In this video, I explain why I recommend pet insurance, I break down how it works, terms you need to know, the best pet insurance companies, which policy we ultimately chose, and lots more! Most importantly, I share what to look for in a policy to help you save money in the long run. To make the pet insurance affordable, I suggest 5k annual coverages. the unlimited coverages are for the show dogs where owners invests lots of money to maintain their dogs. The copays and deductibles are according to your budget. As a human, we rarely surpass 5k in annual medical bills and I believe 5k coverages are sufficient amounts. It is important to not over insure.

Trupanion can actually directly pay the vet within minutes of the claim being submitted by the hospital... this means you don't have to pay upfront and wait to get reimbursed... you would just pay the co-pay amount at check out!!!! Huge game changer.

I feel like this video should be recommended to all pet owners. We really did not think pet insurance would be beneficial for our 5-month-old puppy, but we decided to get healthy paws when he was around 13 weeks old. Just last week he had to go in for an MRI (Everything turned out just fine! It was precautionary for some weird behavior) But that was 3000 dollars for everything. We will be getting reimbursed and I could not be happier that we have that peace of mind.

I think a lot of emphasis needs to be placed also on Care Credit along with pet insurance. Without it, you may have to make a life and death decision based on finances because you don’t have the money upfront to cover the bill.

This is a good idea but you can specify any credit card to be used for your pet in case he or she needs it. You know you’re getting reimbursed from insurance so as long as you don’t use the card for other reasons you will be fine.

Ditto. I wanted insurance last year but accidentally signed up for Banfield optimum wellness. Its probably good for young dogs but I have a 14 yr old who may need more than they seem capable of. I had to return 3 times bc they couldn't trim his nails or examine him. I told them in advance that he is a hypochondriac, but he has never bitten or tried to hurt anyone or any animal. But they insisted he "freaked out" and they couldn't control him in the few minutes he was allowed. I couldn't help bc of COVID prevention protocol, even though some of their staff (interacting w everyone) had masks below their nose negating any attempt to appear concerned. Now I'm here and am learning more than a year of what Banfield staff had taught me in their multiple mini sessions. They seem to be willing to make calls telling me its time to renew. They are good at v brief phone calls, but not dealing w dogs who are awake.

I'm paying $42 a month for $8,000 of coverage with the 500 deductible on a 1-year-old dog now. This is with Embrace also. I imagine a cat would have similar rates. Both plans are opted not to have well pet insurance cuz that's a lot more per month but when you need catastrophic insurance this company treated me so well before, during, and after my claim.

    Our dog was insured from
When he was only 6 months old. Our vet advised it because the dog liked to eat weird things. He later was diagnosed with diabetes. His medication was $450 per month - covered at 90%. Then he got cataracts from his diabetes. $7,500 surgery to restore his sight reimbursed at 90%. Then he needed his gall bladder out and was in intensive care hospital at $1,100 per day. Along with the surgery the bill was just under $22,000 reimbursed at 90%. Over the last year of his life, our boy was in and out of the hospital quite a bit. Thankfully insurance continued to pay. His premiums did go up from time to time. There is NO lifetime maximum and his deductible was only $100. We will not be without Healthy Paws the company never batted an eyelash at any bill and paid us within 7-10 days (faster once we started doing direct deposit).

Oh I also wanted to mention one more thing. I had a cat for 20 years. She basically cost me nothing until she was 18 and then it was 2 years of vet appointments but I was broke and didn't have insurance but what I was lucky enough to get was charity. At the time there were three charities here that would hold yard sales and basically take all the money they raised and put it towards people in need...and they trusted if you called them with need to help you. They worked alongside a vet clinic so one of the places was called Forgotten Felines and they asked me how much of a 900 dollar bill I could afford. I said nothing and they put 600 dollars straight to the vet office and told me to contact another charity and that one put 185 towards the vet bill as they were splitting money among two other people and I told them I had had help. They then told me of one more but that one had run out of funds.....and honestly I was able to scrounge the rest of the money from somewhere. I made it work. The point I am making here is there will be people without pet insurance but they should be aware if they call around to vet offices and animal shelters they might be able to find out about charities to help them in their time of need.

Great, comprehensive assessment of a quasi-complicated subject -- with a lot of considerations. I'm a businessman, and I'm of a mature age. Pet insurance can be pretty complicated with a) how many factors there are to consider; b) the large number of companies offering such; c) the animated, liiiittle bit tricky methods premiums and plans are offered; d) a little bit of a blind alley about what yours and your pet's future needs may be! Thanks for breaking this down a step at a time. There is no finite or perfect answer... but your assessment helped filter a lot of the noise. Thanks!

