Okay buckle up because you're about to see the longest comment I've ever written, but I really wish people told me this stuff when I was younger and I want you to at least have a starting point Some stuff you should know about growing up that terrified me: - Adults have no idea what they're doing either, even if they seem put together, we're all just learning how to mess up less -The transition to getting older isn't instantaneous, and you are in control. That seems obvious, logically, but a lot of the anxiety I had about growing up was that I wasn't ready for it. You're growing at your own pace, and don't let anyone trick you into thinking that you have to be in a specific place - Honestly there wasn't really a big change in my maturity. Your brain is physically still changing and developing, (actually until you're around 25) and as you get older you slowly build up life skills and how to cope with bad situations. So don't worry too much about getting everything done now, just try to learn and grow whenever you can and want to - Not the best thing to say to someone in school, but grades actually don't matter that much after highschool. My college was giving a scholarship grant to anyone with a GPA over 2.0. Perfect grades can be a nice touch and get you respect academically, but they're not worth your sanity. Try your best in school, and "best" does not mean worked to the bone, it means doing as good of a job as you can while maintaining your own wellbeing - Another really terrifying thing is all the "grown up" stuff, and unfortunately our schools don't set us up so well for that. But really if you have a normal job and don't own property or a business, it isn't actually that hard, especially if you know the easier ways already. Keep your pay stubs, understand the two forms you'll need for taxes, use TurboTax or something else free and try to do a dry run of your taxes. Pretty much it's just filling out your information and putting in a picture of the forms, and checking if it's correct. The first time I filed taxes, after setting up the app, it took me maybe 20-30 minutes and that's just because I kept putting my social in wrong. If you're young you're probably not making enough to need to file taxes, so doing it anyways can give you a bit of practice, understand how it works without the pressure. -Get your personal information from your parents; social security number, what health insurance you have and who's paying for it. Also if you're receiving any money from the government, inheritance, etc. This really isn't something you need to worry about until you're older but it's good to know because a lot of parents just don't think of explaining it. - Jury duty: Honestly hasn't come up for me yet, it's a small chance that you'll ever actually get put on a case, let alone within a few years. You shouldn't worry about it. - Housing: Really if you have daily normal parents you'll be able to live at home until you're ready to move out. - Don't spent all of your money, if you can, get a bank account set up (or one on your behalf), and put a portion of each paycheck into a separate savings account. This doesn't matter much now but there will eventually be times where those savings are a godsend. - This is less specific but be critical of situations you face, not being an ass, but questioning if something is right for you. Authority figures' recommendations can seem automatically correct, they're not, and you have full control over your own actions. - You cannot control other people. Yes, it's obvious, but really, deep down, on some level we wish we could control others. Not necessarily in a bad way, I'm talking trying to change what someone does, trying to "fix" people. You can't fix people. And it sucks. You can give your own advice and support, but ultimately they're the one living their life and if they change they have to do it themselves. - And finally, maturity isn't being serious and smart and not making mistakes. Maturity is accepting that you, along with everyone else, will mess up, try again, and learn from it. Do not ever let someone tell you that liking things that are considered "childish" makes you immature. They're an idiot in denial. Please, do not force yourself to be older. You will grow over time, but you don't and shouldn't have to let go of things you love. Put stickers everywhere, put on the clothes that you like, skip around the park like a maniac. It's okay. I'm 19 going on 20, I went into a toy store and got something for myself, I've put on a big flowy dress that feels awesome and then just walk my dog. Maturity isn't sacrificing your inner child, it's building and growing from it, at your pace, how you want to. A lot of adults don't understand that. I hope you're doing okay, and just remember, what's going on now you probably won't remember once it's all over. I cannot, with 100% certainty, tell you will have a perfect life ahead of you, who knows maybe you get banished to mars or something. I can tell you that statistically, it's pretty much near impossible that you won't be happy in the future. You will have moments, you will struggle sometimes, but as someone who went through things that very much felt impossible, here I am now, still breathing, still laughing, still being a person. You're going to be okay, trust me on this one
