Emergency Heat In Winter | Ideas For Staying Warm!

  • Many of us have suffered through power outages at one time or another. Hopefully they don't last longer than a couple of hours, but what if the temperatures outside are deadly cold? How do you keep your home warm until power is restored? Here in the video I show you three options to creating heat in an emergency situation.
It's always a good idea to plan for these things before they actually happen. With a little luck you may not ever need to use them, but if you do it would be nice to know you're ready. Winter is not a time to be unprepared. Along with all your cold season clothing, make sure to have back up heat ready. Thanks for watching!

I think this is a great idea for emergency heat and light! I am blessed to have had electricity through this Texas ice storm but so many in my family and throughout the country have not so have needed this!! My nephew and family have been without power since this started nearly a week ago and live out in the country so it has been a cold adventure for them! My heart goes out to all those and to the homeless who have had to live in this arctic deep freeze! The TP/alcohol heater reminds me of the penny stoves used for cooking back in the day, made from soda cans and alcohol and insulation. I have also seen those made on YT. They don’t burn long, just long enough to cook a pot of something, so I don’t imagine this would either, but for an emergency, this is a super idea! Thank you!

Great ideas. I am concerned about carbon monoxide poisoning though . Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought that anything that gave off a flame released carbon monoxide. I really liked your coffee can idea. That would be something that almost everyone has on had and it would be so easy to use. Thank you for some really great ideas!

    • @HomesteadingWays
      @HomesteadingWays  7 лет назад +9

The coffee can heater/stove is a method folks have been using for quite some time and it's safety has been debated as to the carbon monoxide factor. Overall, it's my understanding that alcohol burns pretty clean with little to no carbon monoxide, but to be on the safe side you may want to crack a window as I mentioned. Apparently, the burn gives off water vapor and carbon dioxide when there is enough oxygen in the room. I worry more about the flame, but you can use the can's lid or a plate on top of the can to regulate the flame and control the amount of fuel burned. Thank you for commenting! :)

@Jo Ann Johnson, so sorry to hear that. I pray God will help everyone without electricity or heat during this cold weather. I live in a house I just bought a couple months ago. Old house. Was unaware there was no caulking on anything,,,until I began painting walls. So I bought a case of caulk and each time I did a room, I caulked it. It has really helped me alot. My house is above ground, and I found out, not very good insulated. So now I have frozen pipes. It's the hot water only. So waiting for this sun to thaw it out and pray there are no busted pipes. I come from an area where there is no snow, to a place that snows haha. So yea, it's a bit of challenge. But, I have gone around to make sure everything is caulked. I have hardwood floors, so I put every blanket I could find on floors, opened all curtains to let sun in. So far? It is helping to keep heat in. As far as no electricity, I do have that, So I can only suggest the things I have done to keep heat in. And to maybe get a way to heat just one room in house. And if you have an outside bbq grill? I would warm up some water on it for coffee, food, etc. If you use the method of oil or candles, please be careful and ventilate the area. Please be safe and I wish I could push a button and make everyone safe and warm. God bless you.

Make sure the propane heaters are for indoor use. A lot of them are for outdoor camping type of activity.
The alcohol burner was in a room of what size? How cold was it outside? That's a cool little idea.
I say a wood stove is the best as long as you have wood to burn. Some rocket stove heaters are now getting UL certifications. Fast heat up, you can cook on them, and if you do it right you can have a mass heater to keep your area warm after the fire goes out. No creosoting in the flu because everything is burned up in the heater. Actually, the flu can be touched with a bare hand. But, don't touch the stove part.

Never,EVER, EVER, EVER add alcohol fuel until it has been TOTALLY extinguished & cool! Alcohol flame can be invisible except in the dark, & you risk a flash fire in the refueling bottle!
Ideally, a metal paint can with a lid to extinguish the flame will stop any flame. Wait until cool to the touch before opening to add fuel.

Creating micro a climate(smaller space to stay warm) by hanging blankets , mylar reflective blankets to insulate/as a heat barrier works too. In a jam a roll of foil could work too. Of course transferring the heat to water like hot water bottle is good way to keep warmer since water can retain the heat for a long period of time. Fire extinguishers and baking soda are good in case of accidents.

If I remember correctly burning alcohol results in o=c=o or CO2 or Carbon Dioxide this is not as bad CO but it is easy to become oxygen deprived by it. CO2 is heavier than oxygen. This means that the room will be filled from the floor up. Lack of oxygen is as we know not the best for the body. Keep the window open ennough for the CO2 to escape, do not sleep on a low bed.

Nice. What kind of airflow do you have in your house while you're burning alcohol and tp?

Well, for the short time it was burning I had a window cracked. No one hurt or hospitalized, thankfully. I appreciate your concern! 😊

You could skip the toilet paper. Its really not doing much & the alcohol isn't going to explode or anything. All the TP is doing is if you knock over you don't have as much super heated flammable liquid pouring out

You should use a quart can for alcohol and toilet paper a large can like that will cause the flame to be hire and cause more soot.

I thought we're not suppose to use propane in the house. Doesn't it create a carbon dioxide situation?

People have used alcohol lamps and "heaters" for a long time. Crack a window for ventilation. This is for emergency use not an every day heat source.
