Steve L. Wow I agree with you so much! Songs as well as tv shows were 'sooo' late 90's even in 2005. Although from early 2000's "alternative rock" started to share space with these songs. Then after 2005 it was almost fully "alt rock and indie rock" (maybe because the world turned even sadder after 2005..Greenday, Audioslave, My chemical romance, Arctic monkeys etc. were my favourite angsty teen choices)..but don't know when these happy songs along with alternative and indie rock went away completely from mainstream.😣
I didn't got to see her! She was supposed to open for Alanis Morissette in october 2020, the concert was re-scheduled for nov 2021 but then pandemic striked again and Liz cancelled in the meantime for some reason... I eventually got to see Alanis in june 2022 @@Dan-di9jd
lucky gal. put yourself first, never let anyone disrespect you, if you start questioning someone's treatment of you or honesty your gut is always correct and dont keep letting it happen. they dont care, and thats a hard lesson. that most people around in the general public are not worth knowing. there are amazing beautiful people and the childhood friends we have a precious. keep them even if you dont see them, keep ties open with them. dont let drama and gossip poison you and always say something when you hear bigots or ignorance being spread or used to hurt someone. its rewarding to have the balls to interrupt a bully type person and protect the person they are preying on. laws and morals are all just created by people. you ultimately know in your heart the right and wrong thing to think and feel. dont participate in what gives you shame and forgive yourself if you hold on to shame or self hate from something probably done to you when you had no way to protect yourself. even if you had a lovely upbringing its easy to fall into the idea that status and money make a person or that you arent good enough or valuable. treat people with dignity and dont form friendships with people who will take you down a bad path. they are users and they are predators. the people around you should make you feel good about who you are. you should feel empowered aby them and lifted in spirit. dont stay around people who arent happy for your successes bc they undoubtedly are also pleased when you fail. they want you who they feelis competition instead of ally to be miserable like them or to not go places especially if they dont. those who love you are your best support and are happy when you progress and your life flourishes. study, learn, and find interests whether in school or not. it is a good idea to get an education but if thats not possible try to read a lot, novels and classics , biographies about heroic or amazing people good and bad from history, learn about your country and its founding and who has lived in it, learn about other nations too and cultures and religions. im atheist but i still study about religions so I can have an opinion that isnt stupid. dont trust what the government says without proof and the main stream media is more of an entertainment show than actually factual/ read well done magazines and papers, watch reputable stations that back up what they say, always give animals respect and try to always make their lives better if you see a stray dog catch it and take it to the shelter or put up signs, feed an animal that looks hungry, if you hear or know of abuse or neglect do not wait for someone else to call about it. make the call and insist it is checked on. animals are soulful and intuitive, all of them even some insects are intuned with people. they are innocent and need our protection which is too scarce. its okay to debate and disagree. dont insult people personally but speak your mind. it is fun to get into a good debate and if you know your stuff you may change a mind for the better. whatever you think about altered states of consciousness i.e. psychedellics, alcohol, etc dont be turned into a reefer madness nutjob. there are many good things about some drugs and the natural ones can help in healing people physically and mentally and ease pain. learn about trips but i reccommend if you have a healthy constitution in your head and are curious to discover further about your inner sense and how to look at life mushroom and pot both can take you to places that open your eyes in ways that make you grow as a person, as an adult. if not there are other ways to join the earth and be part of it like outdoors, meditation, helping the environment, etc. global warning is happening. they need to emphasize it this way. the planet changes all the time. we arent killing it over night. the issue they refer to when they discuss it is the negative effects that are happening at a rate that is dangerous and too quick. it is clear that people waste and damage things like parasites. recycle, dont use a lot fo trash, conserve water, dont get a gas guzzler vehicle, dispose of paint, oil etc in a proper way and if possible try not to eat meat though i still do at times. the treatment of animals that areour food is torture and for some reason not addressed in the us. another topic to try to educate yourself on. just those good habits would chsnge the air quality, clear the trees and forests and raods of so much trash, save wildlife in the ocean choking on plastic and other debris. respect what we have been given by mother nature. so global warming includes the giant five or six mile garbage patch which is a giagantic pile of trash a few feet dep and miles long and wide floating in the pacific ocean. the trash becomes more thick as u reach the actual pile. it is killing so many creatures and is just disgusting. im sure there are many more around the other water ways on earth. look at the shores of lakes and rivers in cities, polluted, thing like diapers