- WTF Happened To This Movie? - The JoBlo series that looks at troubled productions, curious creative decisions, box-office failures, surprising successes, and cult favorites!
Mike Judge found massive success with his "Beavis and Butt-Head" TV series, but the transition to live-action proved far more difficult. After the box office failure of OFFICE SPACE in 1999, Judge's next effort IDIOCRACY fared even worse in 2006, with the studio practically burying his movie. But in the years since, the social satire found a cult following and became part of the pop culture landscape with its depiction of a moronic future. Mutilate your thirst and find out "WTF Happened to IDIOCRACY!"

This doesn't even address worldwide Communism that literally kills every single person with an education. After Communist took over Vietnam, they killed the "Bourgeoisie", after a power failure they sought international help after they realized they had killed every single person who knew how to fix it.
@@billtoo4694 we found the idiot.

@@billtoo4694 I'm assuming you're mixing this up with the extreme but isolated, relatively brief, case of the Khmer Rouge genocide in Cambodia(which is no longer communist), which killed people viewed to be intellectuals.
The Khmer Rouge was removed by.....the Vietnamese army.
"worldwide Communism that literally kills every single person with an education" is transparently just bullshit, and there's no way anyone could truly believe that without a severe illness.
There's literally nothing to back up this rhetoric. In reality Vietnam is held up as an exceptional example of education, despite being relatively poor, certainly ranks higher than the USA for example:
www.apec.umn.edu/incomeveducationglewwe
China dominates tech, construction etc, and they somehow manage this with all their educated people 'dead', and like all other communist countries for some reason they have education facilities. Send them to university, so you can kill them later... that's some pretty insane logic right there.
It's pretty daft to label all countries that have vaguely the same poltitical system as all being the same anyway. Albeit there are a huge number...5 communist countries - China, Vietnam, Laos, Cube & North Korea(which is really it's own thing, more akin to a cult at the political level). The much more extreme North Korea & Cuba are doing the worst, Laos is so-so but seemingly improving, while China & Vietnam are booming economically - and are both highly capitalist as well as communist anyway
Similarly many democratic/capitalist countries are very different from each other.
I can't find anything relating to any particularly significant 'power failure', the rest of that phrase is obviously false, there's obviously no country that's done that.

In real life, society WILL become stupid AND CRUEL (...one coup against 'da man' at a time).
BUT there will be a secret core of clever elites (possibly dames), breeding for those idiots -- a hive. (If not, a marginally smarter society would simply invade, which would start a pressure selecting for clever again.)
If humans replace the giant caste of idiots with machines, then Idiocracy (fem-run or otherwise) WON'T happen.
Problem is machines are more expensive than the males right now (as expensive as coups are [it's complicated]): A robo vacuum-cleaner-frisbee thing probably works for 87 cents a day for 6 years, while a human works for much less than that for longer [it's complicated].

I remember before this film came out, Newsweek did an article on it. One if the things mentioned in the article was that in the first draft of the film, the original reason why people became idiots was due to the education system in the US.
Specifically, teachers no longer graded on what is considered "correct/incorrect", rather students were told if they "felt something was right, then it was". The example used was "as long as Timmy believes 2+2=5, then that's okay because we don't want to hurt his feelings."
This was cut from the film because test audiences didn't think poling fun of teachers was okay.
As a teacher, I wasn't offended by that at all.
They should've kept that in; it'd make the film even more prescient.
its because duh teachers and critical race theory duhhhhh
I wonder what the social science degree students think of this move? Anyone?
in 2006, I could understand the argument that it was needlessly insulting to teachers. Today, it's more real than they ever could have predicted.
Bush's No Child Allowed Ahead program made damn sure nobody would learn anything useful, least of all critical thinking of any kind. The GQP made this movie into its playbook.

"Idiocracy" came true. We’re living it.
Fear will make the weak do stupid shit.
When I was growing up I thought the future was going to be like Star Trek. Now...
Sta Trek is the far future dude. Give it time.
Star trek has become current day politics, so thanks to kurtzman and patrick Stewarts political garbage, its actually come true.
@@ge2719 Yep. Modern trek is blatantly shallow. The Great Bird must be rolling in his grave.

The confused lady who can only repeat the sales slogan when he's pitching the water idea, and then looks confused because he doesn't understand her....Is literally how a substantial part of our population is today. They can't think for themselves and can only puppet what has been drilled into their brains. There is no knowledge, only carefully curated off the shelf "facts" used to counter opposition.
Beavis and Butt-Head did not dumb down America. It raised a mirror, like Idiocracy and Office Space.
Idiocracy became reality… that’s what happened.
Also this was a great timeline of Mike’s career and his genius
But weirdly no mention of King of the Hill.
@@amj514 Or Daria, the one good thing to come out of Beavis and Butthead.
Another film that doesn't seem so far-fetched today: 1987's The Running Man. In the titular television game show of the future, condemned criminals run for their lives. Did you ever see Fear Factor?

