I just purchased a Proxxon ‘like’ hot wire cutter from the UK for half the price. Haven’t had the chance to use it yet lol as the craft room is still in shambles.
I've used a $20 Hobby Lobby/Joann Fabrics handheld one for years just because I didn't know about the vast selection of tables out there (had only seen other handhelds by HWFF for much more and mixed reviews) and for THAT cheap it isn't the worst tool. For cutting perfect, smooth blocks for buildings, tiles, basically any straight lines or right angles it's not cut out for it (partly due to thickness of the wire and party due to being handheld) but for organic shapes like cliffs, rock faces, bases etc. it's surprisingly useful! Just got the Proxxon for Xmas though so my game is about to step up considerably!
I created my cutter with some scrap chipboards, bought 4 diameters of hotwire (wasn't sure which one would be the best) and I power it via programmable power supply (KORAD 3005D). Except of power supply, it costs next to nothing (like $5 at most).
You do not want to change the gauge of wire as that would change the resistance effecting the heat. You need to learn to avoid the things that cause breaks, most of which is user error. It does simply wear out over time and break even if you are using it properly, but that's not a huge deal as the machine comes with like 98' of wire, essentially a lifetime supply.
A love my proxxon, and I am glad I bought it, but i'd strongly recommend to anyone starting out who plans on doing a LOT of work on one of these, you might want to seriously considering building one from the start. It's a lot* cheaper, relatively easy, and can potentially offer superior operation such as larger cuts, and larger working area, for example. (worth considering depending on the type of work you'll be doing) If you plan on doing any serious crafting you will want to replace the rip fence for the proxxon as it is pretty garbage (super cheap and easy). You'll also prob need to use a washer to help stabilize the arm from underneath to square the wire up from side on - a common complaint among proxxon users. You'll also be wanting a bunch of jigs... Point being, you'll prob need to do a bit to get her working 100%... Consider building one in the first place... If you're a big user it's something you'll prob start considering in the long run... Casual users ignore... So don't get me wrong, I love mine and It's still worth the money, you'll be happy you did, but it's food for thought.
I bought the hobby lobby one om a whim because i was frustrated hand cutting things and ive been amazed. $35 and it cuts better than the foam factory shown in the video. Maybe i got lucky idk.
Hey, what specific Proxxon Cutter model do you use? The one on your RUclips channel links to what looks like a plastic model and very different than the one on your shows.
Hey fellow Canuck. I'm glad you made this video. I was going to buy the cheap one, then decided because of this video to go for the proxxon. Thanks. PS: I 'm sorry in my giddy haste I forgot to use your link to buy it...sorry man ! Thanks for all the videos, tips & tricks. Much appreciated ! Hails from Quebec City. Salut !
I unfortunately have the hot wire Foam Factory cutter. When I started watching the channel I got really into wanting to make some of these. Unfortunately going the cheap route I ordered one. Then, because I was watching all your videos in order, two episodes later you specifically point out which one not to get. Long and behold that is the one I already got. How do I just waited two more episodes before I ordered in I could have save myself the trouble. After only one use I was able to see all the things it could not do accurately. I am currently getting it for parts to build my own custom cutter. I consider it a learning experience.
You deserve more subs! I am so happy that I have watched this because I've been searching and I now know that I'm gonna get the proxon! Great work though!
Agreed on the cheap Hobby Lobby cutter. I got one before I got my proxxon. It worked for one project before the table melted from contacting the wire. The Lobby cutter was just wasted money.
It happened to me once. Acted strange for several minutes. The problem never returned so I wasn’t able to figure it out. Your wire may not be seated properly or you might have build of melted foam in the hole on the table causing resistance that is messing with the current.
@@BlackMagicCraftOfficial I think you're right. I just took the spool of wire off and rewrapped and threaded the wire down though the surface. There must have been a loose connection because now it is super charged lol
Just bought the proxxon, can’t wait for it to come in the mail 👍 I did however buy the extra roll of wire 😂 oops. I guess I should have watched this video first, oh well I’m sure it will come in handy for later use. Thanks for the video 👍
I plan on ordering the proxon table next month. I would love to get the accessories but its a bit costly to get them from over seas so they will have to wait. I plan on doing a lot more than terrain. I also make nice grave stones out of foam for Halloween. This years big project will be a crypt fog chiller. Terrain is also in my sights and I have over 3000 D&D minies to use I just need a local group to get back into play with.
