My first MB was a 1967 200D, which eventually went 863,000 miles until it was broadsided by a Mack truck, Driver's door opened nicely once I got over the shock of the incident.
You are right about the old Merc quality, I pulled an '83 230e (W123) out of a barn where it had sat for 20 years and the interior was still fresh, it didn’t start as the electrics were vandalised but it cranked over happily...it will run soon!
NYGJMAP I was given my first car at 16 as well, it was a 1961 Chevrolet Corvette. It had the 283 power pack engine with two four barrels, a 4-speed transmission and a 4.11 positraction rear end. It was rated at 270 hp and was scary fast. So I can identify with Hoovie. Now at 71+ years old I still have cars of note. My 1999 Mercedes Benz ML320 has 314,500 miles on it and is still going strong. The leather interior doesn’t look like a 300K plus vehicle. No rips, tears or worn bolsters. Mine even has the fold-up third row seating making it a 6 passenger (not 7) vehicle. The middle seat in the middle row of seats is only for munchkins not an adult. The running gear is all original and bulletproof. I compare it to my first BMW, an 1989 525i. I drove that car for 500,089 miles and sold it to a neighbor of mine for his daughter. It now has over 1,000,000 miles and is still going strong and is still on the original drivetrain. Oh yes, my current other vehicles are a 2002 Audi A4 3.0 Quattro with only 143,000 miles and a 2005 Volvo S80 Premier with every available option including a refrigerator behind the rear center armrest and the T6 twin turbo twin cam six. It only has 153,000 miles. Yes, high end German and Swedish cars are well worth it as I see it.
I had a 96’ E 320. I had 70k miles on it at the time of my purchase. That Car turned out to be the best car I ever had. The thing would squat down on the interstate with its inline V-6 and take off like it was a V-8, no exaggeration. Then one day I was riding with an old friend in his suv when he lost it and purposely wrecked doing 120 mph in his 04 Lincoln Navigator. Weed flipped 20 times and my spine was broken in 2 places. So I was no longer able to keep my E 320 up and could not work anymore so the car started to go down. After 7 years of owning the Mercedes, I sold it on Craigslist. Nothing but memories now of the luxurious, fast ass tank. Anyway, your video brought back some good memories of that car. I like what your doing on your channel man. Very interesting. It reminds me of me lol. I subbed to you bro. Keep up the great work. ✌️
Commenters like this are sad. They sprout complete BS and will get likes even if it's a lie. Then ignore the ones who point out their lies in the comments.
*Old merries are not reliable?!* Maybe in the States (because of Scotty Kilmer) people are thinking that Mercedes-Benz makes bad cars. But the Mercedes built from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s are most of the time bulletproof! A lot of W126 and W123 mercedes drive still around in Eastern europe and Africa with high mileage and they get very little or no maintenance. Specially the 200, 220 or 300 diesels drive with no problems 400.000 miles. So people that's why old Mercedes never die!
Mercedes stop being reliable by about the mid-90s when their parent company Daimler was on the verge of bankruptcy because Mercedes was hemorrhaging money. The only reason this brand still exists is because they did that predatory merger with Chrysler who is making Bookoo bucks because of the cheap to make LH Cloud cars
The one car that I had to send to the dealership 5 times within the first 50 000 km due to broken shit was a Mercedes. Don't get me started on how that shit almost killed my ass on the highway when it suddenly turned the engine off at night for no reason.
I have owned a 2004 w203 c180 Kompressor from new. with 330000 km (205000miles)... it still runs like a dream. Other than servicing and all the regular stuff that needs replacing, all I’ve had to replace was a fuel line and vacuum pump. Oh and the battery. Yup. They’re amazing cars.
See I feel like the c230k was a hit or miss. I had the same car and i had so many issues. Wiper, arm popped off (literally broke), electronic issues. Now I have a 1995 e300d and it has fair share of ordeals but its not like the my old c230k
My 1999 C230 K has 162,000 miles. I replaced the mass airflow sensor, alternator, new battery, air filter, and detailed it inside and out. I occasionally put 100% VP race fuel in it when I feel like spoiling it. You have a deep passion for cars and the ability to see and express quality like no other person. I love this video. Hope your doing well, stay awesome.
This is a well made Mercedes during some of their highest quality years of production. I’m also driving a C Class that just won’t die, it’s made for some great content and road trips though lol. Thanks for sharing this, this was the first car I ever test drove when I was 16 and it brought back memories
My first nice car was a 1981 280CE. I bought it with 115,000 miles on it. I loved it. My boss who had a 280SEL 4.5 introduced me to his mechanic, and I have to say that we stayed on a first name basis for the 4 years I owned it. It spent at least a day in his shop every month. In the last year, the rear end started to make a horrendous whine, and then the vacuum system developed a leak, causing my driver's side door not to unlock after the car had been sitting for more than a few hours. It may be that the reason these cars last forever is that people are willing to put in the money and effort needed to make that claim come true, but my mechanic scared me with his talk of what it might cost to track down that leak and replace the rear end, so I gave up and I traded it in for a Lexus. And although the Lexus was the most boring car I've ever owned, I'm pretty sure it really WOULD have lasted forever.
