    I’ve been converted to western riding thanks to a NHM backing my horse. I Evented all my life and closed my eyes to different methods. Now they have been opened. So much kinder and natural to the Horse

      Dale Fredricks I have never been able to find a video that explained riding with your body so well. I will definitely be sharing this one with the kids in the group as many of them are still depending on the bit alone to communicate with their horses. Thank you for this. It will be a big help to the next generation of horsemen.

      You're welcome Becky; and thanks for sharing with the kids! Our hope in making these videos is to help others and it's nice to hear that they're being used (the videos).

    Great Video Dale, be really great if you could do a video blog with a horse your starting and show each stage as a episode, then we can see what might go wrong and how you fix it.

      That's a great idea Ehjaz, but I doubt if I'll be starting any more colts. Any videos we make in the future will pobably be with our own horses- Shorty and Grady Puffin. Glad you like the video

    I have a question about the backing, do you always back every time you stop? Does the horse start to anticipate that? Like if you want an actual stop, but they start backing instead?

    • @dalefredricks6546
      @dalefredricks6546  2 месяца назад +1

      No, it's not necessary to back every time you stop and yes they can start anticipating. It's easy enough to fix though- just push them ahead if they start to back up on their own and stop backing them after every stop for a while.

    I have a question: When I got my mare, she was being ridden heavily off her face and still doesn't understand leg pressure that well. Do you think it would be possible to retrain her with body cues? Any recommendations for that?

    Do you have any tips to slow down a horses canter... my horse just wants to go and if i shorten the reins he slows down but as soon as i release he starts to go faster again...

    • @dalefredricks6546
      @dalefredricks6546  7 лет назад +3

      There are many different things you can do. One thing you can work on is walk, trot, canter, and then slow down to a trot, then a walk, and do the same sequence over again. When you canter just do one cirle and then slow down to a trot, then a walk. You can even stop after the walk and back up. Then do your walk, trot, canter again. Try this for a week or so and see if it helps.

    Hey Dale, I have an unbroke Gelding who is approximately 6 years old and VERY stubborn, and I can't make him move when I kick or squeeze his sides with my legs while riding, is there anything you know to fix this?

    • @dalefredricks6546
      @dalefredricks6546  7 лет назад +1

      Hi Tyler- When I'm teaching a horse to respond to my legs, I'll squeeze lightly with my legs and then tap him on the croup with my dressage whip. If he doesn't respond, I'll tap him harder and harder until he does respond and then I'll quit squeezing with my legs. I'ts important to quit squeezing every time he responds. With repitition he should learn to stay at that same gait or speed until you signal him to do something different. Hope this helps

    i am thinking about buying a beautiful mare and i want to show her western, but her trot is really fast. i want to show at some pretty advanced places, and i need a trot thats almost a walk, but i cant get that from her. i have really improved her from how she was at first, but its still not a show worthy trot. she also does not respect when i ask her to stop or slow with my body...