IDIOCRACY
from
2017 to 2021
“Untitled Mike Judge Movie” sounds like a better movie than 2/3 of what comes out nowadays.
Far less generic...
Absolutely!
I'll take anything Mike Judge makes, even though B&B was super low-brow for my tastes. Silicon Valley was his Magnum Opus. You could see that he culled from all of his works to put that thing together.
ye boi
IKR?! Mike Judge is "mad funny with fuck you money." That's a quote from Ajay Naidu, who played Samir Nagheenanajar on Office Space.
IDIOCRACY is actually one of my favorite movies, too bad it seems to be coming true.
Same!!
When the imposter is sus
Yeah if it’s one of your favourite movies you might just be the problem. They make movies like this so morons like you don’t feel so bad while you don’t aspire to be anything but a pawn.
My brother took a moviemaking class his senior year of high school. His teacher showed this not long after it came out on DVD, then my brother ordered it from Netflix and showed it to me, and next thing you know, we're showing it to everyone we know.
Scariest movie ever. We're living this movie right fucking now.

Luckily... No Dildozer 😂
Even scarier when the satire on the Babylon Bee has to get fact checked by Snopes.
LOL, Yep, the funny thing is that ad I got when this video started was a political ad by the democrats entitled Jim Crow 2.0
I heard about Babylon Bee from the Fact-checkers, and I have to say, many of the things they say also become true to the point where their page look like a News Site rather than satire, hence the 'Need' to fact-check them.
What ridiculous times we are living. But with the incoming Depression, Americans will have a very rude awakening.
@@joshanonline Precisely.
@@joshanonline Many of the people here are members of the smugnoratti who assume that their version of condescending leftist pseudo-intellectual dogma is unquestioned. It's that mentality that leads to the BB getting fact checked but also it makes good propaganda.
@Cafe Ok Yeah, even friends who I normally think of as good critical thinkers. I am talking about people with university degrees in the sciences (actual sciences not social studies) are snowed over by the concept of a "fact check" or "debunking". I have to give them credit they gamed out the propaganda strategy to a tee.
"I used to think my life was a tragedy, but I now realise- it's a comedy!"
"It's all a joke, it's all a fuckin joke."
Almost the exact opposite line is in Stranger than Fiction after keeping track of things that were more comedic or tragedy, "This may sound like gibberish to you... but uh... but I think I'm in a tragedy.
Definitely top of my all time favs, right next to Spaceballs and Caddy shack. Can you imagine kicking back with Mike Judge, Mel Brooks, and Harold Ramos. Hope I spelled that right... Anyway, comic genius!
"Mike Judge is no prophet" well, his movie says otherwise, so...

Now, we are looking at Jr. High? As our culture???
Indeed my supervisor is a living embodiment of Beavis
True. I was watching a news segment where they were interviewing FB factcheckers, who are children in middle school.
It's definitely a true statement with lower average IQ democracies.
What do you think happened in Germany in 1932? 170 years of government-run schooling. We're coming up on 170 years of the same (Prussian-style education!) if you count from when MA went onto the Prussian model (1852). You can read all about it in "The Underground History of American Education" by John Taylor Gatto, and "The Shadow University" by Harvey Silverglate.
The lack of any mention of King of the Hill in cataloging Mike Judge's career is...odd.
Yep, it's amazing how the video completely avoided this part of Mike Judge's career. Maybe because it paints South Conservatives in a slightly favourable light?

Lol yeah people in idiocracy would definetly be anti maskers. Hell, the idea of injecting bleach into your arm to fight off a virus would be seen as too outrageous to put in a movie back then.. And here we are.
Also from my understanding most people that wear a mask alone in their car are people who sanitized their hands properly before donning the mask. They don't want to compromise it but taking it on and off every five minutes because they actually want it to work properly.

I may have missed it, but they didn’t mention King of the Hill in this video. That’s one of Mike Judge’s biggest achievements
I mean really! Why was that not mentioned?
Yeah right! You say King of the Hill is one of his best things when you admit you have not even SEEn this movie yet? I bet you missed Silicon Valley, Extract and Office space too? King of the hill is probably his most bland, boring mainstream thing though.
@@MindGem Speaking of idiots, there's you. He didn't say "King of the Hill" was one Mike Judge's best things, just one of his biggest achievements, which it is. It was a very successful and long running show. When he said "I may have missed it", he was talking about missing a reference to "King of the Hill" in this video, not the movie "Idiocracy".

Idiocracy didn’t go anywhere. We’re living in it.
I tried to introduce this movie to my friends shortly after it came out. There was an eerie feeling amongst us afterwards. Like it was an unspoken agreement it was slowly coming true and we never spoke of it again.
I started to watch the way I sounded after I saw that movie. It's pretty on point, I think.
The film is also about people like you and your friend, you're just too dumb to see it. Dumb people thinking that they are smarter than they actually are.

@@thevgmlover What is that film. The way i sounded? Im from the future..
I love this movie lol... the fact that the cast for the "Ass" movie scene laughed at it without direction makes it all the better
Hilarious.
I think it was a sign of stupidity in the movie because they watched over and over and still laughed. If I was told I was going to a screening for a movie and when I got there it was just a farting ass, I think I would probably laugh too. Mostly because I wouldn't be sure what was going on and the situation would be kind of novel to me. That said I wouldn't go back for a repeat visit or buy the movie when it came out.
Idk I laugh at a lot of things. Sometimes because I think they are clever and they genuinely tickle me, sometimes because they are just so dumb there is no other response to give. Usually the clever things I can laugh at again if I'm reminded of them later while the stupid things feel like a one off that gets tiring fast after repetition.
Was about to comment....Ragnarok already said it.
Farts are funny. Add to that, the incredibly strange way the farts presented to the audience. I would have laughed too.
