I got a tattoo recently and the owner of the tattoo shop was telling me about soldier who was the victim of an IED attack in the Middle East. He had extensive scaring down his arm, over his shoulder and onto his chest and as a result of the tight skin and scaring he was unable to lift his arm above 45° angle. When all of his wounds were healed and the scarring had reached a point where it could be tattooed, he had a sleeve, shoulder and chest piece done over the course of about six months, and by the time it was done he could lift his arm almost over his head. I asked whether it could just be natural rehabilitation but apparently the effects were noticed by the soldier hours of completing the first lot of tattoos.
+Evan Gallegos one side of the mirror has more light than the other. it's actually super simple. if you light up both sides equally it's like a very reflective window
With few exceptions I think internal (adhesion) scars are potentially the worst. They are adhesive (similar to fascial tissue that binds your skin to your body) and can (in some rare cases) cause organs to stick together internally where no one can see the scars without surgical procedures. This adhesive tissue is generally "thickest" around the inside of surgical scars, but with time it can spread inside the afflicted area of the body. Adhesions can also cause intense pain if these scars develop near nerves. The scars can cause infertility, they can restrict one's mobility if they develop near the pelvis/hips, and they can even cause problems as serious as bowel obstructions. They sometimes aren't treatable with lasers. These are commonly caused by organ rupture (such as the spleen or the appendix) and surgery. This most often happens near the spine, heart, hands, feet, and abdomen/pelvis. Adhesive scar tissue is a fact if you ever had surgery, but it's rarely a severe problem for patients. (If you ever felt stiffness after surgery, this could be from adhesions and you may require physical therapy to regain full mobility, for example.) However, for those that experience deeper issues with adhesions, this can be a more permanent life altering change. The interesting thing about internal scar tissue is that it's often treated by surgery, but surgery is the very thing that causes the adhesive tissue to form. This means that in a few rare cases treatment can only offer a temporary "Catch 22" type of solution where the patient reports temporary relief followed by increased problems of the same nature due to the creation of more surgical scarring. Whenever possible it's usually best to use non-surgical treatments for adhesions in my humble opinion. While these scars don't leave the patient with any physical changes to their appearance, adhesions can impact one's life just as much if not more.
Hello Scishow, would like to share a story about my own scars. I am 16.5 year old, and about half a year ago, i was at a Geologic trip to Kamchatka with my father, a geologist. anyway, at some point of our journy, we got to a place with high amounts of volcanic action. hot springs, gayzers and all sorts of cool stuff. long story short i slipped into a very hot, bubbling spring of muddy water, causing severe 2-3rd degree burns on both of my legs up to my knee. after 2 months in the hospital, I now use silicone sheets and pressure bandages, on both of my legs from my ankle, down. the rest of my leg, up to my knee, had restored itself without much scarring to none, but both of my legs are severly scarred from my ankle down. just thought to share since this video came up. keep it awesome guys.
My sister is a esthetician working for a dermatologist who has recommendations for treating wounds, cuts or whatever as they heal to prevent scarring. One which I followed (mostly) and it didn't scar. Which was actually a little disappointing. I liked the cut going through my eyebrow it bad me look badass.... Except for how I got it... Carrying a not life size, but still large Tardis into a rental truck and heading my forhead either on the Tardis or the truck "ceiling" because I am 6'5'' and everything is built for hobbits....
I appreciate this video so much. After the most stressful semester of college last year, I developed little bumps on my hand that I would accidentally pop if I was washing my hands or just absentmindedly scratch at my skin. They would get infected no matter how well I treated them, and I once reached a point where I had to go to the doctor because they hurt so bad. I couldn't even put my hands down with the blood pulsing throughout my hands.... I now have these ugly looking red marks on my hands, and even though the scars have faded over the year, I still have these red splotches that won't go away. I had NO clue that laser therapy even existed! I hope there's a doctor nearby that could preform this procedure for me... Thanks Scishow! 😄
seriously all my scars have stupid stories behind them - my chin hit a piece of metal (8) - i tripped while running at night (14) - i stepped on diving goggles in a swimming bath (15) scars in my case are only remaining injuries after something stupid happened
I have a really small scar on my left palm from picking up a piece of a speed bump that was broken into pieces by a snow plow last year. Pretty exciting story right!
When I was little I fell and didn't put my hand in front of me of course. My entire forehead and nose was bleeding and I don't have any scars on my forehead nor nose. Nothing.
Personally, I love scars, they're a testament to our survival or healing, some scars are useful in showing the world what we have lived through. I understand why many get them removed, and that is their prerogative and I respect their choices.
Become healing and growth are two separate functions. Our body doesn't know exactly how many cells are damaged in an injury, so it dumps enough collagen into a damaged area until the wound is filled, blood vessels are closed, and the the nerves stop screaming that there is still damage.