Don’t need to watch the video, old Merc’s last longer because Mercedes wanted to build great cars back then. As to bowel MVMT watches, they were overpriced for what you pay from the beginning, and still are. Want a GOOD quality affordable price? Try Timex, Orient or Seiko. Ask anyone who isn’t being paid to push this junk!🤮
A lot of company fucked up right now. For example Toyota had beautiful cars before, right now stupid same cars. Mercedes ... I’m big fan of 1990-2005 Mercedes. My new achievement will be cl500.
I have one of these today. It was a really really reliable car. I have got 200,000 Miles on it, and it still runs smooth! Btw mine is a “98” and it is a great reliable vehicle. I’d rather own one of these than a Chevy SS.
I am from germany, and have driven in dozens of mercedes from the 70s and 80s that are taxi cabs with well over 1.000.000 miles. Some are going on 2.000.000 miles. With very little trouble. I have 63 cars mostly mercedes and porsche. Several V12s no problemes but they never never ever have been driven in snow or rain. So no salt no problems like showroom new. The newer mercedes seam to have a lot more issues and less reliable. My good friend is a district man for 35 years he let me know which cars to stay away from. My favorite 2 cars. 1992 500E 6500 miles. Like new. My 1999 CL600 3100 miles. The 97 and 98 CL600 had too many problems, my friend told me. Thanks.....
Cars (and things in general) were built to last back in the day. This being a testament to their superior build quality. Now companies actually build things so they brake, on purpose. So they can sell more parts. It's really that simple. Sad, but true.
Mercedes in the 80's had just as many defects as anyone else as they came off the line. They just had a huge rework department to sort them out before sale and thus increase their price.
Would you buy a car that makes 8 mpg? Would you buy a car that does 0 to 60 in 11 seconds? Would you buy a car that weighs 2 tonnes but is a sedan? Probably not? Well guess what, part of the reason modern cars break down is because they all have stuff that cars 25 years ago just would not dream about having! Turbocharger on pretty much any gas engine from BMW, valvetronic, vanos, lane assist, x-drive, all that shit is why these modern 50 000 dollar cars sell in the first place. It is not like they build them so they break down, the complexity of the product just takes its toll on the reliability. And then there's all these regulations due to pollution that thank god are in place because guess what cities 40 years ago would smell like ass.
Tow Hee I drive a car that gets 8mpg and weighs 2 tons 😂😂😂 but it's a Lincoln navigator lmao . But also cars back then we're not that heavy even though they looked huge. Newer cars are actually way heavyier due to saftey standards and all the electrinics
Well... Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪 My neighbors own a old mercedes, with about 75 hp and hand cranked windows. Build in the late ˋ80s ... Over 500.000 kilometers on the clock and still running...😜 I mean this car looks like a fortress and the family is NEVER goin to sell it...💪 ... I think you touched some of the issues but since the age of modern electronic, things got more comfortable, but also more complicated. That, I think, is the appeal of relatively old cars... they are simple...👌
Of the eleven German cars I’ve owned my 95 C280 was the best. Bad wiring harness aside it really was indestructible. Last I heard it was still on the road in 2018. And probably without one squeak or rattle.
I had a 1996 S420, I had spent 2 months getting it to showroom condition. It was beautiful and had 67,000 miles. I made the mistake of letting my wife drive it. Hit a cable barrier at 70 mph. I cried, it was totalled.
Any car with a good enthusiast base can live forever, it's just a matter of wanting to keep the car on the road. I have two BMW's with over 200k miles on each of them, and I'll keep dumping money into them to fix them because I like them so much.
footballcoreano finally someone said it I’ve had 2 Honda’s that constantly had maintenance issues, bought a bmw around 2 and a half years ago and have had no issues what so ever
@@realone2917 Oh wow his anecdotal claim matches your anecdotal claim. Must be true. If we lived by that logic humanity would be extinct. Long term statistics don't lie. dashboard-light.com/reports/BMW.html
I just came here to say I rented a 300E in Germany some years ago when I was in the Army. It was the last in the lot when I got there and I needed it so I rented it. It's check engine light was on when I got in but I just drove it anyway. It ran like a champ. About 700 miles that weekend going over 100 mph most of the time. On the last day I said let me check the oil, this light is bothering me. Dipstick was bone dry. I drive it like a mad man and no smoke, no engine issues. Nothing. I gained a lot of respect for the MB engine that day.
