    Not $129 anymore..! I just bought one, they're $149 now, 2/11/2023. Thanks for the review. It helped a little. I basically had already up my mind because of the advantage of a Scintillator over a Mueller tube.

    As a Uranium glass (Vaseline glass) collector, I love the idea of using a geiger counter to test my glassware and to see if there is a compounded effect from the glass being in close proximity as a group.

    Good video and basic information on dosimeters. Half-life varies great depending on the source. Xray for instance has no half-life, because it's part of the electromagnetic spectrum as is gamma. Particle radiation is different and has a half-life. Medical doses such Idoine 131 usually have a short half-life., from a couple of hours up to two weeks. Radium has a half-life of 1620 years and is a possible by product NF . NOW if you are using a dosimeter during a possible event the dose you need to worry about is LD 50/30 dose. Where 50% of the population is adversely affected in 30 days = minimum 500 rads whole body exposure.
    Always impressed the content on this channel. Thanks for sharing.

    I was lucky enough to still have an old Coleman lantern with spare mantles. They are good for testing the detectors. I heard the newer ones are made without Thorium, and are not radioactive, but I have not verified this. Need to take my detector into a sporting goods store to confirm.

    Nice unit. Don't forget iodine tablets as part of your radiological protection kit.

    • @aaronm9478
      @aaronm9478 2 года назад +3

      FYI: Iodine is only needed/useful in a radioactive fallout situation, where radioactive dust is in the air and you are likely to be out in it unprotected. It does NOT protect you from radiation exposure or reduce your absorption rate. Only shielding will protect you from radiation exposure.

    • @MochaZilla
      @MochaZilla Год назад +3

      @@aaronm9478 i would argue that, due to our higher daily exposure to radiation being higher than ever in human history, that we should be increasing our daily intake of iodine. Not to mention that a lot of people have excess fluoride exposure which further decreases iodine in the body.

  • @MoltenHelium
    @MoltenHelium Год назад +3

    Good review. Some issues though, generally don’t leave in your car in most cases… that fallout is unpredictable stay put for the first couple of days. much better off in most instances staying in place and sealing off openings to the outside. KI pills don’t protect against all radiation only iodine radiation. Which in most cases is very low in nuclear warhead blasts. While not completely useless, the majority of the time they won’t help. Be prepared but be smart. Especially in todays global situation.

    Thanks for this! Since Fukushima we sadly quit all ocean source fish and seaweeds & using mostly mined salts like Himalayan figuring the radiation levels will be highest from those food sources even though we rarely ate ocean fish due to knowledge of the sewer the ocean is now. Fresh water fish we limit too for similar reasons but we do miss ocean foods! PS: The Geiger counters that identify which radioactive elements & quantity ie: Plutonium, Uranium, Cesium etc. are more expensive🤦‍♀️

      Just a small not to keep in mind: the ocean has been one of the highest source of uranium element for millions of years as particles of uranium is mixed with the ocean due to the erosion of land mass, and well, since 37% of the matter on the earth is uranium, you get the picture. The Fukushima accident released a matter of 0.0000001% more radioactive material in terms of cesium-137 and ever lower amounts of strontium-90...
      You'll get cancer from chemicals in your everyday consumptions much more than from radioactive materials.

    I don't own one, seems like a good performer, tough and with a scintillator detector a nice upgrade on my opinion compared to GM detectors. However I don't like the tiny luminous screen and switches, makes it look like just another Arduino based detector put together but in a custom case and the switches might facilitate water ingress from a splash or even some rain droplets, the OLED screens have limited lifetime due water vapor diffusion and light exposure. I would love something like the radiacode 102 but with a tough gammascout like case.

      I have both....For an extra $100ish (with shipping and handling and taxes) I would definitely go with the radiacode 102, seeing how it can tell you exactly what type of radiation it is detecting and the app (for Android, ios still in the works) has a mapping feature so you can map out hotspots.