The accessories are nice to have but not a necessity. I worked without them for over a year, you can get away with buying them later if you want to upgrade.
OK I ordered it this morning as well as a cutting mat and another item. I dont have the 1/2 in XPS here so I have to mill down the 1 inch stuff. I hope to have tiles sets by the end of the month.
I've gotten the proxxon, but i need some help with it. My wire broke while i was cutting. Some styrofoam has melted and is now stuck inside the hole where the wire should go. I can't get the wire to punch through it. Any help on how to fix this?
Nice! I ended up buying the Proxxon through your affiliate link a few weeks ago. NEED help though my proxxon doesn’t heat up like it use too. Any suggestions or advice?
I was glad you suggested a diy cutter as a better option than an inferior store bought one. I speak from experience when I say " save yer pennies til you can afford the better quality product..."
If you are capable a DIY cutter can actually get you the BEST tool as you can make a really high quality one with lots of features. But if you aren't comfortable building something like that (especially the electronic end of things) or you don't want to waste the time it's worth waiting until you can buy a good quality off the shelf on like the Proxxon.
I am looking to buy the proxxon soon. I have a question. If I buy a 3 inch thick 4X8 foot piece of foam, how big of square can I cut with the table size and the arm. I am hopping for at least 1x1 foot (Still 3 inches thick). Thanks in advance!
With the HWFF there is a additional wire that you can attach that heats the wire faster and hotter for faster cuts. It is still not the best out there, but not terrible.
Hello. I'm a bit late to the party i know, but, better late than never. I was wondering if you ever compared the 3d table from Foam factory. I see a lot of praises for it and it seem to be very different and better than the one you used in this comparaison.
Hi, I'm new to the craft and was looking at advancing from the knife to the wire cutter. When I was looking at the Proxxon on Amazon, there was another wire cutting tool made by Hercules. It looks like a very similar design, but has some added perks - a foot pedal control and a circular cutting tool. It also costs $30 less, and ships faster. Curious, have you or anyone in your network seen or used this tool? If so, is it the same quality as Proxxon? I don't think that it would be worth $130 to upgrade from Proxxon, but since I don't have ANY wire cutter it looks like a better deal. Assuming it isn't junk haha. (I also don't know if the older videos are really monitored on comments, but this was the most appropriate video I found to ask the question)
@@BlackMagicCraftOfficial Done! It arrived today, looks VERY similar to the Proxxon, which I watched an unboxing/setup video for. The foot pedal is really handy, highly recommend it. There are degree marks on the arm, but it was off by about a quarter of an inch - I used a square to make sure the wire was straight up and down. The fence seems better than the proxxon based on videos - there are three screws to hold tension --- angle, slot, and one to keep the metal bar from sliding. I will still likely get the guides from Shifting Lands, but that can be a future purchase. I don't have a lot of finesse yet to get the grid lines done on it, but WOW is this better than using a knife! So fast, really even :) Your channel absolutely rocks man, thanks for everything you've put on here - it's really getting the creative thoughts active. I'll watch something you're making, and my mind runs with the ideas on how to incorporate them into my games. Thank you :)
haha... I love the "fun things to do with all the extra time..." This is a great comparison and helped me make the right choice. Thanks for posting! :)
The Proxon is 20 watt, the Hotwire Foam Factory doesn't even mention what power the hot wire is. If it's 10 watt, or uses a different wire (easily replaced) you get differences that makes this an apples and pears comparison. Edit: both points are addressed in the video!
So I have to ask. The proxxon vs the Hercules tabletop styrofoam hot wire cutter which would be better? The Hercules can move the wire around a lot more and has a dial for temp and it's a good $30 bucks cheaper.
Bought the HWFF a few months ago, just tried it now on my vacation and it got warm for a few minutes then stopped working altogether. Just ordered the Proxxon after seeing this video and threw the foam factory in the trash.
