In 480 B.C. a state of war exists between Persia, led by King Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro), and Greece. At the Battle of Thermopylae, Leonidas (Gerard Butler), king of the Greek city state of Sparta, leads his badly outnumbered warriors against the massive Persian army. The King did warn him that in Sparta everyone is held accountable for their words, even a messenger....... THIS IS SPARTA!!!
It's weird how you stumbled on the comment at the exact moment it was being said on the video
He pretty much told the messenger to tread lightly and he didn't listen.
@@glanced9684 THIS! IS! PERECT TIMING!
I wasn’t aware of this scene. Previously I thought he was a c*unt for breaking international law of that era. But he did warn him.
Oke
Did you know, this line was said many times in filming and the director eventually landed on one. But Gerard Butler, Leonidas, said, let me try it again. And this is the one that closed the deal. What an actor.
Iirc, the casts were ready to pack up and get ready for the next scene, then my man suddenly said he wants another shot, and then we got this legend
In the comic he didn’t even yell the line. Similar to the infamous Harry Potter quote “Harry, did you put your name in the goblet of fire” dumbledore asked calmly.
@@kuleyklips5324 In the comics it works to say it softly. For Cinema, this definitely worked better.
Heh, sometimes ya gotta just trust your gut!

I had a kitten called Sparta just so I could say to people " this is Sparta" she is now a cat of 12 years old and a spartan in spirit
That is awesome. You'll make the day of anyone who has seen that movie.
Yeah.. be ''her slave then" and don't complain after! If you know what i mean!
Good choice, I may name my next cat or dog that name.
You should get another can and name it "Madness"
So that is awesome!!!!!
The smirk of the Queen when she says that only Spartan women gave birth to real men is gold.
I think that's why she was cast in Game of Thrones. I get Cersei vibes in this scene

3:50 "This Is Sparta!!!" That iconic and badass line will never get old ⚔️🔥
"The Powerrrr of one, the powerrrrr of two, the powerrrrr of maaaaaaanyyyyy".? Yeah I see what you mean.
And it was even the last take. After several takes of saying it softly, as the director originally intended, Gerard Butler asked for one more take. The rest is history.
Indeed... I still get a hard on everytime I watch it!! :D Epic scene!!
My wife is Greek and she often shouts this at me when she wants me to wash up.

It's so weird to point out, but the make-up for this movie was amazing. You can see the shading of detail the bridges of their nose like a comic book. Which makes since, this is a comic book movie.

As soon as he insulted the queen is when Leonidas walked them to that hole. His fate was sealed from that point.
Yup, the decision had already been made. The glance back at his queen was just to make sure that she would stand beside him when he did what he knew he had to do.
But what was that hole for? I mean its a sizable health & safety hazard haha!! 😂
@@lordswift Only for Persians.
@@lordswift That hole is probably there to weed out the stupid and the clumsy among the Spartans?
@@xornxenophon3652or the physically and mentally infirm. Spartans were known for exposing disabled children
At 0:49 Leonidas looked like he was about to say to his Queen “we should not insult our guest” but then that same guest insulted Sparta’s Queen in that brief moment and he immediately changed to defiance towards this guest of Sparta. It was that moment he decided to walk him to the pit and wonder should I kill him? Once coerced to submit to Persia, it made it even easier. The Queen gave the final nod, but there was no question that would happen.
Even before that, the moment he bring the skulls of conquered kings he knew that he would kill him
But didn't the messenger have a point. In ancient times women were not allowed to speak in such situations
@@anupgeorge1888 regardless, the messenger is a guest. A guest shouldn’t discipline a country’s people despite them perceiving their treatment as an insult. The messenger should have let Leonidas to step in to handle this situation, but instead insulted his people and worst of all his queen. It only further leaves him to be defiant towards the Persians, which he would’ve been anyway, but now he has even more reason to defy.
@@flusteredtaco8073 Great answer. Thanks
I dont always like to stand at the edge of creepy bottomless pits, but when I do I like to make sure its at the same time I just threatened the king of a known war loving nation
😂 brilliant
And his queen.
Whom I just insulted.
During filming this line was supposed to be whispered… Gerard Butler improv’s the best line in the movie!!!
Sure, and the camera placement just happened to get right on the front of his face
@@Toybinger if ur being sarcastic just look up the interview w Gerard Butler lol he said it😂👍🏻
@@josh1180 Yup, they'd settled on the take they wanted, and were ready to pack up and move on to the next scene, but Gerard asked for one more take. This was that take.
TBH I would like to see the other takes. As much as I love this particular take I think it is actually more meaningful and menacing to whisper it. Think about it. The messenger tells him he’s mad for threatening him. Leonidas looks around, looks at the Queen, looks back, leans in and quietly whispers, “This is Sparta.” Then front kicks him into the pit. That’s badass because the emotion is hidden until the last possible second and before he realizes what is happening he’s falling backwards. His mind would not really have time to register the moment. No way to stop it. He just falls.
@@SPARTANSIX-1 Eh, given that they'd already had swords drawn on them and backed up to the pit, I don't know how much surprise would really matter. Though even if they hadn't pulled swords on them, it wouldn't make sense, since he wouldn't have a reason to say that "this is madness!".
Someday, I would like to go to Greece and visit Sparta, at least where it was. And scream, this is Sparta!
Few months ago, during my road trip around Pelopennese peninsula, i stopped by Sparta, visited ancient city and finally did this in front of Leonidas' statue! That was really so satisfying and i dont know why. Wish you good luck and hope you can do the same one day! : ) Ah and if you do it dont forget to let us know!

Persian Empire: *Lets give Sparta-a very strict Greek monarchist society filled with legendary warriors that are portrayed as “defenders of democracy” in an inaccurate Hollywood movie, an ultimatum-what could possibly go wrong?*
Gladiator & this🎥 movie🍿 are one of my all time favourites.
2 things probably no one noticed
1) The Messenger bends down in front of leonidas for no reason before he kicks him
2) The Messengers mouth is closed when he is being kicked and is falling inside the well but the screaming noise come in the background
I like the Stormwind background sounds.
2:15 was when he began to contemplate punishing the persian messenger, weighing the possible consequences and coming to a final decision.
Notice how he stared at his subjects? What their fate would become vs the reputation of Sparta were at odds.
If they were to stop in Kentucky we would say " this here's Sparta! "

One of the best movies of this decade
The queen left Sparta after the Kings death and married Robert Baratheon and became queen again and lived happily ever after in the Red Keep.
Dude got insulted (then promptly condemned to death) by Cersei Lannister herself
"come now, let's just walk over here by that bottomless pit...a little to the left...perfect"

Can you be specific how it is inaccurate, just to know
@@lightyagumiwell there’s the obvious, Xerxes wasn’t a giant with mad piercings, the Persian army didn’t have monsters or whatever in their armies, the traitors probably wasn’t a hunchback.