Don't let this distract you from the the fact that in 1966, Al Bundy scored four touchdowns in a single game while playing for the Polk High School Panthers in the 1966 city championship game versus Andrew Johnson High School, including the game-winning touchdown in the final seconds against his old nemesis, Bubba "Spare Tire" Dixon.
Only just seen this video. I got a 1995 C280 2.8 with M104 engine. Here in the UK we have the MOT test, which the car needs to pass every year to check if its roadworthy. In the 9 years I've owned it, it's passed the test first time every time. I won't be selling anytime soon..
Dope episode man! I love BENZOS myself since my first car was a 1986 190E-2.3 back in 1998. I think all Mercedes from the 70,80 and 90’s are very well built.
1995/96 Mercedes and below usually run forever. The maintenance is super cheap, especially for Diesel Models. I'd say where they are probably expensive are when it comes to interior replacement/upholstery. My interior is ok but may want change interior out, I don't care for the grey. going to be expensive on most cars probably. 92 300D - Fan belt & tensioner for my accessory belt was like under $60 to do yourself. - The car has over 360K, check trans fluid and was still good and pink color. - I did power steering fluid flush myself as steering wheel whined a bit, $5-16? I think i bought recommend stuff & filter, 1 year later and PS quiet without issues. - Oil change $27-34 because motor holds 8 quarts of oil - but I go 8,000-9,000 miles before changing due to no oil burn or loss. - Starter started getting weak $60 part + $40 Labor Remy/Bosch Rebuilt with life time warranty after $50 core charge. (I didn't have time to do job myself) - $15 Differential Oil Change (They didn't really charge me anything) - Full Suspension rebuild was $250-300 but I was dumb and wanted to lower it. so it was $600 in parts (It's not bad after lowering but I just noticed the ride is actually better if I just cut the stock mercedes springs carefully, I had no idea..) - I put in a Sony Head unit with Amplified Sub behind my seat and replaced door speakers for $240 - $150 labor to wire it. (Has speaker phone, bluetooth, NFC and all that) Next thing to do is performance upgrades, clean out carbon build up and have a specialist give advice, order upgraded turbo/or pump. Later change it over the Manual transmission. Diesel Trans are dogs on these cars but tough. Everything is good on it, I love the car. put over 13K miles. I avg 28-33MPG Gas Price Equivalent, If i go by Diesel prices, it's like 36MPG in summer. It's my work vehicle but you can't tell by looking at it, I carry tons of parts in it and it's invisible to the radar. has about 20% more room than my 93 Camry I previously owned, and obviously like 3x or 4x more than my 95 Honda VX Hatch. Everything kept falling apart on my Honda/Toyota lol. If i found a wagon version I'd have even more room, but those are impossible to fine with the 5Cyl Turbo Diesel Motor.
Hoovie, I'm scared that I'm going to become like you one day. I'm 17 years old and I have already bought 4 cars (I'm not rich and I haven't wrecked any of them.) First, a Jetta, next, a PT Cruiser. Both reliable & sensible cars. Then I bought a $500 Neon with 39k miles that still ran, and now: a 1994 Mercedes-Benz S500 with 214k miles. It still runs amazingly well and most of the electronics still work. Old Mercedes really do live long lives.
We have a 2006 Mercedes R-350 4-matic. 122k and it still drives great no rattles and when you get in the quality is there. The fit finish still holds up. We take pretty care of it and it is almost like new, still.
Scotty is more of any old school mech, likes the simplicity of carburetors or American "Muscle Cars" that really didn't have that much muscle. Like the C4 Corvettes that at best had 230 HP. LMAO
That is so true. I still have my 2006 C280 that looks new and drives better. I've had it for 11 years and only do oil changes and one set of tires. I paid only 10k for it all those years ago and don't regret it for one second. Love you grandmother give you her car. That's a keeper. Love the old shows Tyler proud of your work. Semper Fi. Neal
I love my W202 . I have a 2000 c230 kompressor and love it . It has 130 k miles on it now but had 110k on it when I got it . Its a fantastic reliable and fun to drive car.
I have a 1992 w201 190D 2.5 and its the best car i ever owned, yes i fix it because when i brought it, i was looking for a keeper, and something i can work on,and run on vegie oil if it ever had to,it loves long trips and good on fuel, parts are sort of cheap and available, just put new nozzles in the injectors and man its smoother now,and put new blistien shocks all round, these are the things you do to a keeper
Dude!!! You had to buy one of those! I have always loved the C and E Class Mercedes cars of the 90’s. Still elegant, classy, and amazing cars to drive. I do remember my old E-Class having that leather smell you spoke of in the video. I do hope you keep the car as well. It really does deserve a cool owner like yourself. Or me of course. ;)
I know what you mean about older Mercedes. I drive a 2007 MB E350 Estate Wagon, with only 78+k miles. It rides beautifully and is a lot more comfortable than my wife's much newer SUV (not a MB)/. I plan on keeping it until I hit the lottery...and then buy a NEW AMG E63 station wagon.
