In professional and college and school-level sports, it’s not about the face off between a twenty-something year-old woman athlete and an infirm man. It is about athletes matched by age (and sometimes by height and/or weight) in competition.
When male athletes compete against female athletes, the majority of the time - and despite the superb physique of the female and her experience and sporting capabilities - she will lose to her male competitor.
I have read that even sports I might otherwise have thought were more “of a level playing field” still have this difference. Billiards/pool, skeet shooting, etc.