Get pet insurance even if it means cutting back monthly on other things.
I enrolled my dog Teddy in 2015 with HealthyPaws after many of my previous dogs had arthritis and hip issues as they aged. I figured this would be worth it down the road since hes also a big dog, a Akita/German Shep mix. I signed him up for the 90%, $100 annual deductible plan. The plan started around the 35 dollar mark and every year has gone up but its still worth it. It is at about 75 a month now but pet insurance allows you to be VERY aggressive in treating any illness. They cover his monthly glucosamine shots and his UTI treatments, it all adds up. And it also provides you peace of mind.
Roughly 2 years into having him he had a mast cell tumor pop up on his chest. Was able to have that removed surgically and HealthyPaws covered every penny of what they stated they would. That ended up being well over 3000 dollars.
Last week he was having neurological issues and discovered during a MRI that he has a brain tumor that is inoperable. However because of pet insurance, he just started radiation and chemotherapy and I hope I am able to prolong his life with the best quality he can have and this is only because of pet insurance.
I was on the fence like many others but I won't ever had a dog without it now. Shave your phone bills or cable bills if you have to, its worth it folks.

Thank you for sharing this. So happy to hear you were able to treat your pup. My pup also had a brain tumor that was inoperable. We opted for the same treatment (and we were going to pay around $8K out of pocket for it). Unfortunately, he passed a day before treatment was supposed to start, so we were out thousands and still lost him. We chose the cheaper vet/hospital hours away which took weeks to get him in so I still feel guilt over that. With insurance, we would have gotten him right into treatment locally. It's the reason I now share how valuable pet insurance is - but I didn't share that story in the video. Best of luck to you and the pup. Cherish every moment!!

Teddy is doing well so far post radiation and he does chemo each month for 5 days. Gets his 3 month post radiation MRI in early October to see how well the radiation took to the brain tumor. Healthy Paws has covered every dime of his treatment.

Yes please get insurance for your pets. I just learned the hard way. I recently had to make the very hard decision to put my dog down after she was diagnosed with diabetes and pancreatitis. It happened so quick. She suddenly stopped eating and was constantly vomiting. Took her to the emergency and that’s when I found out. She was there for about 3 days but was getting worse by the day, so I had to make the decision. I had no idea about pet insurance until that happened but by then it was too late. This situation shattered my heart into pieces and I wish I had known before. I ended up paying $7000 just to turn around and have to put her down. PLEASE learn from me and get insurance for your pets because they are family and it is very hard especially when it could have been possible to do more for them to get better.

Something important to add: Exotic pets (rabbit, birds, snake, hedgehogs, chinchilla(!) etc.) can be covered and SHOULD be covered by pet insurance, if not required. Exotics are so expensive because they require extra years of practice/vet school and are so obscure. Emergency vet visits start at 150 just to see my rabbit, nothing about diagnostics or anything. It was almost 400 to spay her.
In my bun's life (was cut short at just shy of 3 years old), she cost me easily 4000-5000. As soon as I was ready to bring home another bun, the first thing I did was get him on the highest level of insurance.

So it looks like someone is buying out pet insurance and turning the policies into complete trash now that COVID19 has hit. Everyone is having problems with there policies and the money is also going up out of the blue. And the complaints are pouring in starting in June 2020. So now I'm like, well who owns these companies? Nationwide LLC DOESN'T own Nationwide Pet Insurance, wait what? Yea, They don't own their own Pet Insurance. So do I believe we need Pet Insurance, yes but is there even a good company out there anymore?

I've read reviews on the pet insurance companies you recommended and they all seem so horrible. Theres a tendency for people to say that these companies just want your money and will do anything in their power to avoid reimbursement. This makes my heart break. I want a fur baby so bad but I would feel extremely guilty if I cant provide for them with the best. My boyfriend and I initially thought pet insurance was the way to go to help our future pup in their lifetime. But after reading all the reviews my head and heart hurts and it almost seems like your better off bitting the bullet and paying out of pocket anyways. 😢

It can all be pretty complicated. Based on other comments, it seems a lot has even changed in the last year or so (I wonder if it has to do with the craziness that is 2020). It's great you're doing your research and I hope you find a great company so you can add a furry friend! One thing to keep in mind with reviews that I always remind myself - people tend to leave reviews if they've had really good OR really bad experiences. I'm not saying that's what you found, but perhaps. I've definitely read the horror stories too.