We have a 1988 Mercedes 300SE and absolutely love it It’s a resurrection from low use car Just so simple to work on once you understand it Parts are relatively easy to get and not too pricey Took ours for its maiden voyage last week Lots more to do but it will be a family heirloom as my son is to get it and truely wants it when I’m gone
The 1990's Mercedes lineup was one of the best ever, by any automaker. The 1991 S-Class. the SL500, the 500E, and C36 are prime examples of when they built the best cars in the world.
Agreed. Then the people at the financial department told the engineers to build the cars at less cost, and Mercedes went to be at the same level as VW and so on. but they are still there, and making money. I keep holding on to my 124 300 diesel '95, feel no temptation for the newer models. Naturally it would be nice with the stronger newer engines, but all the extra electronics and equipment I'm not interested in
Not unheard of as a dealer. I'm not a dealer but flip a few cars a year and have owned at least 20 German cars over the years. Not counting other cars, trucks, and motorcycles I have owned too. It's hard for me to own any car for very long because I get bored and want to have a new experience. Guess that's why I never got married lol I would get bored with the same woman all the time.... ;)
Jase Poag well if you notice he mentioned that the government mandated that all wiring looms be biodegradable. Meaning that if they wanted to be able to sell their cars in possibly one of their largest markets they needed to design these harnesses to begin to break down after a certain time frame. The issue seems to be that they overestimated the longevity of the material they used
Jase Poag biodegradable and 'designed to break down' are not same thing. Wood is biodegradable, does this mean that every piece of wooden furniture sold is 'designed to break down'? Biodegradable in this context means that if you take a brand new wiring harness and bury it, it would disintegrate in the soil without leaving harmful chemicals through decomposition. Or if you burn it , it would not create harmful chemicals through the process. This has nothing to do with "breaking apart after a period of time".
Your 1995 C-class (W202 series) isn't an "old Mercedes", and especially not one of those which arguably "don't die". It's more likely to be considered the beginning of the end of that saying, 'cause the build quality and durability were lacking compared to older standards of the 60s, 70s and 80s. The high-mileage heroes of Mercedes' line-up are the /8 (stroke 8), W123, W190 and W124 series. Especially the immensely underwhelmed (5 and 6 cylinder) diesel engines, with their huge displacement in relation to the low power output (= minimal wear), run forever, 'cause those engines don't break a sweat at what little is demanded of them.
Mine is 2000 4 cylinder c230 supercharged bought it at an action for $100 no one wanted it I got it safetied just needed brakes and a conductor plate cost $600 this was 8 years ago and haven’t done anything else but tires and oil changes has never had any leaks bought it with 160,000km now has 380,000 km and I’m just going to keep it until engine blows and then I’ll probably just have the entire car rebuild it is a amazing car. My last car was a 1998 camry that I had for 18 years and it was not as nice to drive and cost me more in repairs.
I got a good condition 116k miles year 1995 C36 AMG and love it. Absolutely brilliant car. I'm am restoring it to partial collectible level that's meant to be driven 5k miles a year. Full engine rebuild. Transmission rebuild then paint correction and interior refresh. Love the 4 speed 722.3 transmission which is also used in V8 Porsche 928 S4 and 964 911 Porsche automatic. Just brilliant.
BS i have a '93 C200 diesel daily driver. I also have a '90 w124 300E. I work on my cars myself and i can tell you that they are of similar quality, with the C class being more reliable as it's a diesel.
M W Then we get into that age-old discussion of what Mercedes truly was the last one that represented that mind-set. I'd say anything without airmatic was intended to last some time.
Ah, If only I got a penny every time I hear someone say that. The car is 24 years old, so I'm starting to think that these qualify as an "old mercedes". Although I've seen somepeople that refer the W115 as the "last proper old mercedes".
And the w124 was one of my favorites. Other problems with the W202 were, they didn't score well in crash tests (why was this?) and rust was also an issue.
My 1995 C class had 230k Miles in Northeast USA, lots of snow, salt, bad roads etc... ran like a champ up until the accident... I love the body...And yup, had to get it rewired and blew a gasket. spot on.
I have a C180 W202 and its a beast. Definitely not the fastest car but one of the most reliable classy and well built cars ever. This car is made to last for ever. I really enjoy driving it. This car will still drive when all the new cars will be in the junkyard...
