      TBF, those artists are paid to produce work that is explicitly going to be used for the LLM. I don't think that's really a big issue, as long as it's explicit commissions. The real issue is when they just update their ToS to include using existing works for LLMs

    This gets to the heart of a problem with copyright and patents especially as computers have sped up the process. Take the weather app. It might be a large number, but there are finite ways to show temperature. Eventually you will hit a point where it isn't possible to create something "unique". What happens when a company gets ownership of all possible music combinations in 30 seconds?

    • @hundvd_7
      @hundvd_7 3 месяца назад +6

      Not just that, but it has to be _good,_ too. There really aren't a lot of ways you can make an 8/10 or better design for a weather app designed primarily for smartphones being held vertically. That is a _lot_ of constraints.
      My Poco's (Xiaomi's) Weather app looks pretty similar, too. And everywhere it deviates from Apple's design is just a straight downgrade. If it was actually well made, it would necessarily have to be even more similar

    • @ChristopherCricketWallace
      @ChristopherCricketWallace 3 месяца назад +1

      someone actually did that to try to stick it to the litigious record labels. Noah Rubin, Damien Riehl coded software to make "music" with as many combinations of notes as possible in order to declare it all creative commons or own the copyright and give it away for free.
      OF COURSE the industry lawyers found a way to thwart them (because they didn't think of it, first, I'm sure).

    I've said it for some time now, generative AI for creators: (designers, illustrators, artists) is still at least half a decade early. If there's any demography to go up in arms against gen AI - that's it. There's a lot of warming up to happen and the last place you should be bringing it into first is the same place this demography exists. On the other hand, I think design as a field is the least automated field and turning on AI at this point might be a bad call in the end.

    What are the odds that their data is trained on licensed Apple designs? For Apple, they might WANT "weather app" to be associated with THEIR weather app. Continue to communicate themselves as the standard. If it were a clone of Carrot, that might seem stranger to me than the AI cloning one of the most objectively popular weather apps on the market today... (not saying it's "right", but also not at all surprised by the results)

    This is one of the instances that demonstrates how these so called "AI" features are stripping off people's work, Somebody or a team of talented individuals studied and worked their asses to become skilled enough and get a job and develop that solution and so called AI just copy work is just insulting. Though I'm less knowledgeable about the backend functionality of generative AI, but training LLM off stuff owned by people without their consent is unethical, that's what I know for sure. These tech companies have an easiest way to get away with everything. Its like an easy an ON-OFF switch for them. Isn't there any authority to govern this?

    I would expect that the AI is using the styleguide attributes of the design, like the font, font-weight, line-height, margin's, padding, colours & type of component/element etc... Then it could create unique designs without needing to copy anything. But they should just make a free tier where part of the terms are that you allow permission for the AI to be trained on your designs in your existing Figma projects. Pay a subscription for newer better features and to disable this behaviour. Companies that care will pay, ordinary users probably won't care and would prefer free limited usage of the AI.

    I love how AI consistently proves itself to be a tool almost exclusively for laziness and theft (especially lazy theft). Worst of it all is that I've actually had it have practical uses. I once used Vibe, a free tool for generating recording transcripts, and it did a pretty good job. So there IS an use. It's just, you know, very niche and plenty far from the mainstream use that got pushed down our throats. So yeah, even if there are actual uses, by now I just want this entire industry dead and buried.

    Gotta admit I don't watch Theo cuz I don't like the format of his videos and the stuff he does. I like primagen way more in this regard. But somehow this video got on my home yt page so I thought, I would give it a try.
    But I think this is the most boring video from Theo I saw, bro its a mobile design and it's a fricking AI. The AI has to learn and train on some material, the same as the designer that will ultimately design the product. In design schools you learn basics, copy others and improve on successful stuff others made or make your version of something that was already made. In the real world, most designers take a screenshot import it to Figma make some changes so it's not so obvious and then "bem" a design.
    Plus the design shown does not look the same and it would have been ok to use in your app. How would you design a weather app? It will have a UV index with the same colours cuz it's a fricking uv index. Sunset and sunrise are in most apps the same. Like, if this video is about "Oh no AI designs the same thing a lot of other companies design if I input a generic prompt???! Oh no!" then wtf? AI is just repurposing work from other successful designs, somehow trying to come up with something. But y all expect something "creative" out of it? AI is shit and will be shit for the next couple of years. Now its only quality is in using instead of Google search, rephrasing sentences and generating somehow acceptable graphics.
    This video just confirmed why I don't like watching Theo. His videos are mostly without his unique perspective. It's just like he only reads the article.
    Sorry had to stop watching after 2mins.

      Often times I am too drunk to see that its theo and not primeagen and watch few minutes of the video, until I gladly go watch something else and pop another shot.
      If theo's video can get me to don't like it after 2 minutes that's something wrong with the format.
      If he is after those few minutes not just reading the article like a robot, and has some valid arguments maybe from his experience hit me up and I will give it a try on 2x speed.

    In terms of the "ripoff" dilemma of AI, I have the *least* qualms of an AI that steals from a Trillion Dollar Compay lol and I suspect that you'll get more diversity over time as it trained on more users (assuming people opting into that). Realistically, very few people would want to opt into the training so I don't know if that would pan out, but in theory, if you increase the dataset (like you say in the video) then you'll get better stuff.
    This makes me think of how almost everyone has a free Gmail account because they let Google "read" all of their emails for data farming. It's unlikely that Figma would pay you for training, but I can imagine a FREE Figma version with the training turned on. That would be kinda cool. (Before the replies come in, I pay for Hey email. I'm a bit of a privacy pessimist where I don't disagree with people who are unhappy about the data scraping, I simply recognize that we have already allowed it to happen for more than a decade.)

    I kinda both agree and not? The same layout isn't really a rip-off, it is? Doesn't apple even promote this with their design guidelines, so common elements would be in the same space, and thus familiar to users?
