Why did the audience only react when the camera showed?
The turned off the lights💡 only on stage so everyone could be surprised, at least that's what I think💭
The prompters on the floor tell the audience when to react. Plus there are "APPLAUSE" signs. It's the same technique they use for other stars that are waiting just offstage - or turning around in chairs, etc. - the audience can generally see everyone on the stage set and off it, but the prompters tell the audience when to react, so that the jokes/reactions are not spoiled for the home audience.
Imagine if everyone reacted at different times whenever a star walked on set - it would be chaos, so the audience is primed before air to watch for the cues from the prompters on the floor.
The audience is in on this joke; so it won't spoil the joke. If the audience screams and laughs too soon, then it will be confusing and ruins the set up for the TV audience.