Great video, I bought the Big HWFF table a few years back, with the adjustable power supply. It is pretty much garbage for doing any kind of precision cuts. Worst hobby purchase that I have made.
Terranscapes reviewed the more advanced HWFF table. People who want a 3rd party objective view of the HWFF advanced table should check that video review out.
Ive had the Proxxon for about a month and absolutely love it. I build 1/12 dioramas and it opens up so many doors. Did you ever get the foot pedal? I cant find any sure fire info saying it works with the foam cutter but Id be interested.
It’s got 98’ of wire, each time you break the wire it uses up about 10” of wire. Breaks shouldn’t occur very often once you get to know the tool. The included wire should last several years.
Okay, you have shown that the heavy duty Proxxon is the better alternative (and $150 including warranty and shipping and handling isn’t all that bad, really), but what about hot wire wands and hot wire hand sculpting tools? Do you have any of those for comparison?
Seems for me the Hotwire Foam Factory is not really hot. So there are alternatives to proxon. Relevant is to get a hotwire, that is hot enough. I don't know if the Hotwire Foam Factory can be fixed. I am using EPS and XPS for ages for rc planes. I always build my onw wire cutter. There are Foam Cutter with batteries, i would always prefer the ones with a power block and a power adjustment.
So my boyfriend bought me a proxxon table for xmas; since you praised it so much and I watch a lot of your videos. Obviously we didn't know it took a little bit of assembly. After looking at the wires under the table, I kind of freaked out as it seems to be a grounding cable. Is it safe to touch the top arm of the table? They don't explain anything with the proxxon table instructions of what the cables are for. I was a little concerned and wanted him to return it. Is it safe? Sorry if this is a silly question. I don't often deal with "power tools", and I was worried that we weren't putting it together right. I can't find a tutorial for set-up online.
The reason it's not mentioned is becuase it's not something to worry about. Touch the arm all you want while it's on. You can touch the wire to, just not for long. You won't electrocute yourself, but you can burn yourself on the actual wire if you touch it for a long time. That's about it. It's a very simple safe tool.
Thanks, felt a little more at ease since I know you use this tool quite a bit. Got it set up. Liking the results so far. Beats the good ol' knife( since we have already had to make a trip to the emergency room last year for cutting through foam with fresh blade) heh. Blood sweat and tears for the craft!
will the proxxon only cut xps or can it cut other types of foam as well? for example, I have a lot of foam packaging material left over from put-it-together-yourself furniture (like bookcases) that I've kept with the idea I could use that for scenary. Cutting it with a knife would not only be time consuming but also be messy with a lot of foam "dust". Was thinking of getting a hotwire cutter to rip it all down to manageable sized blocks/tiles
It will cut all types of styrofoam, both XPS (extruded polystyrene) and EPS (expanded polystyrene which is the white bubbly stuff). It's not suitable for other types of foam like EVE (the floor matt stuff).
Great video - any suggestions... I want to cut/dissect some resin/plastic good quality human skulls. (not the cheap Halloween ones) do you think the Proxxon would do the trick? What is the distance between the table and the arm? Want to make sure the skulls will fit in that space. Thanks
Hey bmc, I really got into your videos, and I’m trying to paint a terrain set for outdoors, you should make a video on that or suggest another crafter who can help with that specific spot
I like my proxxon a lot , however it seems like it wasn't really designed to be turned up all the way, if I turn my proxxon past 4ish the wire gets red hot and breaks. Would love to know what basic settings you use for your proxxon.
You adjust the temperature to the material you are cutting, and how thick it is. The thicker the material the higher the setting you want to use. Keep in mind the wire cools as it cuts, so a high temperature wont overheat the wire while you are cutting, but if you just leave it on at that temperature without cutting the wire will start to glow and overheat.
Hi, I've been using the Proxxon hot wire foam cutter and for some reason I'm getting these curved line across surfaces that are meant to be flat. Do you know what I'm doing wrong? Thanks in advance!
Hi Beatmetodeath, might be that the wire is too cold or you are pushing the foam too fast. the wire cools down a tiny bit when it cuts and reheats again and this might be why you get this wavy pattern. Reducing the speed or increasing the temperature should fix it.