Here's a question that I've been wondering for a while: What happened to the protoplanet Theia after the Moon forming impact? Or is it just assumed that Theia was destroyed by the impact?
For me scars (I have only one from my childhood) are like evidence that my life really happened back then. Scars are like temporal placeholders. Memories can be distorted, photo's can be lost, other people that were present will pass away. After a while you can starts thinking "did my early life really happened?" Then you look at the scar and say "yes it did".
New SciShow episodes always come after the midnight when I should be going to sleep and the next thing I notice is that I am watching Scishow videos about butt hair and urinal cakes and the clock is 4.
After i had some dental surgery i had some stitch scarring on the inside of my cheeks near the back. Normally they’re small and unnoticeable but every now and then they’ll swell up and it is SUPER easy to accidentally bite down on- especially since it’s positioned right above a bottom molar
I have a scar on my left wrist (from scratching it on a Christmas tree and then it itching for 6 months after) right over the place where doctors take your pulse. Useful, especially for someone whose blood vessels are impossible to find (and probably has O- blood without a certain type of antibody.)
I have a scar from an elbow surgery that I had last year, one from when my sister sliced my finger open with the lid of a can (on accident I think), and a bunch on my shins from when I hit them on the bars when I did gymnastics.
I just finished healing up from a cut that was all the way to the bone. It was on the front of my foot at the joint, the day it happened a tendon was visible. It happened while I was walking on very slimy concrete blocks and slipped, my foot slammed into the other block with the full weight of my body, making a very deep gash.
I have a hypertrophic scar on my knee from falling on black ice when going for the Metro to school three years ago. It's been really weird, it was kind of ballooned for a long time after the scab came off.
Yeah sometimes when you turn too quickly something happens and you get a sharp pain behind your ear that ends up making a feeling of warmth radiating outwards from the area.
I fell out of a tree when I was 7 and tore the bebeepiness out of my leg. The scar is part of my identity to such an extent that whenever I remember that other people don't have one there, it feels weird and incorrect.
I had a tumor removed from my spine which left me with a BIG scar on my back. I didn't do anything to make it fade or get rid of it because in a strange way, despite its ugliness, I'm proud of it. It's quite literally a battle scar.
I have a few, one on my wrist from cutting it on a rock while climbing, one one my leg from slipping while climbing, one on my eye brow from having a clump of veins removed, and some self harm ones (but I won't go into that)
I had my lower inner arm burned with a hot metal (like half the size of my hand) and in the beginning it was really painful and you looked at open flesh. In the hospital they rinsed it and gave me a cream for the pain but after 2-3 days I cleaned it and let it air dry and started to massage it with baby oil and a steril cotton pad. It healed so good you can't tell I burned it so bad.
I've got some great scar stories. When I was two I tripped over a vacuum while helping my dad put up curtains and stabbed myself in the neck with a screw driver, then there's one on my leg from a time I was moving. I had stored a bunch of knives in a bag, then when a door closed behind me it hit the bag and pushed the blades of the knives through and over my leg.
My leg fell into a pool skimmer when I was seven and I now have a large scar on my leg where no hair grows. No treatment can change that, or we'd have the key to curing baldness.
I took part of the tip of my finger off. I ended up bandaging my finger with the flap of skin still attached. Even now, over a decade later that part is still thick and white with no sense of touch
I'm surprised you didn't talk about how fetuses in the womb heal wounds without scarring, and how there is some research going into this to see if we can replicate this on their adult counterparts
It's weird how the location of scars affects their healing. I can see years-old cat scratches in my arms easily, but last summer when our (then)tomcat(now just 'cat') seriously attacked me (tried to go for my eyes, but my skills in martial arts sent him flying a good two meters), I got several large and long scars in my upper arms and below my breast, but I can't even point out where they were anymore.
My upper lip basically got ripped off and bit my tongue completely off. But I kept my lip saturated in silicon vitamin E gel until the stitches were removed. It's hardly noticeable now, but the grand canyon across my tongue is still visible. Some toothpastes and food can irritate and cause it to swell. Why is that?
I've got a giant scar over my appendix area, after the surgery wound from appendicitis got infected and they had to open it and let it heal from open. If anyone asks I just say I got the scar from The War.
You think you'll be really upset if you ever end up with big scars. But at least in my case, that didnt happen at all. I got a staph infection that left me covered with skin ulcer scars. Including a pretty big one on my face. (That hurt a lot, by the way.) But it doesnt upset me. Well I mean, it doesn't upset me in an appearance way. It makes shaving really tedious and slow, and makes me pretty nervous cause its oddly shaped, which is annoying. But thats about it.
But what about my mental scars?
+FrothyBumSqueeze Those never heal :(
+BarrowsOre they dont heal .
BECAUSE I COVER THEM WITH THE BONES OF MY ENEMYS