and syringes thrown in the water or in the road. thats why people are usually not worth the time. cultures create social norms and attitudes and if it is poor and less educated or rich land the people dont have the means to learn or do the things they need to. lets face it, there are also the people who dont care about things that matter such as human and animal life, are okay with violence, prejudice, religious wars and even torture, misogyny and all the other atrocities that are filling the world. overpopulation and the treatment of women are vital to overcoming the horrors on the earth. as a woman do not hate men because they are all individuals but recognize that being complicit about anything that ishurting people can be as easy as not speaking up. if you are not in physical danger then speak up. care about things. apathy is ugly and the worst crime. have passion for things in life, want to fight a cause, take action. stay out of the shallow and cruel world of slefies and everyone thinking they are the shit with something everyone needs to hear. talent is not given to everyone equally and there is nothing more draining, boring, and uninspiring than conversations about making money, fancy cars, and status. money is nice and things cost money but greed is so nasty. there is no reason someone has several houses and ten cars or twenty or fifity etc when someone else has nothing. greed and ignorance seem to be evils that spread the worst cancers. so i just went off to a stranger but you are young and have a life to live and i wish i would have know so many things bc i would have done it much differently. youth is life, youth is opportunity and ability. if you want kids, get married, love your husband, have a home and a life to provide your kids, read and sing to them, show them things, let them have imaginations, teach them compassion, good manners, loyalty, humor, respect, and esteem. and dont have too many, two is perfect. dont slave away at a job you hate that has no value but to make your boss rich. its easier said then done and not everyone can do it but if you are like me i need to do something that has purpose or i go crazy. it teaches you patience, maturity just like going to school but working for hours daily it seems wrong. so anyway if you read this all thanks. and have a great day lots of misspellings but i dont proofread and i just type fast without stopping. i really am able to spell.
Reminds me of my teenage years. So many good and bad memories growing up. Thinking of that one girl who drove me crazy. So crazy that I eventually asked her out and we’ve been inseparable since then. Reminding me of the school dances, formals and prom night when this song played, finally, to hearing her sing this... Sad part of this is, I listen to this song, reminds me of her even after our teenage years. We grew up, got engaged, unfortunately she left me too soon. Feels good to remember and cry a bit. For my angel who still keeps on looking out for me, I miss you every day. Thank you for being there for me in spirit. Till we see each other soon. ❤️
YES... This is QUITE the #Relationship Song that seems to Trigger many emotional Memories! Thank You LIZ for such #Inspiring Work, you're MAGICAL and #GR8 that you're Currently #Touring Again, too!!!!
I know *exactly* what you mean, bud. It's been 7 years for me now. I'm better than I was, but not sure if I will ever be whole. I hope you're doing good.
I always thought this was Avril. “Isn’t the best part of breakin up, finding someone else you can’t get enough of?” That line always resonated with me.... Thanks Liz Phair. Nice to meet you.
And by listening to this song, all of a sudden my mind went back to 2006 - 2007. The era of me using Myspace and AIM, flip phones. The original iPod shuffle. Playing Counterstrike. Watching Smallville and Supernatural. Middle school years. Whoa, this nostalgia is overwhelming.
It's 2020, I'm on a nostalgic trip while staying home, enjoying the best songs from early 2000s. Btw I'm in the minority who first heard this song from the movie "Win a Date with Tad Hamilton!"
I was 13 unfortunately it's a great song but it came out when we were evicted from our home.Li "Nostalging" about it makes me feel like a glutton for punishment.
I watched Todd in the Shadows' series Trainwrecords on Liz Phair's Funstyle and he talked about this song and album at length. I remember when "Why Can't I?" came out and thought that is was fun and breezy pop rock song; so I was genuinely shocked to find out how much the media hated this song. The amount of vitriol Liz received from the critics was unlike anything I had ever seen.
It’s mainly because her debut album Exile in Guyville was praised among every critic. It was a more mature and darker album than the one that this song comes from “Liz Phair”. Critics become so hateful towards this work for the main reason she decided to go for a mainstream audience instead of the underground indie scene she came from. It was basically they telling her that she sold out which it’s kinda unfair imo
Honestly, I wasn't even aware of any of the vitriol going on with Liz Phair before seeing that Todd In The Shadows episode, and frankly, I think a lot of the shit she got for the self title album honestly fucked her over creatively even up to Funstyle and beyond. Like seriously, all those "critics" basically demonizing her for trying to do something more "mainstream" (aka, something outside of their precious Indie Rock bubble) honestly need to fuck off, and also fuck them for going back to the self title only after she's all but dropped off the face of the Earth and only NOW admitting it's not all that bad.
Liz Phair rocks...! i love how her lyrics are so suggestive yet her songs sound so sweet you almost dont notice the lyrics unless you pay close attention!