Would it be worth it, for someone with electronics skills, to get the foam factory cutter and install a beefier power supply for better temps? - And still have the problem of that janky fence, I guess.
Why bother going that route? Just build the whole thing from scratch. If you’re comfortable with the electronics and can do basic carpentry you can build a killer cutter for cheap.
LOVE your videos. I want to get into making terrain and structures. I DEFINITELY wsnt the proxxon, but it's something I'm going to have to save up for. (The wife may not like plunking down that amount of xadh at onr time.) Anyway, I have a question: I'm impatientish and anticipate the saving up to be about a month, so is it better just to wait or, in the meantime get a habdheld hot wire cutter? I just picked up the olfa and a box of blades. Basically: wait for proxxon or start with hand-held? Thanks.
@@BlackMagicCraftOfficial maybe dumb question, but will the Proxx cut through glue? Like if I stacked 2 pieces of foam and glued them, like to get a little extra thickness, does it cut the glue? Does the glue mess up the wire? I'm pretty much talking pva glue.

Would there be a way to add a spring to the Proxons cutting wire? I know some cutters use a spring as it helps with the wire not breaking as much when it constantly heats and cools.

I created my cutter with some scrap chipboards, bought 4 diameters of hotwire (wasn't sure which one would be the best) and I power it via programmable power supply (KORAD 3005D). Except of power supply, it costs next to nothing (like $5 at most).
You state that the Proxon wire breaks frequently, do you know what guage that wire is? Could you purchase a size or two thicker wire?
You do not want to change the gauge of wire as that would change the resistance effecting the heat. You need to learn to avoid the things that cause breaks, most of which is user error. It does simply wear out over time and break even if you are using it properly, but that's not a huge deal as the machine comes with like 98' of wire, essentially a lifetime supply.
@@BlackMagicCraftOfficial Thanks!
Thank you, you convinced me. I can take the Proxxon and modify it...that's easy.
I was just going to mention the king of random hotwire video but you beat me to it.
I was about to buy the foam factory. Thank you so much for making this video. You've help me.
(worth considering depending on the type of work you'll be doing)
If you plan on doing any serious crafting you will want to replace the rip fence for the proxxon as it is pretty garbage (super cheap and easy).
Can you use the wire cutter for small wood pieces like craft sticks? or is it solely only for foam?
It’s just for foam.
Thank you for this vid. I can't wait to get my own Proxxon!
Hey, what specific Proxxon Cutter model do you use? The one on your RUclips channel links to what looks like a plastic model and very different than the one on your shows.
Just bought my proxxon through your link thanks for the inspiration
Enjoy1
I just got my Proxxon today super excited to use it.
Great video! I always thought that the Proxon was a great cutter and you've reinforced my opinion!! Thanks so much!!
Salut !
I realize that this was done many years ago, but any chance of comparing the Hercules hot wire table to the Proxxon?
I unfortunately have the hot wire Foam Factory cutter. When I started watching the channel I got really into wanting to make some of these. Unfortunately going the cheap route I ordered one. Then, because I was watching all your videos in order, two episodes later you specifically point out which one not to get. Long and behold that is the one I already got. How do I just waited two more episodes before I ordered in I could have save myself the trouble. After only one use I was able to see all the things it could not do accurately. I am currently getting it for parts to build my own custom cutter. I consider it a learning experience.
I'm sorry I didn't make this video sooner :(
You deserve more subs!
I finally bought a proxxon. And the fancy jig. Ramon noodles and hotwire sessions comin up!
link to jig?
ill definitely be buying a proxxon but by the time I have the extra funds i probably won't need on for the major of my crafts will have been made
Have you ever had an issue with an intermitted current running through your proxxon? Mine is cutting off half way through my cuts
I hope to have tiles sets by the end of the month.
and that's why i bought a proxxon after watchin yer videos. great comparison
I just saw that the proxxon has dropped to $110 us on amazon!
eBay at the moment has then for 107 us with free shipping!
