I have used a Bell siphon my duck pond and hydroponic gardens. Putting a culvert drain is the common way to maintain pond levels but as you said erosion is an issue. We do not have ponds here but retention areas are common along roads and near parking lots.

Great content, and a very practical explanation.
    Good job!

The stand pipe method likely works better. Jon over on FarmCraft101 just did a pond build for his neighbor where he installed one and also has one in his own pond. The flow is likely restricted by the pipe size one chooses but sounded like a more real-time solution than the siphon method since the draining happens sooner. You may benefit from checking it out. Happy building o7

Have a 12" on a 10 acre pond. Works flawless. I dont have a pipe above drain. Water dont rise or fall much. Your air pipe is not ideal. Mine comes straight out of 12". With a short elbow.

I never used a siphon pipe but I like the idea it would take a major load off of the spillway we put it I have to fix it every couple years from the erosion even though it’s made of concrete I’ll have to give that siphon pipe a try I got a good little bit of 6” I could weld up a stuff in there

Give it a shot. PVCs pretty cheap and easy. Well, I guess it’s not cheap anymore lol

Can I use a system like this to run a waterfall on my pond 24hrs a day without electricity? If so I'm going to build 1

If the waterfall is lower than the pond yes

I don't get how it starts. Doesn't the top of the pipe has to have water to start siphoning ? Something has to make the initial suck right?

    • @TaylorWelding

yes, when the pond goes above the 4 inch it will start a siphon

So the breather pipe or air pipe, this has to have water in it to stop the syphoning,or no water .. sorry if this sounds a stupid…