Lol, you know this single was mostly written by the shithead writing team of “The Matrix” (ugh), who wrote half the crappy manufactured hit pop songs of the 2000s, right? I’m not quite sure this is actually a different song than Avril Lavigne’s Complicated (also written by The Matrix). This is Liz Phair completely selling out her artistic integrity for money. You could literally swap out any singer into this song and it would’ve made no difference.
Peter P21 she already had an entire album recorded and in the bag when her record label said "no, we want singles, write with these people." Early 2000s was a tough time for female singers - Jewel, Sheryl Crow, Nelly Furtado all had to make shiny pop music and sexy videos too. This song is still Liz to me: the lyrics are about two adults still in a relationship with other people but who are itching to get down and dirty with each other and start something new. Bit more complicated (ironically) and real than Avril, Michelle Branch and the other early 2000s stars.
I had an opportunity to go back stage to meet her when she was performing at Summerfest in Milwaukee back in the early 2000s. Turned it down to not blow off the friends I went with. Have always regretted it :(
I totally forgot about this song until i was watching this movie on Netflix called 13 Going On 30 and it was suddenly played! holy moroni! I loved this song so much. i was in my early 20s then. so nostalgic!!!! i am glad you are still around, liz phair! ❤
Watching 13 going on 30 at this moment. And decided to come listen to this while it's an commercial break on. I know the song but can't recall seeing the video. I miss the early 00's pop and pop rock music an sound. Happy Friday everybody and have a good and safe weekend.💋
2003-2004 was my senior year of high school. I was reminded of this song today while watching "13 Going on 30." Brought back mad memories, almost made me cry. Guess I get emotional when I reminisce (even though I wouldn't want to necessarily be back in high school again.)
Little_Carrot Same here! I feel so nostalgic about school time from 6th grade to the end. Especially 2003 to 2009..although I didn't really like 2003, 2005 or 2006 but I still miss those times. Just won't like to go back to those times..maybe going back to 11th or 12th grade is ok but still.
This was the first Liz Phair song I ever heard probably around age 12. I find it cool that the older I get, the more I discover her old music and fall in love with her in a brand new way.
How I feel/ felt listening to this song throughout the each decade: . 2000's /preteen--- "ah I love this song!" 🤘🏾 . 2010's/ teenager--- "ah the nostalgia!" 😊 . 2020's/ adult--- "damn it! These lyrics hits home so hard!" 😣
This song unlocked a memory for me because I heard Why can’t I on the radio. Forgotten all about it when I started getting older now after watching FBE reacts video brought back memories.
Remember hearing this on Vh1 at around 2-3am when they used to show new music videos while you waited for regularly scheduled programming. I must've been in middle school & it was summer. Good years.
[Verse 1] Get a load of me, get a load of you Walking down the street and I hardly know you It's just like we were meant to be Holding hands with you when we're out at night Got a girlfriend, you say it isn't right And I've got someone waiting too [Pre-Chorus] What if this is just the beginning? We're already wet and we're gonna go swimming [Chorus] Why can't I breathe Whenever I think about you? Why can't I speak Whenever I talk about you? It's inevitable It's a fact that we're gonna get down to it So tell me Why can't I breathe whenever I think about you? Whenever I think about you... [Verse 2] Isn't this the best part of breaking up? Finding someone else you can't get enough of Someone who wants to be with you too It's an itch we know we are gonna scratch Gonna take a while for this egg to hatch But wouldn't it be beautiful Pre-Chorus] Here we go We're at the beginning, we haven't fucked yet But my head's spinning [Chorus] Why can't I breathe Whenever I think about you? Why can't I speak Whenever I talk about you? It's inevitable It's a fact that we're gonna get down to it So tell me Why can't I breathe whenever I think about you? [Bridge] High enough for you to make me wonder Where it's going High enough for you to pull me under Somethin's growing Out of this that we can control Baby, I am dyin' [Chorus] Why can't I breathe Whenever I think about you? Why can't I speak Whenever I talk about you? Why can't I breathe Whenever I think about you? Why can't I speak Whenever I talk about you? It's inevitable It's a fact that we're gonna get down to it So tell me Why can't I breathe whenever I think about you? [Outro] Whenever I think about you Whenever I think about you Whenever I think about you Whenever I think about you
I didnt realize how much i love this song and been a fan since Supernova video came out on Alternative nation or 120 minutes on MTV . Damn i miss those days.
When I was a kid, I had a karaoke machine with this song on it. The lyrics on screen said, "We haven't talked yet," and I remember thinking that was kind of stalkerish but sang it a hundred times anyway. Listening to this now at 31, I just got major whiplash at hearing the ACTUAL lyrics for the first time.
The song was just so beautifully placed in 13 going on 30! Brings back so much memories from the 00's, this song and the movie will always be etched on my heart. ❤️
Unfortunately, there is a bad side to her. If you listen very carefully and read the lyrics you can see that there's tons of dirty language. Her sexy voice covers all of it up though so most people don't know.
This and “everywhere” by Michelle Branch are the themes of early 2000’s rom-coms lol 😂

