Unlike most composers Walton couldn’t play a musical instrument, nevertheless he managed to write 3 of the greatest works of the 20th c. 1st symphony, violin concerto and viola concerto.. What a talent.

Thank you so much for uploading this. Walton is one of my favorite composers. Nothing can beat 'A Litany'. But this symphony and Belshezzar will always remain very close to me. A very nice present in these weird times!

Wow. What a video. The very end of the viola concerto with Walton conducting and Menuhin playing...bits of Facade, bits of Belshazzar's Feast...odd little interviews where he waxes vaguely incomprehensible...then the finest performance of his 1st Symphony with Previn at the helm. This is essentially the same performance we hear from the great 1966 recording. I recognize the sound of the 1st bassoon and principal cellist. I had to wait until October of 2020 to discover a live video of this performance, which is one of my benchmarks for great music. RUclips continues to bestow its gifts on all of us.

It certainly was a golden era - Previn's rhythmic grip on the work, and a razor-sharp TV director: both talents now sadly lost but preserved here. Delighted to hear how much you enjoyed the video. Thanks.

It’s worth noting that if anyone wants to hear Walton’s incredible 1st symphony with great sound, Andre Previn’s now legendary recording from the late 1960’s is available on Y.T. To this day it remains the gold standard, never been surpassed and doubtful it ever will be.

Moira Shearer, seen dancing at the 5:36 mark of this video, is the star of the Powell and Pressburger film “The Red Shoes.” Great movie and it was released as a 4K disc last year.

What I love about Previn's conducting is he never lets the tempi get slow or mawkish. This masterpiece of a symphony is packed with emotion so keeping the momentum is crucial.
