    *can also be followed by an infinitive

    This is such a great video. Although I am English, I did not received much in the way of specific Grammar lessons when I was at school. So, when my international friends ask me "why do you say ......" I do not always know the answer. Both my Mum and younger sister are English Language Teachers and and during lockdown have been going through this stuff with myself and my older sister. It has been really helpful. This video is is perfect for me as this week, my home work is to investigate Gerunds.

      Can you help me? The "drinking" examples are seriously confusing me.
      The 3rd one looks like the gerund as it seems to function most like the noun (to me), and it's obviously not, so I am missing something. Let me explain my reasons so that someone (maybe you) can correct me.
      The first saying drinking water is healthy. Drinking is a verb, the act of putting water in your system, and water is a noun, no??
      The 2nd. I am drinking water.. her explanation makes sense.
      The third.. this is DRINKING WATER. drinking water is the thing (the noun) that "this" is.
      That's my process. Help me understand why I screwed up. Please!

    If you can substitute "it", you know you have a gerund. "I love surfing." If we are talking about surfing, you can say, "I love it" and people will know what you're talking about. Same with gerund phrases: "Surfing the point is fun." If we're talking about 'surfing the point', I can say, "It is fun" and you know you have a gerund. I really like these Arnel videos. She's really good.

    I'm impressed that in english countries you use the aspect of remove dirt cleaning the word derived from a gerund. In portuguese we use a noun literally "limpeza" that is the equivalent cleaning. We don't use portuguese gerund equivalent (infinitivo) to describe cleaning. Limpeza is a born noun effectively. Two separate worlds explained by this great teacher, Teacher Arnel.

    @dominiquealpha-omega5322 Год назад

    @4:30 As to the sentence, "The best part of of a meal is EATING dessert" -- "EATING" is not a gerund. DESSERT is the noun, not "eating". "eating" is the adjectival version of a verb, in this instance. The word "eating" has been transformed from a verb into an adjective via to describe "desert". Certainly, the word "eating" does have some verbal properties in its semantics, or meaning, but it is an adjective, or a gerundive, or, in common terms, a very descriptive kind of verb transformed to an adjective. Therefore, it is a gerundive, not a gerund (a noun, or a thing) and so it is an adjectival expression of a verb, not a nominal expression of a verb. As an example: "Running is fun." (RUNNING is a noun and subject of this sentence); "The RUNNING of this race is fun!" (RUNNING is a noun is this clause); "The RUNNING horse is very fast!" (RUNNING describes the horse, and is an gerundive adjectival form of the verb).
