Here's an author who is fascinating even if he's never been one of my favorites, I say fascinating as a man, not merely as a writer. And I respectfully disagree with your opinion about Blood Meridian, the other books I've read by him have been okay or disappointing, but Blood Meridian is so far the best book I've read in 2024, I constantly put the book down to write some notes, reread the same passage and write some more analysis before moving on and thanks to that it took me two weeks to read the book and it was a great experience along with a few other very dense classics that are worth this type of reading. I even reread some of my old books on Gnosticism when I noticed that he had inserted some of that into the book instead of it simply being an "edgy deconstruction of the Wild West". And I'm more than willing to re-read the book and try different ways of interpreting the book. Following the standards of Italo Calvino for classics I would say yes, for me Blood Meridian is a masterpiece of classical literature, a book that's always worth revisiting and re-thinking.
I’m glad you enjoyed BM so much. I wish I had that appreciation. Someday I may give it another shot in another setting, but for this go around it just wasn’t for me at all which is a shame.
I can agree with pretty much everything you said here for all of the ones that I've read as well. Upon further consideration, I think I'd agree that Blood Meridian is straight trash and is even worse than the Roh... (Tries again) ...the Roh... Nope, I can't do it, but you know what I mean. I also did a reread of it and look upon it at a higher level than BM. With your enthusiasm about the Stella Maris and Passenger books, I'm super stoked to try those out some day to see if I also fall in line with your feelings about them.
I certainly hope more give the duology a shot, tho my level of praise seems to be pretty out of the ordinary. Based on the video essay I did, most think they’re mid. But then, most love The *Vomits* and Blood Meridian haha
