  • Finally managed to get around to doing this video! This week we're talking about Bach Chorales, and learning from them as Improvisers/Composers. While I'm not a Classical guitarist, I love to take the ideas from the idiom and move them over to Jazz (or a more improvised context). The chorales are truly a clinic in understaning Harmony/Voice-leading so do take the time to go through them, even if it is just one or two voices at a time.
If you would like to follow along, here's a link to IMSLP where you can find a copy (it's labelled as Complete Score). I'm using Chorale 147 as the demo piece. - imslp.org/wiki/389_Choralges%...)
    0:00 - Bach Chorale 147 Demo
    1:19 - Intro

    4:08 - Taking 2 Voices at a time
    5:00 - Applications for Guitar
    7:00 - Voice-leading similarities over Rhythm Changes
    7:50 - Absorbing Harmonic Language
12:20 - Breakdown of Chorale Ending
16:10 - How To Apply To Your Own Playing?
18:05 - Improvising Using Some Bach Vocabulary
    19:40 - Closing

Hey I wrote a fairly lengthy comment this morning but it seems to have disappeared?!?! Anyhow I'm back into Bach 😁 I'm revisiting the Chorales and am starting a little project with them. I can tell you this, each chorale contains little gems. They're so lovely.
I've also been working with Mick Goodrick's Almanacs which are great voice leading books. In particular I love the part about three part fourths ( basically sus2 chords but they can obviously have different applications thus different names).
    Great video Juan 👍

Hi Marc! It's actually not the first time I've heard of lengthy comments disappearing, and I'm fairly certain that it's something on RUclips's end. The chorales are beautiful, I have to revisit them myself! The same goes for Goodrick's almanacs. They're treasure troves of information. Thanks for the comment and glad you enjoyed the video!

I find myself returning to Bach's music after spending a lot of time absorbing the Barry Harris approach to voice leading and harmony. Those 2nds crop up when you borrow notes in Barry's system. Bach was truly a cat. He was borrowing all over his music.

Back in my school days, we had to sing one voice while playing the other 3 for every voice, using falsetto or/and transposition, when necessary. Always from open score. Great ear training exercise.
Brahms was correct “study Bach. There you will find everything “

Thanks so much for the video. This could become a playlist in fact.
Now would you consider explaining how Bach handles close and distant modulations? I’ve never understood how he gets those outside chord changes. (Outside in the classical sense of course…)

So I’ve contemplated this video for sometime since it has been posted. And one thing hit me like a freight train and that is simply that most of us as Guitarist simply do not understand the basic rudiments of four-part harmony. I noticed that when I play a few chords (based on a standard tune) I “feel” like I’m playing the harmony by going through the changes but I’m not truly playing harmony in a polyphonic sense. I wish I could get over this lack of understanding….

    • @JuanDhas
      @JuanDhas  2 года назад +1

Totally understand, and it's something I still struggle with. I think it's equal parts exposition to those sounds, and a strong fundamental understanding of chords, harmony, function and voice-leading.

@@JuanDhas Yeah when I stopped to look at harmony from the soprano, alto, tenor, and bass perspective vs chord scale theory something clicked. An outer voice melodic phrase in one chord can become an inner voice melody in the next depending on where the melody goes of course. Thanks again!