Modern cars aren‘t as bad as people claim they are. People like to romanticize older cars but the truth is that modern cars are BETTER. They are better built, faster, safer, more comfortable/roomier, efficient, have longer service intervals etc. Yes, they are more complex but at the same some of the most high-held older cars were considered very complex during their time such as the legendary Mercedes W123. I think the bigger issue is that many people lease cars and as a result do not feel obliged to maintain their cars well since they want the successor or newer model in 3-5 years anyway. There is no incentive to maintain a car well since some folks don‘t plan on keeping it for a long time. Those that do and who maintain their cars well will have a better, more positive ownership experience story. Alas, there are more satisfied customers of most car brands out there than unsatisfied. In my experience my paid-for-and-owned 2007 BMW and my old folks 2002 MB E320 W211 and 2010 E350 CGI W212 have been very reliable, durable and low maintenance with just basic care and normal driving habits (no short trips, no gunning a cold engine etc.). As Jay Leno says: „Maintain a car well and it will run forever.“
New cars are not necessarily BETTER overall as it depends on what factors you look at. I think in ways that technology inevitably advances, yes, new cars are generally better. Things like power, fuel efficiency, safety devices, technology, and variety of amenities are generally superior in newer cars. Of course, they should be, since new advances in science and engineering over time usually lead to better, more efficient designs and prices of tech comes down over time allowing cheap new cars to have things only luxury cars of the past would have had. In ways that are not as sensitive to advancement, new cars are generally WORSE than old cars. I don't know what cars you have driven, but new cars are not nearly as comfortable or spacious in general. New cars have seats that are stiff, consoles that block you in, roof lines that slope near your head, fat headrests and thick, awkward a and c pillars that make it hard to see out, stubby trunks with small entry spaces, and outside dimensions that are quite diminished from old cars. Older cars have simpler mechanisms that are easier to understand and repair on your own and often work even if these systems are badly compromised. Many older cars have superior ride comfort with suspensions that were tuned to be softer and with easy over-boosted steering. Older cars usually have more robust build quality and are made of more substantial materials since technology hadn't advanced enough for companies to learn how to minimize everything. Feel a door handle or turn signal lever from the 1960s versus today, or try to sit on a hood of a car today versus an old car. Older cars had far more variety of style and styling cues. Think of dagmar bumpers, tail fins, egg-crate grills, stylized spoilers, pinstripes, vinyl and fabric tops, rocker panels, hood and other ornaments, copious chrome, fender skirts, hood scoops, continental kits, multi-colored interiors, cornering lamps, hidden headlamps, use of leather, velour, and wood, and the myriad shapes and styles that are almost non-existent today since regulations and cost make it difficult for car makers to vary designs. Older cars are cheaper to buy, own, insure, and don't depreciate as much or, if old enough, actually gain value. New cars have a lot of positive qualities, but it is not just nostalgia that makes a lot of old cars better to some. Though technology has advanced some things, the current trends have compromised many other things and makes the argument of what is "better" highly dependent on what someone is looking for.
Thats BS. 80s Mercs are the best they ever built. Tougher materials where used from the metals to plastics etc. Ask any car mechanic from Africa or the Balkans in wich era they produced the most reliable cars, the only awnser you will get is 80s to early 90 s.
I have a 1999 C230 Kompressor, which look like the same style as your (W202). The previous owner kept parking it on my street and it would stay there for days on end. One day I put a not on it asking if he wanted to sell. I got the call and we made a deal. It had codes that indicated O2 sensor and mis-fire, which was due to MAF sensor. Got those taken care of and it has run excellently ever since. It is now up to 210,000 miles and going strong. I am sure I feel the same way about mine as you do about yours.
I picked one up for $600 Australian! A 1996 C200 Classic. It needs a bit of work. But I was quite happy to have it for $600 bucks. It is a real head turner, particularly in the town where I live.
Yes I have a Black 2002 E20 4matic and that car is a beast!! 155,000 on it.. I bought it with like 140,000 on it in 2016 and was told for a vehicle that old to be so low in mileage is a plus plus I'm the second owner too.. 😄 my car is pushing 20 years and still rides good as new people love my old little benz I get so many compliments for some reason with that car more than any car I've owned and its a 2002 for god sakes 🤣 I brought that car for its durability and I was almost going to get a 2008 benz at the time but it felt flimsy for some reason compared to when I drove the 2002 which just feels sturdy plus I appreciate the fact that is surrounded by air bags even in the back seat if I should ever get into an accident. Mercedes was ahead of their time in 2002 some of the features on it alot of cars still don't have.. Like rolling up and down your windows with the key and a list of other features that are Still cool by todays standards. If mercedes could build them sturdy like the w210s and previous models were built while at the same time including the modern technology we all love in our vehicles than mercedes would get less complaints on their new vehicles because they are watered down now as far as durability.. There is no excuse for older cars to be lasting longer than some of these new cars.. Its a big problem in the Automotive industry because now a days everything is about just simply making it "Look" good with cheaper materials and throwing a few cool technological features in to make it sell and look cooler. Its not just Mercedes alot of car companies are lowering the standards we are all use to. We are still seeing Benz from the early 90s in 2020 still in excellent condition majority of the time the proof is in the pudding the only thing I would change about my car is making it alittle less boxy its towing the line for my taste but its still a sexy and not boxy like the 80s and 90s versions.. I can't stand a boxy car i think 80s and 90s had some of the ugliest vehicles ever seen on road in America.. 😂😂
I have a couple of older Mercedes that I like and own .One is a 1962 190. The other is a1980 300td wagon n a 1982 240D. I consider those older 95 seems like a new car to me I wouldn't mind having yours but the biodegradable wiring harness makes me nervous
Do research before buying 90s Mercedes. For w202, facelifted model with HFM don't have the biodegradable wiring anymore, just the early models with PMS injection is... Im not sure about other models though. Probably around the same timeframe. If you buy the facelifted w124, you'll run through the same biodegradable wiring problem too. To be sure, take of the cam cover or look though any wires near the engine bay. If you can see cracking, avoid.. unless you're willing to replace the whole wiring.