How hot do you set the Proxxon normaly? I just got one but im unsure how high i should set it. Cutting 2 inch foam
I've gotten the proxxon, but i need some help with it. My wire broke while i was cutting. Some styrofoam has melted and is now stuck inside the hole where the wire should go. I can't get the wire to punch through it. Any help on how to fix this?
A few drops of acetone or nail polish remover will dissolve the foam clogging the hole.
Oh, i'll try that tonight. Thanks for the tip!
Nice! I ended up buying the Proxxon through your affiliate link a few weeks ago. NEED help though my proxxon doesn’t heat up like it use too. Any suggestions or advice?
I didn't fart around and went right for the Proxxon. thanks again man.
@@BlackMagicCraftOfficial yessir I agree
Can you demonstrate doing a circle cut? I need (or would prefer) to do a cylinder with 4" diameter and 4" deep. Can the Proxxon handle that? Thanks.
ruclips.net/video/tMj8xx2s79w/видео.html
Proxxon can cut through 4” foam easily.
Yea I discovered that after making the video. Wish I knew before as it may make the hwff usable.
I haven’t tried the Hercules myself, but it appears to be a straight clone and is likely just as good.
@@BlackMagicCraftOfficial thank you sir!
If you end up ordering it, here is a channel affiliate link to use :D amzn.to/3b9Cddk
So fast, really even :)
Your channel absolutely rocks man, thanks for everything you've put on here - it's really getting the creative thoughts active. I'll watch something you're making, and my mind runs with the ideas on how to incorporate them into my games. Thank you :)
haha... I love the "fun things to do with all the extra time..." This is a great comparison and helped me make the right choice. Thanks for posting! :)
The cheaper alternative is making your own with a dimmer switch, 2-amp 12-volt power supply, and nichrome wire. It's not rocket science.
The Proxon is 20 watt, the Hotwire Foam Factory doesn't even mention what power the hot wire is. If it's 10 watt, or uses a different wire (easily replaced) you get differences that makes this an apples and pears comparison.
Edit: both points are addressed in the video!
Just got my proxon. I wish they had made a rail guid on the top
Bought the proxxon and guider pro 2.0 tool due to your videos. great stuff man!
I hope you are catching up with the new blue ray release of Twin Peaks. lots of great extras!
Hello Not sure if this was mentioned here...As far as the replacement wires for the Proxxon table do you use the Proxxon brand wire or another one?
So I have to ask. The proxxon vs the Hercules tabletop styrofoam hot wire cutter which would be better? The Hercules can move the wire around a lot more and has a dial for temp and it's a good $30 bucks cheaper.
I made it to 2:40. No comparison. Hobby or not I’d have to break out the table saw and dust mask before that thing. Mean green wins again.
Bought the HWFF a few months ago, just tried it now on my vacation and it got warm for a few minutes then stopped working altogether. Just ordered the Proxxon after seeing this video and threw the foam factory in the trash.
Sorry you didn’t see this first.
Great video, I bought the Big HWFF table a few years back, with the adjustable power supply. It is pretty much garbage for doing any kind of precision cuts. Worst hobby purchase that I have made.
And that version isn’t cheap either....good to know.
Terranscapes reviewed the more advanced HWFF table. People who want a 3rd party objective view of the HWFF advanced table should check that video review out.
I’ll look that up and put it in the video info.
Very cool of you, and just one of the reasons I enjoy your channel. You seem like a good guy.
See my replies to your other comments, this video was sincerely made to help inform people’s purchases.
Hi i would like to ask is it possible to cut out from a foam board with dimensions like 60x120 cm an board with 40x30 cm ? thank you
Ive had the Proxxon for about a month and absolutely love it. I build 1/12 dioramas and it opens up so many doors.
Did you ever get the foot pedal? I cant find any sure fire info saying it works with the foam cutter but Id be interested.
It works for me - but I got the EU plug version so it fitted the foot pedal.
Do you think that the proxxon would be suitable for cutting thin sheet plastic or is it just for foam/styrene?
It’s only meant to cut styrofoam
This may have been asked before, but... How long does the cutting wire last on the Proxxon?