KimChigglet no way dude this song is awesome. Okay maybe it's just she looks so good. Didn't strokes for different folks.
If you’re listening to this in 2023, you are absolutely amazing.
im listening to it cuz i found it through a cover the band Waterparks did AND I LOVE BOTH VERSIONS
What about 2024🎉😂
2024
I've been obsessed with this song since 2005 and I'm finally seeing Liz in concert. I'm in tears!!!!!
Did she sang this song?

You became a teenager at 13(teen) to 19(teen).

Two decades later "Why Can't I" forget Liz Phair! She was truly a pioneer with timeless music.
This song was on the soundtrack to like 20 different movies.

Yes. Mostly teen movies and rom coms but it was everywhere!

It was in Win A Date With Tad Hamiliton and 13 Going On 30

Lol
I'm currently drunk on New Years Eve with my husband and all I could think about is this song 🤣😴😴
Lma0
I get choked up if I listen to this too much. Such pure and raw emotion and how the music and words just hit home.
I agree do this song in time frame has special meaning for me
I agree.... takes me back to being so young and innocent
@@frankiegarcia2488 that's not innocent. Do you catch it? Metaphorically deadly desperation. But yeah it's. OK. Scratchy
I’m a 52 year old white male, I remember her first album back in the early 90’s and I LOVE this song.
What does it matter if you're white?
White male over 50 stereotypically have no time for music of 00'
Reminds me of my teenage years. ❤️
God, i hope you're doing better man. Your time with her sounded magical.

We need to talk about her versatility as an artist because listening to this after going through her 90s stuff-the contrast is insane. That’s skill.
Lawd the early 2000s take me back 😩❤️
I always thought this was Avril. “Isn’t the best part of breakin up, finding someone else you can’t get enough of?” That line always resonated with me.... Thanks Liz Phair. Nice to meet you.
I miss the early 2000s, my childhood!
mine too....i mean my early thirties childhood! a great time of life.
i feel you man, 100%. the songs you grow up with are so special. especially the ones from the early 2000s... there is a certain ring to it :)
I miss those days.. ;(

LOL Now you know how Gen Xers feel when we talk about the 70's and 80's.
Honestly, Liz made way more fans with this catchy song than she lost by selling out. 😊
MY FAVORITE DRUNK SONG! =)
13 going on 30 brought here a few years....and still continuie bring me here now almost in 2017....time passing no joke...
Holy crap this is like a nostalgia wave. So aggressively 2000’s. Love it 🌸👯♀️
And by listening to this song, all of a sudden my mind went back to 2006 - 2007.
Just watched it hahaha and it brought me here

Happy 53rd Birthday Liz. Apr 17, 1967. And many more. You carved the way for present and future female singers/performers.
Just finished watching 13 going on 30 and had to come listen to the full song. 😭🥲❤️
6 months later, Pitchfork "changes" their 0.0 score to a 6.0! Pretty cool imo.
I love how the songs not too serious, but the chorus makes it sound so intense. Its awesome
13 going on 30. yeah im a dude, i can admit i rock out to this shit.
HAHAHA. That's awesome!
Watch 'How To Deal' starring Mandy Moore . It's the first film to promote this song.
same tho
SenileTomato me to brother me too
This song takes me back, reminds me of a long lost love that just didn't work out. Still miss her...
Liz Phair rocks...! i love how her lyrics are so suggestive yet her songs sound so sweet you almost dont notice the lyrics unless you pay close attention!
Adam Johnson I just realized what this song was talking about, as a kid I had no idea.
"Flower" is *utterly* filthy. And yet so resonant.
"Haven't fucked yet" isn't suggestive.....it's straight to the point. Liz doesn't beat around the bush at all
Lol, you know this single was mostly written by the shithead writing team of “The Matrix” (ugh), who wrote half the crappy manufactured hit pop songs of the 2000s, right?
Have always regretted it :(
Love it from 13 going on 30, miss those films 😊❤️
I totally forgot about this song until i was watching this movie on Netflix called 13 Going On 30 and it was suddenly played! holy moroni! I loved this song so much. i was in my early 20s then. so nostalgic!!!! i am glad you are still around, liz phair! ❤
This made 13 Going on 30 a better movie.
So nostalgic. Pair a movie/series with the song

