've ever seen. Lean back like that (especially without breaking your opponents balance) and you'll be thrown yourself EVERY time.
    This is one of the fundamental errors we see made by BEGINNERS at our club and it's the first point we look to correct.
    While it's great that Judo is finally gaining some recognition in MMA, it helps if you learn things before you teach them. Visit a Judo club maybe?

    If you want to learn judo, learn from someone who practices it, and who competes or has competed in the sport or you're going to get smashed. Go to an IJF or USJF recognized dojo. Judo is effective because of the intensity of the training, and the fact that you're training for competition. It HAS to work. It's ok to watch videos and read books, but you have to practice it daily for it to become second nature.

  • @Rob-qt6ph

    Key indicator that this isn't going to be taught correctly: Mispronouncing the throw. The letter 'O' is pronounced as "Oh" in Japanese. O soto gari... not o-sato-gari.
    The second you lean back to step through like that any person with any real training is going to rotate his/her hips and put you on your back in one of a few ways. Judo can be an extremely useful tool to an MMA fighter, but you should learn the right way to teach it before posting videos. You do a lot of interesting stuff and one flawed bit of instruction can bring the rest into question.
