As a child we lived close to a rail road line. Old time steam engines had a whistle instead of a horn. Engineers developed their own unique way of blowing the whistle.
They're ex CN GP40-2W (w for widecab). They also came with some other mods for cold/snowy weather operation. The snowshields over the air intake behind the cab are a good example of it.
When I was a kid, we used to have a come down the tracks near a bike path we always rode with our parents. This horn is exactly like the horn of that train as it would fly down the tracks. (waukegan illinios)
Yeah, leave the guy alone. The video was fine. I swear all some people do all day is sit on their computer and make rude comments on every video they watch.
Instead of a "get the hell out of my way" horn that most diesels have these days, this is more like "I'm the most important train in the world. Get out of my way", lol
why do you say that? if you are talking about the way i hold the camera very unsteady, then i'm sorry. standing in 20 degree weather with 15 mph winds gets cold, fast. i didnt bring my tripod either which i hate myself for. but, there is nothing wrong with how this video was recorded.
Sounds like a Leslie S3-K, standard on GN/BN since the fifties. One of my faves, too, but the problem with these is that only two out of the three chimes are sounding. It's a whole lot nicer with the full chord!
i believe the horn is a K3l, its still got the original CN tuning on it so it sounds great. after this day though, ive never heard an equivialent and beter horn than here, even on the same engine. everything just went right this day.
Boy, there are a lot videos labeled "Best Horn Ever" on RUclips. Most of them, like this one have more wind noise than horn. You need a wind shield; a piece foam rubber, or Scotchbrite pad glued over the mic opening... :>))
@theGUYwho1 these engines were sitting on an extra track waiting for the go ahead. because too many people complained about the noise, the engines cant sit attatched to their train which is just up the line. the engines must first come off the waiting track, over the siding that their train sits on, and then onto the main. from there they reverse direction, heading towards their train. eventually they will go over another switch, reverse, and be back on their train.
I have no idea what si group even is. waite rd is on rt. 146A, if you follow it from the fire department in Ballston lake, going towards clifton park, waite rd. is before the golf course.

@Rakunk76 Thanks! This is one of my first vids to please excuse the lack of tripod and shakyness lol. This loco is actually a former Canadian national unit, hense the awesome horn :)
It's actually a fifth interval between the two notes, not a chord. A chord needs three or more notes. I checked it out on my keyboard synthesizer--the notes are E above middle C, and A--although they are a quarter tone off. It could just as easily be E flat and B flat--it's right in between the cracks. The horns need to be tuned up!
R.I.P. Pan Am. You Will Never Be Forgotten. By Us Railfans.
RS5T's are the best horns ever. That's why they're also called the "Kings of All Train Horns."
It sounds like a royal fanfare for when the king enters the room.
This horn sounds like the trumpets of 1,000 angels, echoing down from the heavens.
Beautiful sound! One day listening out my window on a cold snowy day and out in the distance was that wonderful cry.
Every time I hear that horn , that beautiful horn , I feel happy again.
thats a really nice horn , really soothing to me
As a child we lived close to a rail road line. Old time steam engines had a whistle instead of a horn. Engineers developed their own unique way of blowing the whistle.
Cass Scenic Railroad and Rich Melvin (retired excursion engineer of 765) really know how to play the whistle.
Awesome sound ! 👍🏻
It has a rather musical sound to it. I like it!

Does your dad work at the Guilford real system
Dam you are smart
The lead locomotive shown (MEC 504) is Ex- CN GP40-2LW 9466 with what I believe is a K3L.
Yep k3l alright, this sound is common round my area at 7 and 10 am a lot
I don't know man if I heard this horn at night I'd run for my life it's almost supernatural.
Beautiful sound. Wish I had that as a ringtone.
this sounds like a dying robotic horse.
The one at 1:10 ish.
For the sake of god, it's just a simple 5th
Sounds like trumpets 🎺! Very nice
When I was a kid, we used to have a come down the tracks near a bike path we always rode with our parents. This horn is exactly like the horn of that train as it would fly down the tracks. (waukegan illinios)
I can say with absolute certainty that this horn is a Nathan K3L horn.
this is the trumpet sound railfanners will hear when God returns
awesome train horn. love that sound
I'm just reading these old 2008 comments. Where oh where has the time gone
It sounds like a blast from Gabriel's trumpet!
The radio traffic was a nice touch.
The first small horn before he spun around after the gates lowered got me going. I love distant K5LA
Klaxon Signalling Innovations k5l the a is American tuned
Wow! That is so cool! That almost sounds like a completely new type of horn! =D
The most satisfying horn ever
My wife & I both agree with that horn is awesome, GREAT footage & I just subscribed 👍😎
Very interesting. I can't tell what it is but its makin' a joyful noise. God bless!
I want one of those on my car because of the way people drive nowadays
certainly pleasant to hear, most pleasant American diesel horn i've ever heard (thus far)
Yes Indeed, a beautiful sounding horn. Love it !!! ~Cynthia~
Sounds like the entire brass section of the philharmonic orchestra warming up.
Yeah, leave the guy alone. The video was fine. I swear all some people do all day is sit on their computer and make rude comments on every video they watch.
Yeah
Only ever heard that horn on CN, but you mention this was a CN unit, so I'm not surprised.
Horn sounds like a TADAAA IM HERE type of sound.
Beautiful sound 😀
Instead of a "get the hell out of my way" horn that most diesels have these days, this is more like "I'm the most important train in the world. Get out of my way", lol