It’s got 98’ of wire, each time you break the wire it uses up about 10” of wire. Breaks shouldn’t occur very often once you get to know the tool. The included wire should last several years.
Okay, you have shown that the heavy duty Proxxon is the better alternative (and $150 including warranty and shipping and handling isn’t all that bad, really), but what about hot wire wands and hot wire hand sculpting tools? Do you have any of those for comparison?
I already did a video comparing my thoughts on handhelds from the two companies.
Very much needed info for me, aswell as xps foam tutorial, thanks!
What's he using to guide the Foam through at 3:14? I'm having trouble with the guide it comes with, and am looking to replace it.
Great video - any suggestions... I want to cut/dissect some resin/plastic good quality human skulls. (not the cheap Halloween ones) do you think the Proxxon would do the trick? What is the distance between the table and the arm? Want to make sure the skulls will fit in that space. Thanks
A Hotwire only cuts styrofoam. Won’t do a thing to resin.
@@BlackMagicCraftOfficial how about plastic?
…..“A Hotwire only cuts styrofoam”
Hey bmc, I really got into your videos, and I’m trying to paint a terrain set for outdoors, you should make a video on that or suggest another crafter who can help with that specific spot
The hobby lobby wire cutter isn't a horrible one if you use it to just start off with. But I will say there is alot I can not do with it though.
Another point.... I don't believe Gerard makes accessories for the foam factory cutter
I mention that later in the video :)
Black Magic Craft I'm at work, have to re-watch it when I get home
Does the Proxxon Hotwire table require the power supply like the other Proxxon products?
Nope, it has a dedicated psu and plug built in.
Thanks! I was unsure, but I actually thought it didn't require it. Thanks again!
holt shit I had the whole video sped up to 1.5 X the speed and was struggling thru the comparison. What a huge difference.
Hi, I've been using the Proxxon hot wire foam cutter and for some reason I'm getting these curved line across surfaces that are meant to be flat. Do you know what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks in advance!
Hi Beatmetodeath,
might be that the wire is too cold or you are pushing the foam too fast. the wire cools down a tiny bit when it cuts and reheats again and this might be why you get this wavy pattern.
Reducing the speed or increasing the temperature should fix it.
First of all, many congratulations on the channel, it's amazing !! 😉 ... later, I wonder if this machine can cut EVA foam ...
Thank you
Hotwire tools aren’t very good for eva unfortunately. A blade is better.
@@BlackMagicCraftOfficial Too bad, I thought it was the ideal !! ... I wanted to make small letters, what kind of foam would you advise?
thank you
Will this be able to cut eva foam?
Hotwire cutters don't work very well on eva foam. You are better off with blades.
Is the HWFF adjustable in temp? cuz that looks to me like the Proxxon was hotter. A different wire could mitigate that, somewhat.
No, it’s not. That’s the problem. The most important part of the Proxxon is that it DOES have temp adjustment.
Thanks for doing the video. Great information.
Thank you for the lesson....purchased one today and anxious to swerly around myself some Styrofoam
Thanks.
Just wait. Use the blade. Handhelds perform a different task and aren’t really a substitute for a table.
Mr. BMC, Sir, I went to your site, to the items list and picked out I THINK 3 things from your affiliate page, INCLUDING the PROXXON.
The orher items were mid podge (I have some, but the new onebis for making black podge, wire brushes for wood-graining, the epoxy resin and the Proxx. I'll get it all tomorrow, except the Proxxon. That's due between next weds-following Monday.
Thanks for the vids.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Just bought one! haven't got it yet
Would there be a way to add a spring to the Proxons cutting wire? I know some cutters use a spring as it helps with the wire not breaking as much when it constantly heats and cools.
I’m not sure you’d want that as you want the wire tight and under tension so it doesn’t flex.
I want to buy a Proxon but I also want to make this oneand see how it stacks up. It has interesting features like being able to freehand with it also use 6 or 12 volt battery supply and use it when perhaps house electrical isn't available. ruclips.net/video/N2n_EbRzZ0g/видео.html
Maybe stupid question. Can the proxxon cut through foam core of does the coating prevent it?
You need to take the paper off. It only cuts foam.
Ok. Thank you
