    Joe, thank you for backing up what I have been telling my friends about these poles for a few years. I fell in love with the PCT and backpacking in 2016 and your PCT thru hike videos were the first I ever watched. I have since section hiked the first 210 miles of the PCT (I live in San Diego) and have hiked sections in Big Bear and the Sierra and am planning my thru hike of it in 2019. Keep the great videos coming. On another note, I make and post my own RUclips channel PCT hikes on the different Facebook PCT groups, and your mom wrote me there and said she was your mom and she liked my videos and subscribed. That was very cool and she said she was very proud of you. I told her about you being the first thru hike for the PCT I ever watched and she thought that was cool. Would love to hear from you, but either way keep up the great videos, I really enjoy them...

    An added bonus with these poles, they make a great antenna. When I'm using my poles to pitch a tarp, it's easy to prop my mp3 player against the trekking pole at my head. Improves FM reception.

    Loved mine until about 250 miles in when one tip got caught between two rocks when I was going downhill......snapped about 6 inches up from the tip. Also when I was out on the JMT I found some pieces of one when going over a snow field, someone fell and snapped one of them and they didn’t pick up all the pieces.... I repaired mine with an old fiberglass rod and two part glue stuff. They still work but now one weighs several ounces more than the other so I went ahead and bought a new set from black diamond and love them, they weigh more but are more durable, love the videos and the editing!
    Thanks

    I just got these poles and cannot wait to give them a try. I am new to back packing and cost was a big factor getting all the new gear. Love the Costco deal! Thanks for posting this review. Nice to know I have a good start with these poles.

    I have had these poles for about 350 miles and I love them. I weight ranges from 220 to 230 and they have saved my butt from falling multiple times. I would definitely purchase them again and they for the FYI on the tips.

    Nice to see these reviewed! I too purchased these about a year ago. Wasn’t lucky enough to find them at Costco and instead picked them up on Amazon for about $45. I have put about 1500 Miles on them so far and have no complaints! My tips are still good and the grips have only gotten better! I recommend! Agreed: no left and right straps is my only criticism.

    I got these as a present a few years ago and they sat in my basement until last summer. I agree with everything you said. Great poles for the money. I live in Denver and hike the Rockies quite often and I pretty much just use these 100% of the time. Great videos Joe. I'm a big fan.

    I picked these up for the CDT when you'd mentioned them last year. Worked great! Used to pitch my soloplex as well. I did lose one off the side of the trail when I almost slipped to my death.

    We purchased two pairs of the Cascade Mountain poles in 2015. I have used them exclusively since Spring 2015. I've used them hiking in the Northern and Central cascades in Spring, Summer and Fall. I used them on snow shoe trips near Mount Rainier. I took them with me on trips to the Az Superstiions and Northern CA PCT. I have never had an issue with them and love the versatility.Cant beat the pricing..

  • @adventureswithfrodo2721

    Actually they are superior to the lake poles. The lock mechanism will fail, particularly in cold weather if you try to adjust them, the leki poles that is. The lock on the is not as heavy duty as BD poles, but it isbetter then the friction twist lock. Thanks.

  • @rtsteele567

    A fair review. Mine have about 1000 miles on them. They outlasted a pair if Leki's (shock cord broke). I agree with most everything you said.

    Thanks for the review, Joe. I never used poles until my wife let me try some of her Walmart (Ozark Trails - sub $20) jobs. Next hike I had a pair too. Intention was to get used to them, then invest in something nicer later. Those held fine, so I never did replace them. Not light, but tough. Hope to find a local Costco for a pair of these you reviewed.

      Before I had hiked the AT I thought that poles were just for older people, but boy was I ever wrong. I feel naked hiking without poles now. I've found that Costco tends to stock items at different times, depending where you live. You may want to call ahead to make sure they have them. Thanks!

    • @flysubcompact
      @flysubcompact 6 лет назад +1

      I thought they were for yuppies and old folks (like me), too, but now I call them "4WD poles". That really counts when crossing streams, in rough terrain or when your legs are about at their limit. My least favored terrain is "rocky downhill". That is where they shine for my use if I'm beat.

    • @BackcountryBanter
      @BackcountryBanter  6 лет назад

      I second that. Trekking poles make downhills soooo much smoother and less hurtful.

