I have my 2007 Chevy Silverado Classic 2500HD LBZ professionally treated with Fluid Film annually. My truck came from MO and had limited salt exposure. Just had some front end parts replaced. Installed a FASS lift pump. Keeping it stock otherwise. Thinking about EGR delete. My spare tire was locked in place but got it free - use plenty of lube in the release mechanism one you get it free. Doing a little bit every year. 159,000 miles. I run Power Service Diesel Additive. Really good video. I use my pickup to haul my camper - it is a beast.
I've got 2 lb7s 1 04 silverado bone stock with a lift pump the other one is an 03 sierra and I threw everything but the kitchen sink at it I bought it stock with 275,000 miles immediately put a set of 30 over nozzles and a 64mm turbo did the tap shift conversion and I pull a skid steer with a forestry mulcher on it and various other attachments it puts my GVW at just under 30,000 lbs fully loaded I ran it till the head gaskets popped it stretched the head bolts on the bottom side of the passenger head I ordered freedom racing cupless heads grade C gaskets ARP studs and now I'm not even remotely worried about it it's a tank I knew it was going to blow the head gaskets I'm a diesel mechanic by trade so running it on the 230hp tune all the time towing a full load it was inevitable so I can't blame the truck for that and the stock transmission will hold about 500-550hp depending on how you drive it if you drive like you have some sense you won't have transmission problems until they just live out their natural life the tap shift conversion plays a big roll in rhat being able to force downshift with the push button on steep grades is crucial to transmission life because you know exactly when it is going to downshift so you can lift off the throttle a little and take harsh heavy downshifts out of the equation I LOVE that truck it's going on about 350,000 now and if the transmission dies tomorrow I'm not even mad it's long since paid for itself and it just gives me an excuse to get Ryan's diesel service to build me a bulletproof transmission I'm gonna do something stupid with the silverado I just haven't decided yet
Once the issues are addressed that were short comings from the factory an lb7 is a very good engine. I’ve got an 04 3500 that’s got 276k on it and I’ve come to love it now that the normal issues have been addressed. I did a fass system head studs industrial injection 45% over injectors 64mm Lincoln turbo new tunes tcm tuned new cam pin and retorque front cover seal all new fuel lines lbz fpr ac delco water pump valve cover gaskets new radiator trans cooler line upgraded to hydraulic ends new tcase back half with pump rub kit 3” down pipe tap shifter and I’m sure there’s more but all that cost me less than a new 100k dually and it will run down the road with 15-18k lbs behind it just fine. No payment and it’s treated me extremely well can’t complain a bit. I’ve got a 97 3500 Cummins 4x4 and 01 Cummins 4x4 both 5spd but enjoy my lb7 just as much as those.
He recommended Hotshot fuel additive. I ran it for years until I found Archoil. Archoil will make a huge difference. More power,. better fuel economy and my truck idles perfectly. I run it in my equipment also, it keeps the DPF clean and regens are back up from 8 hr to almost 40 hrs between regens.
Hey Dustin, nice job. I have an ‘03 that has been in my possession since’09. 180,000 miles. On its third and last set of injectors (I will never have another set put in it). Yes, SAC style, yes worth it imo. I’ve had pretty much every problem known with this truck except for the pump rub. She has a few upgrades now including a lift pump. They really woke her up. Don’t race it or anything like that. I just use it. Regular maintenance!!! Trans has never been hot. Fun to drive!
2002 long bed crew cab with 220k. Bought it at 75k. Unknown on the injectors...so far so good, fingers crossed they were done before I bought it. I used it to haul kids and sports gear around the last 15 years. Here's what it's needed. 165k & 180k Drivers side the passenger side unit bearing hub. 175k Drivers side window regulator. Now at 220 every other one has gone out. 180k Driveline Carrier Bearing 190k Drivers seat cushion had no cush. 200k Low pressure fuel lines deteriorated and was letting air in the lines. 215k Water Pump 220k Hydroboost. That seems pretty good to me?
I have a 03 GMC Sierra with 77K original and original owner. I noticed a slight haze of smoke so ended up doing an injector flush with 1 gallon of marble mystery direct bypassing the tank. after all is done it ends up more haze when it reaches normal temp. The balance rate on cylinder 4 is between 4-5.5 and others is there as well 2.5-3. the injector was replaced under warranty when it was less than 40K. I added diesel injector power service cleaner and lubricity but still went bad. Plan to replace all 8 injectors myself with SAC-type injectors and install an additional fuel filter cleaner.
Great review, Dustin. That’s something that I have never owned in my 70 years walking on this earth is a diesel. Just never did pull the trigger on one. Been thinking about maybe the new 1500 Chevy diesel. Thanks for sharing and I want to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!! We will catch you in 2024.
Clean behind the front wheel wells behind the mud flaps. Leaves and dirt will accumulate after falling from the top and settling down in that hallow area. That area can build up to hold a few good handfuls of wet debris, dirt and salt, causing rust to start and moisture get inside the rocker panels.
03, 200000 miles original owner..the front end comes to mind, Im on my 4th, 3 sets of injectors, transfer case, steering box, all of the steering components and hoses, hub bearings , water pump, glow plugs. rotors, calipers and flex lines, lower steering shaft and bearing theres a bunch of other shit Im forgetting….I keep looking at getting a new big truck, I can afford it but they are a waste of money…..I keep this for camper duty and some towing.
This video is awesome. Your truck looks amazing. Thanks for the tips. Ide add a lift pump from air dog as recommended by truck master. I cant wait to get my first duramax. Im dead set on getting an lb7. Ill miss the reliability of my tundra im comparison but im up for the challenge! I need a 3/4 ton work truck/plow truck for my little business.
As of today my 04 gmc sierra 2500hd duramax lb7 4x4 has 366547mi. Runs great. But needing some drivetrain work. Which is going to happen soon. Biggest word of advice. Learn how to work on the truck yourself. Don't depend on a shop. Shop hours for work preformed is crazy to pay.
you told us to look for rust.... but not what to do to either slow it, or prevent it if we are addressing it ahead of time? Sooo... should we undercoat? or does that not do anything with those specific areas?
Theirs a product you can buy from autozone you spay it on the rust and it neutralizes it and makes it a paint able surface. Also is a little rubbery when it dries if you spay it on too thick
I got 2 of them one that is extremely rare and the other is rare too but not as much as the 1st one being a extended cab 8ft bed ZF6 with 97,000 miles and the other is just a extended cab 8ft bed with the 5 speed allison
We bought our Chevy 2002 in late 2001. Brand new. It now had 130,000+ on it. We’ve replaced the injectors and put on a Fass lift pump. So far it’s been a very good truck. The only problem it seems to have is after the injectors were put in the tranny runs hotter. Any ideas?
I would recommend installing a transmission cooler. I just recently put a mishimoto transcooler on my 03 lb7 and even towing the trans temps do not go up higher than 150 and I have yet to do a trans flush I’m currently at 163k miles

My TC leaked and also lost a lot of transmission fluid as well, had holes in it just like you said. Needed a new case :(
Lly still has the 5 speed transmission valve body for the six speed conversion is around 2000 bucks

What did you use for a tune. I just picked up a 02 and would like to slightly boost power.