Watching 13 going on 30 at this moment. And decided to come listen to this while it's an commercial break on. I know the song but can't recall seeing the video. I miss the early 00's pop and pop rock music an sound. Happy Friday everybody and have a good and safe weekend.💋

Happy 50th Birthday Liz Phair
2003-2004 was my senior year of high school. I was reminded of this song today while watching "13 Going on 30." Brought back mad memories, almost made me cry. Guess I get emotional when I reminisce (even though I wouldn't want to necessarily be back in high school again.)
Little_Carrot Same here! I feel so nostalgic about school time from 6th grade to the end. Especially 2003 to 2009..although I didn't really like 2003, 2005 or 2006 but I still miss those times. Just won't like to go back to those times..maybe going back to 11th or 12th grade is ok but still.
Oh my god I heard this in my car and was instantly transported back to 2000. Crazy.
This was the first Liz Phair song I ever heard probably around age 12. I find it cool that the older I get, the more I discover her old music and fall in love with her in a brand new way.
How I feel/ felt listening to this song throughout the each decade:
.
2000's /preteen--- "ah I love this song!" 🤘🏾
.
2010's/ teenager--- "ah the nostalgia!" 😊
.

Good years.
[Verse 1]
Get a load of me, get a load of you
Walking down the street and I hardly know you
It's just like we were meant to be
Holding hands with you when we're out at night
Got a girlfriend, you say it isn't right
And I've got someone waiting too
[Pre-Chorus]
What if this is just the beginning?
We're already wet and we're gonna go swimming
[Chorus]
Why can't I breathe
Whenever I think about you?
Why can't I speak
Whenever I talk about you?
It's inevitable
It's a fact that we're gonna get down to it
So tell me
Why can't I breathe whenever I think about you?
Whenever I think about you...
[Verse 2]
Isn't this the best part of breaking up?
Finding someone else you can't get enough of
Someone who wants to be with you too
It's an itch we know we are gonna scratch
Gonna take a while for this egg to hatch
But wouldn't it be beautiful
Pre-Chorus]
Here we go
We're at the beginning, we haven't fucked yet
But my head's spinning
[Chorus]
Why can't I breathe
Whenever I think about you?
Why can't I speak
Whenever I talk about you?
It's inevitable
It's a fact that we're gonna get down to it
So tell me
Why can't I breathe whenever I think about you?
[Bridge]
High enough for you to make me wonder
Where it's going
High enough for you to pull me under
Somethin's growing
Out of this that we can control
Baby, I am dyin'
[Chorus]
Why can't I breathe
Whenever I think about you?
Why can't I speak
Whenever I talk about you?
Why can't I breathe
Whenever I think about you?
Why can't I speak
Whenever I talk about you?
It's inevitable
It's a fact that we're gonna get down to it
So tell me
Why can't I breathe whenever I think about you?
[Outro]
Whenever I think about you
Whenever I think about you
Whenever I think about you
Whenever I think about you
This brings old memories. Thanks Liz ❤ i hope you read this. You are awesome

The best song of 13 going on 30 I loved
Shocked tiktok never found this song, it’s so good
When I was a kid, I had a karaoke machine with this song on it. The lyrics on screen said, "We haven't talked yet," and I remember thinking that was kind of stalkerish but sang it a hundred times anyway. Listening to this now at 31, I just got major whiplash at hearing the ACTUAL lyrics for the first time.
Young love…. Back then… love now… I go back to this song.
To think I was only 18 when this song came out and now I'm 36. Wow time goes by fast.
I WAS 16 NOW I'M 34..
I was 11! Lol loved it then and to this day.
I was 17 now I’m 35 😮

Everything about this song and video is so early 2000s. It's very nostalgic.

Unfortunately, there is a bad side to her. If you listen very carefully and read the lyrics you can see that there's tons of dirty language. Her sexy voice covers all of it up though so most people don't know.