I have a 97 c230 what I purchased new. It now has 245k miles and the only problems I’ve had were a water pump and an alternator. It’s literally been the best car I’ve owned.
An old Mercedes is like a Toyota, except you actually have to actually maintain it. Been driving my '87 260E for over 10 years, and my grandmother drove it since new.
I have an 1990 S124 t-model and my daily is an 2001 s210 t-model E-class. I love both very much, and here in germany it's one of the cheapest and most reliable way to drive an cheap big old car. Only disadvantage is rust, but i rather like to weld and paint, than repair complicated mechanical parts.
My 1997 C240 has only broken abs, electric windows in the back and driver window only goes down one inch at the time, cruise control lever, headlight wipers and washers, the oscillation on the front wiper, occuring timing chain chatter and ACs leaking so W202s are great... 👍
William Parker shit reliability MB’s are the 2000-2006 gen cars. W203, W211, W220, etc. After that they got their shit together with the W204, W221, W212, and W211 Facelift. These gen Mercedes seem to be lasting much longer with less repairs. I have a 07’ S550 W221 and it’s a great car. No issues (knock on wood) besides the odd vibration that I can’t seem to track down. I’ve seen W204s and the such with extremely high mileage and seem to hold up well. But you’re right MBTex seems to rip easier than leather. But when it doesn’t rip it looks much better over time. My W221 leather is wrinkled and loose compared to my family’s W211 with MBTex that looks brand new. (2006 E350)
Could also be the fronts. German cars always have a ton of negative camber for very marginally better handling, so the tires wear on the inside edge like crazy unless you're taking hard corners 24/7.
Max think about where the car is from. Germany doesn't have straight roads that you can follow for 30 hours without turning. American cars of that era were only designed for that purpose, so if i'd have to make a wild guess i'd say an equally old corvette would lose a race around the Nürburgring against this Mercedes.
I bought a 07 C230 sport for 3k. I’ve put continentals tires, new radiator fan, new thermostat. New exhaust cam shaft position sensors, replaced both exhaust camshaft solenoids, the actuator rod part that activates the vacuum pumps in the intake manifold got replaced, new spark plugs, oil change and changed the air filters and cabin filters. Ozoned the cars ac. Now I need to find two emission gas leaks, probably one is the gas cap and the other is the charcoal filter. And I even redid the headliner and bought a new sunroof and replaced it cause it wouldn’t closed when opened. I still need to replace the steering wheel, reglue the shifter base down to the center console and patch up the left drivers elbow rest cause it’s cracking. And then I’m gonna get started on getting the front bumper repainted. I spent so much time and money on this car I don’t want to sell it. But the check engine light from the emissions leak is irking me lol
Akshat Singh the 2006 and newer W211 seem to be great cars. I’ve seen a 2006 E500 with 430k miles for sale in literally perfect condition besides some leather rips. Saw an E350 with like 300k that looked about the same. In the past 10 years Mercedes have been in JD Power’s top 10 most reliable vehicles to buy like over 5 times. Hopefully they’re coming back into their prime for reliability.
I think the 190e is the most underated Mercedes out the old school group.same safety rating as the S-class. and don't forget the 5-link rear suspension.
My 84 300sd is a tank and the cast iron engine is bulletproof! 302k miles she still runs strong!! Love my old deisel i wouldn’t sell it for nothing and i have a 04 CL55 AMG that i love speeding in!!
My first MB was a 1967 200D, which eventually went 863,000 miles until it was broadsided by a Mack truck, Driver's door opened nicely once I got over the shock of the incident.
863.000 miles?!?!
You are right about the old Merc quality, I pulled an '83 230e (W123) out of a barn where it had sat for 20 years and the interior was still fresh, it didn’t start as the electrics were vandalised but it cranked over happily...it will run soon!
furiousdriving my brother has the same model, think the value will spike soon.
You were handed a Brand new 500SL when you were 16?? Geez, Im a jackass that worked at a super market from 14 to 16 to pay for a 10 year old Camry.