Could you do an episode on skin diseases like eczema and psoriasis?
What about stretch marks? Are they like scars, or are they something different? And how can you get rid of them?
Yes please!!!!
+Emily C Yes, they are hypertrophic scars. Like Hank said, they can fade to very pale/unnoticeable with time.
Can yall do a video on one way mirrors and how they work? that would be really interesting
+Evan Gallegos one side of the mirror has more light than the other. it's actually super simple. if you light up both sides equally it's like a very reflective window

Why does minty stuff make stuff like water feel cold
there's actually already a video of that! it's called "why are minty things cold, and spicy things hot? :)
It's because mint activates our cold receptors.
That thumbnail was a noticeably strange pick.

Hello Scishow, would like to share a story about my own scars. "difficult to painful...." I'm listening Hank green... always listening....
Can you do a similar video about stretch marks and any remedies?
I love it when Hank Green hosts the episodes
I don't get why many people don't like their scars. they look badass
My stretch marks and acne scars don't look very badass.

DAMNIT HANK! You should've started with "Do you wanna know how I got these scars"
this is the most beautiful thumbnail I've ever had the pleasure of laying eyes upon

A scar is a proof that something tried to kill you but failed. You won and proof is your scar. You're beautiful, be proud of surviving.
+alice Yes! For example every time I wear a T-shirt I have an excuse to brag about how I won that one time the glass door tried to kill me but failed.

well my acne certainly isn't going to kill me,though it has given me more than one scar :3
Please stop.

Hank, I saw your appearance on Good Mythical Morning
And might I say you were great :D
Can you talk about scar tissue and the healing process as it applies to recovering from internal injuries? For example a severe ankle sprain.
I have a scar from an elbow surgery that I had last year, one from when my sister sliced my finger open with the lid of a can (on accident I think), and a bunch on my shins from when I hit them on the bars when I did gymnastics.

Ah, I guess that's how he got these scars. Fascinating!
Why does our heart feel like its sinking when we get tragic news?
Question: Why do I get that sharp pain behind my ear when I turn too fast?
What? Never experienced that
Yeah sometimes when you turn too quickly something happens and you get a sharp pain behind your ear that ends up making a feeling of warmth radiating outwards from the area.
Thanks, Oliver Paytruns!
Hanks back!!!!
I fell out of a tree when I was 7 and tore the bebeepiness out of my leg. The scar is part of my identity to such an extent that whenever I remember that other people don't have one there, it feels weird and incorrect.

does everyone have birthmarks? and if so why ?
Good question
+sham2mar Everyone has a birthscar, at least.
+sham2mar I dont. But I may have when I was born. I understand several forms of birthmarks fade away after a few years.

Gotta calm down on the porn
thanks, now, when anyone asks what those things on my forehead are I can sound really smart and say they're atropic scars
+Max Fux i thought it was an airbender tattoo

I have a few, one on my wrist from cutting it on a rock while climbing, one one my leg from slipping while climbing, one on my eye brow from having a clump of veins removed, and some self harm ones (but I won't go into that)
DUDE SCARS ARE SO COOL THEY MAKE YOU BEAST AND AWESOME
I had my lower inner arm burned with a hot metal (like half the size of my hand) and in the beginning it was really painful and you looked at open flesh. In the hospital they rinsed it and gave me a cream for the pain but after 2-3 days I cleaned it and let it air dry and started to massage it with baby oil and a steril cotton pad. It healed so good you can't tell I burned it so bad.
hey bro please if u r reading this....I'm going through same problem , please reply me
what are stretch marks then? are they considered scars or are the different because they're not made by a wound?
I've got some great scar stories.