      I also started out with the Ozark Trail poles from Walmart. But I found a pair of twist type aluminium poles with cork handles at Walmart.com for 23 bucks. Can't remember the name, but they have lasted a couple of years so far.

    I’ll back up everything Joe said here. I have the slightly older versions (blue color, no cork grip) but the same brand and same material. I’ve used them on almost every hike for the past 2 years and they’ve held up perfectly. I also use them to pitch my trekking pole tent when backpacking and they work great for that as well. Like Joe said, totally worth the price while still being lightweight and incredibly durable.

    I'm on my third season with these poles and so far, so good. They come with a set of plain rubber tips along with all the other types. I use those with an additional rubber chair leg tip over it (Walmart, $1.75 for four). The 7/8 ID work perfectly. When they wear through I just replace them. Grip much better on hard surfaces, especially rock, than the carbide tips.

    Costco currently has a $7 rebate on these Trek Poles. Well, in Westminster CO. Not sure if all do. I'll be using these for the first time on July 22nd for a trial back-packing trip. I'm getting ready to do a week on the Colorado Trail. Thanks for the review!

    I'm in the same boat as you man. I own a pair of Leki 'Makalu' poles and when I tried my girlfriends Cascade Mountain Tech ones I honestly like them a little bit better. My poles were $180 new so that's saying something. Definitely one of the best bargains on the internet. You don't have to spend a lot of money to have a good gear. Case in point are these poles and the BRS Stove

    I've seen these recommended by loads of RUclipsrs for people looking for lightweight gear on a budget. Carbon fibre poles with cork grips and flick locks for this price? You can't really go wrong with these. I was a bit worried they might break so your comments about these being a bit more beefy was really helpful. Thanks a lot!

    Great review. These look alot like the hiker hunger poles sold on Amazon for around $70. Same hardware, cork grips, poles, markings, extra rubber feet, snow baskets and bag. I've been really liking these poles and their light weight. They also work great with a duplex. Great review and production. Wish I had seen this before I bought the hiker hunger poles so I could have saved some money. But even at $70 these poles are a good value in my opinion.

    • @BackcountryBanter

    These are the only poles I know. I live in the south so you won't find them in Costco here. I got them from amazon for 45.00. I gave them to my son and ordered the cascade mountain tech aluminum poles for $15.99, there a oz or so heavier but have a fantastic swing weight. Great reveiw!!

    I've got both Black Diamond and Leki cork handle poles and must say I prefer BD's straps better due to the thumb pads. Only got the Leki because of their replacement policy. However, for the Costco cost difference I'd give the Cascade poles a try if they were ever stocked in South Florida. I'll look on line to see if they available.

  • @backpacker3421
    @backpacker3421 6 лет назад +2

    Thanks so much! Wonderful review. One thought, given with no hands-on with these poles. At about 5:00, you talk about right vs left handedness. The straps look as if you could take one pole and unthread the strap completely, flip it, and rethread it to make them mirror images, essentially giving you a R/L setup. No idea, but curious to know if it's possible.

      Probably depends on the store. I actually saw them (big box) a few weeks ago when I was there but didn't look at them. I'm going to check them out next time. Always worried CF might break, but for $30 it worth picking them up as a beater and giving them a try, if they hold up I might switch over as my primary pole. Thanks for the great review.

    We have done really well with some costco hiking items. Trekking poles, 20 degree sleeping bags, and convertible hiking pants. Sign up for Costco product emails. Some deals/products aren't sold in every store. Also, if you don't have a membership to Costco.....have someone who does buy you gift cards to Costco .....no membership needed. 😉

    what are your thoughts on...I'm just going to walk around the neighborhood maybe 1 mile per day to build up my sore knees. I weigh 240#. Would the aluminum work as well or would carbon be much better/ Just wondered. Thank You great and informative vid

    • @BackcountryBanter
      @BackcountryBanter  4 года назад

      Honestly either aluminum or carbon fiber should be just fine. Just make sure you don't get the twist lock poles and opt for the "flick lock" poles with the little levers that lock them. Twist locks (where you twist the poles to lock them into place) are known to fail.

    Sadly, one of mine snapped coming down Kearsarge Pass for a JMT resupply, and ended up knocking me off the trail. I'm 67 with a TKR and really need them. I was using them hard, and they had served me well for over a year, but I'm thinking aluminum might be the ticket for me. My old Lekis are heavy, but took huge abuse on my first JMT in 2017.
