Mr. Chapman. After many months of research on options fo both an ENG and creative tool, I've landed on the PMW200. The decision was based very largely on your valuable informative videos and information. Thank you.
At last Sony is moving back to its much better hand held design, away from that awful rotating grip! The old HDR-Z1 was the best balanced hand held camera ever! Thank you for using that design again! $7K+ is a little steep. I think if they charged $5K they'd probably make more money by the sheer number they'd sell!
Not sure I fully understand the question. Reducing the detail level will reduce the appearance of noise on an EX1/EX3 a little, but all these small sensor HD cameras exhibit some noise.
It is a new DSP. The reason there is no 60p is because there is no provision for 60p in the XDCAM codec and recording system. This camera is aimed at broadcasters and broadcast productions where there is little demand for 60p.
This was my dream camera back then. The only drawback was that when shooting at a frame rate of 50 it was limited to 1080i or 720p (it can't do full HD at 50p). The PXW-X200 seems to have delivered on that front thankfully, though it's difficult to find one nowadays. The next in the line, the Z280, is too expensive for me atm.
The SxS door on the pre-production camera is silver for some reason. I expect it will be black on the production units. Menu is pretty much the same as the EX1R, just a few small changes here and there.
Hi all Please note SONY PMW 200 has three basic manufacturing Faults 1.LCD screen is uneven lit and flickers at all corners try to see in subdued light when touched and rotate LCD flickers sw off character display to see .2.Camera cannot do white balance more then 10000 Color temp see manual Color temp setting.3.camera leaks light on censor via top vents and show green flash all over screen SOON MY VIDEO will be uploaded
The memory card options are the fatal flaw for this otherwise fantastic camcorder. Even 'the cheaper' XQD cards are enormously overpriced compared to other storage mediums and they are very scarce. Lose a card or have a malfunction outside of a major city.....tough. Workhorse camcorders should all be either SD or Compact Flash compatible, with the exception of cams using codec formats that exceed read/write bandwidth limitations (i.e. Raw 4K) of the aforementioned storage mediums.
Hello Alister, thx for the sharp timing of your review. It seems clear if Sony had updated the DSP they would speak about it. And if they had a new 1/2 sensor generation, they would talk about it. Seems they've somewhat tweaked the noise reduction system or so... And one the of the things you still can't get out of the nice lovely beast is the 1080 60p... as a consequence of keeping the old gen DSP... So if real, this might mean this cam is not excatly the "next gen" of the EX1, but a nice sis.
Bought the camera. LOVE it and I shoot in factory settings. If I go to the higher quality settings then it is sensitive to movement. You do very good reviews. You are my go to guy.HAHA Retired Firemen Mike
Ingenioustv, ive a question. I will buy the PMW-300K1, its the same form factor or very similar. I will do a tv show full chroma keyed. Did you have some kind of preset on the camera to bring out a nice key? Thanks in advance!
Roger, give Neat Video Plug in a try. I got some noisy images produced with my panasonic 171 and that plug in made some real amazing adjustment. it costs 99$ but it's worth every penny!
Agreed. I often think Sony charge just that too much i.e. min of $/€1,000. A pity as you say they would likely sell more at the lower price and ultimately make more profit. Some manufacturers are just so short-sighted!
Hope to see comparing between this and the newer PXW-X200. PMW200 seem to be more impressive although it is older generation. Not sure if it's the PXW-X200 17x lens gain more reach but lost more image quality?
I never really took to the PMW-200. We bought one to run alongside our PMW-320's but could never really got the color reproduction or clarity of the 320's. Lesson learned.

Very nice camera! It's about time we see another 3 - 1/2" sensors camera and with 50Mb/s 422. They do need to add 1080p slow mo not just 720.
Great review!
Sony should just hire you for all of their professional camcorder reviews.

Excellent review!
Is 1080p60 fps also possible in this camera?
Seems like a nice camera. If I could afford it, I'd get it for broadcast work, but the only con seems to be the small size of the control buttons.

Brilliant review, Be good to see its rivals and a comparison.

Beautiful photography I do not understand why Sony does not produce a video camera with CCD sensor
Hi Allister, do u know some way to reduce the grain that it comes from fabric settings???
I am just going crazy about the amount of grain.
Really helpful review! It made me know how to use the Picture Profile! Perfect!
Hello Alister, I have a question. Why the PMW-200 has no Shot Transition function and S&Q-Button like the EX1R. Thank you for your time!

The X200 also offers you 1080/60p which is important for some.

I owe Z1U and love it I won't get one for years. If you know how to use it property in manual mode cheers :) Nice video
You can also use cheaper XQD cards.
