    I've got a perfect example of this principal. Last winter it came a slick ice/snow storm in East Tennessee as usual people where caught coming home from work as it dropped several inches of snow/ice in a very short time. I saw several full size trucks, jeeps, very capable 4x4 vehicles getting stuck and sliding of the road. I have a fairly stock 98 grand Cherokee with Good Year wrangler A/T tires I aired down to 15 psi, and was able to go anywhere. At one time I passed a F150 4x4 a brand new Dodge with lift and huge tires up a 30 degree slope with ease. Must air them down

    if you are worried about it try bringing the pressure down slowly. first try 13psi, then if you don't have any problem next time try 12, then 11, then 10. Make sure to carry a spare when you are testing and a way to air up as well.

  • @VMX540fan

    The practical lower limit to tire pressure is the amount of buckling in the sidewall. If the sidewall is not buckling, you can drive it at low speeds until it heats up. Once the sidewall heats up, then the tire pressure needs to be increased or the speed reduced to avoid destroying the tire with excessive heat. When we are snow wheeling (under 30 mph and below freezing) tires can be run all day with no air in them. As they heat up or break in, buckling becomes visible. The pressure needs to be increased to prevent buckling. Some tires need only 2 PSI to prevent buckles. Some require 12 PSI. It is important for your buddies to report buckling to you as you drive. It is also important to keep airing down as you go up the hill and gradually airing back up as you come down. Tire behavior at 2 PSI is greatly effected by elevation pressure and temperature differences. A 1000 foot change in elevation creates a 1 PSI change in tire pressure due to elevation alone. Air will need to be adjusted to get the same performance at the new elevation.

    This is great advice. I have gone as low as 7psi w/o BL in the snow for traction. Normally I will stick with 10-15 on dry ground, but I also wont drive fast and crazy. Never lost a tire.

    I worked in a tire store for many years I talked to many reps that help develop the tires and test them, not just sell them.... They all told me never to air down a Tire off-road, Because it makes the sidewalls weaker basically breaks down the side walls and you're prone to slice the sidewalls a lot easier than if there aired up. I have never done a bead and I have never sliced the sidewall because I've never aired down, I've never had to. This was something that somebody came up with a while back and now everyone's following it just like the Pied Piper.... but this is still America and everybody can do what they want...

    Matt I agree air pressure is key to many things. Snow and sand are the great tests of air pressure in a tires in my opinion. BUT the right tire is always going to break loose first in a open diff vehicle from the torque of the engine twisting the vehicle. Many folks have no clue and wheel with street pressure. To be honest I wheel with street pressure for the extra challenge. I've seen an open diff XJ wheel almost as many places I did with 8 psi tires. Impressive. Thank you for the great vids

  • @MXDRE907
    @MXDRE907 10 лет назад +1

    Hey good vid! Only correction would be that the contact patch gets LONGER as you reduce the air pressure, NOT wider. The bulge you see at the bottom of the tire is the sidewall at the rim (which does not make contact with the ground). Just looking at the tire at ground level from the side will show what I mean. Still very informational, thanks for posting!

    I'm with you on airing down, for me in the snow, just made a video about my experience of getting stuck in a little drift. My questions is 5psi seems way low for the poor tire, can the sidewall hand such a low pressure, seems like a regular non off road tire would be damaged by drive on it at such a low pressure for anything but a very short distance.

    On the question of how much can you air down I would add this advice-more is not always better. I believe there is an optimal pressure to air down to for any given vehicle configuration. Here's the trick.
    1. Park your rig on a flat smooth surface, asphalt is fine concrete is better.
    2. Place a sheet of paper on the ground just in front of each tire and slide under until it just touches the tire tread.
    3. Air down each tire until the tread grips the paper.
    4. Record the tire pressure.
    5. Remove the paper and repeat steps 2-4 until a subsequent air down does not cause the tire to grip the paper.
    6. Add air back in to the last measured pressure.
    7. Do not air down below about 10-12 PSI without bead locks.
    With practice this method gets more efficient. Larger air downs initially getting smaller as the ideal pressure approaches is easier to predict with more practice.
    Why not go further? If the tire pressure is lowered beyond this point the tread at the lowest point in the tyre actually decreases down force and eventually lifts off the surface completely as a concavity of the tire forms in the center. Since the goal is maximizing traction any loss of contact is undesirable.
    Other considerations: This optimization should be adjusted in temperature extremes or when the vehicle weight changes significantly (several hundred lbs). Also, airing down is for low traction, off-road applications. I do not recommend this for any street driving for safety and fuel efficiency reasons. This also means the tires should be aired back up before returning to on road driving for the same reasons. Therefore, a method for airing back up is needed whether it's your own pump or a friend's air canister. Furthermore, there are inherent risks with this type of driving so make sure you have spare tires, tools anf back-up in case things go badly. These things take time but the rewards are great. Good luck!

    • @JonDoe-vd1iu
      @JonDoe-vd1iu 8 лет назад

      Lower is better when off-roading hands down, however low tire pressure give you garbage MPG. IE the optimal PSI for normal travel is a balance of MPG and ride quality as, on pavement, traction is not a problem.

      James Dignan You are right. I could have appreciated the demonstration more if he'd reversed the tire pressures. The engines torque through the driveshaft will naturally lift the passenger side axle and plant the driver's side. This particular demonstration of physics is the best argument for independent rear suspension and I never hear anyone make it.

    Another pro to air down is your less likely to puncture the tire it self. Hard 30 psi tire won't give, so a shard rock will have a better change to puncture thought that. Softer is much less likely to puncture because it will mould around sharp rocks. You can try this with a ballon, try popping a soft ballon, then try a hard one. Same idea

    My Orvis came with the dana 44 rear with trac loc-dana 30 front with 3:73 gears thats part of the Orvis build option.It has less than 85k miles on it.So when the 249 transfer case goes out ill swap in the 243hd T-Case.And i think fuel injection is a great thing nomore coldstarts and a v8 can get 22 mpg with 4x4

    so at 2 minutes... the pickup spinning 1 tire but not the other... wouldnt that be due to no locker and nothing to do with air down? just curious... still gonna like this vid... like the humor you added into it...

      yes it's due to no locker. open differential in the truck. whichever tire has the least traction will spin. his test was to show that the aired down tire doesn't spin, as it always has more traction

      He even said he disabled his jeep's locker for the test... Jeeps cherokees are unibodies and so are a lot lighter. Hence why it didn't even try grabbing.