Definitely spoiled!!! I had to buy my own shit!! I drive a BMW my fifth now.. UPGRADED and a life threatening accident. Always a dream to drive

A much more truthful, honest review than Scotty Kilmers review. You actually know, appreciate and understand Mercedes cars!
He is talking about new Mercedes he’s said that the old mercs are tanks
Scotty is a mechanic, this is one guy with one car. Plus it's a different generation
Ilias Lamari Scotty Kilmer isn’t wrong... new Mercedes will be extremely lucky to make it to 100k miles without costing a mortgage to fix
I had a 123 300cd that I drove for 14 years. Other than preventative maintenance I never did anything to it. Now that car was bullet proof.
They are driven extensively in the middle east they are usually used as taxis
The one car that I had to send to the dealership 5 times within the first 50 000 km due to broken shit was a Mercedes. Don't get me started on how that shit almost killed my ass on the highway when it suddenly turned the engine off at night for no reason.
I bought last month partly thanks to you hoovie. 6500 dollars. And 3000 in repair. But now its in almost perfect shape. I love love love it!!
The repairs was, new keys, new window lift motor, service, airbag ,new bulbs, tire adjustment and vacuum hoses.
Can you just clean the mass airflow sensor?

And has the top speed of a tank too 😄
Jk. The 190's are beasts and cheap to run

I have one of these today. It was a really really reliable car. I have got 200,000 Miles on it, and it still runs smooth! Btw mine is a “98” and it is a great reliable vehicle. I’d rather own one of these than a Chevy SS.
Do you still have it & if so is it still running good? I am thinking of buying one myself
Thanks.....

You don't know what you have with that 500E. Guard it closely....
Cars (and things in general) were built to last back in the day. This being a testament to their superior build quality. Now companies actually build things so they brake, on purpose. So they can sell more parts. It's really that simple. Sad, but true.
Pfff planned obsolescence has been around since the 1920s at least. Not remotely new at all
Mercedes in the 80's had just as many defects as anyone else as they came off the line.
JWB671 To be fair I still see a bunch of 80s Mercedes on the road still. 80s import cars None!

I drove a 1987 Mercedes 400-E forever. That beast never once quit on me and had 340,000 miles on it when I sold it last year.

- Fan belt & tensioner for my accessory belt was like under $60 to do yourself.
(I didn't have time to do job myself)
- $15 Differential Oil Change (They didn't really charge me anything)
- Full Suspension rebuild was $250-300 but I was dumb and wanted to lower it. so it was $600 in parts (It's not bad after lowering but I just noticed the ride is actually better if I just cut the stock mercedes springs carefully, I had no idea..)
- I put in a Sony Head unit with Amplified Sub behind my seat and replaced door speakers for $240 - $150 labor to wire it.
(Has speaker phone, bluetooth, NFC and all that)
Next thing to do is performance upgrades, clean out carbon build up and have a specialist give advice, order upgraded turbo/or pump. Later change it over the Manual transmission. Diesel Trans are dogs on these cars but tough.

The 1991 S-Class. the SL500, the 500E, and C36 are prime examples of when they built the best cars in the world.
500E or C36?
Agreed. Biodegradable wiring harnesses? That is just crazy for something that's not intended to be a disposable item.
Jase Poag cars are considered disposable items to 90% of the market
Well yes, long term they're made to be disposable these days. I just can't imagine purposely designing something to break down though.
Government didn't tell Mercedes to make biodegradable wiring harness.
True till 1994 max and fuck the rest. 1992 W140 ❤
Spot on.
what do you think about a 93 mercedes 300se?
@@bjornolson21 great car. But I prefer 500SEL. You will never regret it.

This generation C43 with a 55 swap is SOOO appealing, ugh want one so bad
This is NOT what ppl refer to as "old mercedes". This is "new mercedes". Old merc died with the 124.
BS i have a '93 C200 diesel daily driver. I also have a '90 w124 300E. I work on my cars myself and i can tell you that they are of similar quality, with the C class being more reliable as it's a diesel.
I have two w126s and a w202 C 280 Elegance. 202 is just as reliable as the elder models. It is a true old Mercedes too.
I'm sitting here waiting for the one day you sell that Mercedes to another Tyler.... me... sell it to me.
Tyler McCain , ah I guess us Tyler’s like old Mercedes.
Tyler is the type of guy to sell his old Merc to a guy called Tyler, Tyler.
No, he's selling it to me to go along side my 99 C43.
No, you're going to sell me that too.
Tyler McCain you dont want it. It's got 310k miles on it plus a 99 e55 motor. Very boring and not worthwhile to own.
Anyone else tired of those watches and just skip through the watch scenes?
Not cause I was tired, I just didn’t have the time.
I stopped wearing watches once smart phones became common

Yep, who the hell needs watches in this day and age?