That horn sound is a new one to me
why do you say that? if you are talking about the way i hold the camera very unsteady, then i'm sorry. standing in 20 degree weather with 15 mph winds gets cold, fast. i didnt bring my tripod either which i hate myself for. but, there is nothing wrong with how this video was recorded.

that's one very sick K3, must be only 1 bell working on that
i believe the horn is a K3l, its still got the original CN tuning on it so it sounds great. after this day though, ive never heard an equivialent and beter horn than here, even on the same engine. everything just went right this day.

so funny how they backed in, then started back the opposite direction. lol
Boy, there are a lot videos labeled "Best Horn Ever" on RUclips. Most of them, like this one have more wind noise than horn. You need a wind shield; a piece foam rubber, or Scotchbrite pad glued over the mic opening... :>))
cool horn but man the prime movers sound great!
OOOH yeah! The overtones! And maybe the air? The snow?

The Amtrak K5LA is my favorite put this horn is not to shabby.
thanks! this is my all time favorite!
Mine too
sounds.... majestic.
dang! that video is spectacular!!!! thats probably the best horn Ive ever heard! great capture!
@boberttrain831 That's a K-3H horn, with the 2 bell fouled and silent.
My faorite type of horn is some veriant of the Burlington Northern K3LA.
The road you see is Waite Rd. It is just before the gold course coming from ballston lake past the fire department.
they do sound very similar, and lol like i said i know more about steam whistles than i do horns.
Got a nice shot of 514 at Ayer once next to the tower.
I like the bell, the bell sounds just like R&N 3058!!!
THAT IS BEAUTIFUL!
I personally like the horns on the C40-8W's the best, but this is one BEAUTIFUL horn.
I have no idea what si group even is. waite rd is on rt. 146A, if you follow it from the fire department in Ballston lake, going towards clifton park, waite rd. is before the golf course.
My favourite will always be an RS3L with the Nathan K5LLA closely following
WOW! Awesome horn and vid!
Great harmony.
wow! wasnt expecting that! NICE!!
@Nec1228 love that Canadian tuned Nathan K3L
what an awesome horn
Dang that sounds haunting!
Sweet sounding horn
At least the crossing gates ain't froze!
Haha, don't worry about it! The only reason I know is because I've gotten to see this engine up close and personal before.

@@nvaa1991 I watched that 0-0
sounds like a couple of trumpets or something playing in an orchestra. lol
I agree, sounds like a symphony.
BRO that k5la in the distance is fucking amazing... any idea if that horn is from an Amtrak, CSX, or NS?
Sounds a bit creepy at first but it gets better
U need a tripod and a new camara
Look at the date.
>2008
NS 1071 Productions come back when you see the date
For some reason i thought it would be a taco truck music
Cool horn!
I hear that horn everyday
That looks like Waite Road in Clifton Park!
504's K3L has since been fixed but 514 still sounds like that. (The cause is the complete foul of the #F Sharp Bell. (Middle Trumpet Of Horn)
I can be very wrong but that sounds like a Leslie or a Nathan’s
Well, they sure took off in a hurry.
@Rakunk76 Thanks! This is one of my first vids to please excuse the lack of tripod and shakyness lol. This loco is actually a former Canadian national unit, hense the awesome horn :)
I want to say it's a slightly fouled K3L horn, but I don't know for sure.
Sounds alot like the horns on the Indian Railways ALCO horns for some reason, guess cause its essentially a 2 chime for what other people have said.
it sounds alot like an old leslie single chime to me haha
Awsome sound

That's a good horn! Most railroads change them for freaking leslie crap... Leslies just make boring noise instead of a melody...