@@bricktop. pretty much for style.
Dude is wasting my time and yet is promoting watches. Smh.
Yea all that may be true, but the real truth is most new cars have lost nice designs! Most older car designs are Way better and more original!
100 Mercedes Benz cars ?? What kind off drugs you sell

It’s a beautiful car man! I don’t blame you for keeping it
Yes I have a Black 2002 E20 4matic and that car is a beast!! 😂😂
I have a Mercedes w123 300D that got over 1.2 million km. The engine has newer been rebuildt
C36 AMG Best Mercedes AMG ever builded...
I have a couple of older Mercedes that I like and own .One is a 1962 190. The other is a1980 300td wagon n a 1982 240D. I consider those older 95 seems like a new car to me I wouldn't mind having yours but the biodegradable wiring harness makes me nervous
Mr Charles nah it's ok once replaced no problems any time again
Do research before buying 90s Mercedes. For w202, facelifted model with HFM don't have the biodegradable wiring anymore, just the early models with PMS injection is... Im not sure about other models though. Probably around the same timeframe. If you buy the facelifted w124, you'll run through the same biodegradable wiring problem too. To be sure, take of the cam cover or look though any wires near the engine bay. If you can see cracking, avoid.. unless you're willing to replace the whole wiring.
My understanding was Mercedes from 1992 to 1995 were afflicted with this issue and depending on the model, it's a $1200 to $2000 job.
Ezalian okay thanks for the info. I have been looking at some 90s models so that helps
Mr Charles Lol how is 95 a "new car" lmfao
I have a 97 c230 what I purchased new. It now has 245k miles and the only problems I’ve had were a water pump and an alternator. It’s literally been the best car I’ve owned.
W202 sport today, buy at summer 2013. Hi from Kyiv🇺🇦
Thumbs up if you skipped the Watch Advertisement at the beginning
An old Mercedes is like a Toyota, except you actually have to actually maintain it. Been driving my '87 260E for over 10 years, and my grandmother drove it since new.
Sure but nobody ever says "ooooh a Toyota" as you pull up in one of those 😏
@@ScubaSteveM45 Only a Supra lol
Funny enough, I just bought a w202
c230 kompressor
lmao me too
I have an 1990 S124 t-model and my daily is an 2001 s210 t-model E-class. I love both very much, and here in germany it's one of the cheapest and most reliable way to drive an cheap big old car. Only disadvantage is rust, but i rather like to weld and paint, than repair complicated mechanical parts.
We love our W202 C43 AMG. It's a blast to drive, and the build quality is textbook.
My 1997 C240 has only broken abs, electric windows in the back and driver window only goes down one inch at the time, cruise control lever, headlight wipers and washers, the oscillation on the front wiper, occuring timing chain chatter and ACs leaking so W202s are great... 👍
Leofred my 09 C300 has a bad mirror signal light because of a bad seal and a ripped driver's seat. W204s aren't bad except mbtex is junk.
W204 are awesome cars!
I feel most MBs from 1994-2010 are sh**
William Parker Really? My MBtex is awesome!
I clicked off a Doug DeMuro video for this, this better be good... lol
Redline Raphael how can you listen to lisp boy....i can't
Be happy, watch both (no pun intended). Tavarish also gets a look in.
2 tires? I bet it was the rear tires... 😂
Yeah my thoughts exactly, no idea why... ;D
Could also be the fronts. German cars always have a ton of negative camber for very marginally better handling, so the tires wear on the inside edge like crazy unless you're taking hard corners 24/7.
Could be... you want to clarify hoovie?
Max think about where the car is from. Germany doesn't have straight roads that you can follow for 30 hours without turning. American cars of that era were only designed for that purpose, so if i'd have to make a wild guess i'd say an equally old corvette would lose a race around the Nürburgring against this Mercedes.
Lexor888 Well, a 1995 Corvette ZR1 will do 0-60 in 4.4 Seconds, so I'm gonna go ahead and disagree with you on that.
I just bought a Mercedes 2000 E320.. 130,000 miles... very happy with it... just concerned about a little rust😯
mvmt watches won't live forever tho.
kek
Yup
I’ll give you $5500 cash.
I own a 2006 e200 w211 driven around 200k miles literally it's engine is bulletproof since it drives like new
Akshat Singh the 2006 and newer W211 seem to be great cars.
Ya you are right @tyler beeson
Tyler Beeson The W212s were bulletproof. Mine can literally take a bomb hit.
I’ve got a 2009 w204 with 250k miles.. just gotta maintain the car
I've owned a 97 C250 2.5L 5 cylindres Turbo Diesel with 150hp it was a pure blast
I think the 190e is the most underated Mercedes out the old school group.same safety rating as the S-class. and don't forget the 5-link rear suspension.
5:57 shit is leaking already lol
