Why do people move to Madeira, and what are the new rules in 2024? Property expert John Mather takes us through why and how people make Madeira their new home.
I really enjoy your videos. My husband and I just purchased a home there in Prazeres this past Nov. Our plan is to relocate early next year. I am a Realtor here in Florida. I would love to look you up when we are there again.
Hi there Tina, what a pleasure to receive your message, you must be looking forward to your move, how exciting. Yes do be in touch when you're next in Madeira, we'd love to meet up and share a coffee in the park or something. All the best to you in the meantime.
I love Madeira! To live there is a dream I hope to fulfill….sooner rather than later 😁 Good advice and insight on what it takes to move there. Thanks for doing these interviews
Hi there Kev, ah y'welcome. It was interesting and enjoyable to do it, so we're really pleased it was of interest to you as you're contemplating moving there. Hope it all goes well for you. Maybe our paths will cross someday.
Thanks Yvonne, Mike & John 🙂 That was a great & informative video, especially clearing up the true facts of the Golden Visa & also about immigration to the island as I've noticed in certain Facebook groups, there seems to be a backlash against North Americans of late. Have a wonderful week my friends 🤗
Hi there Rue, ah yes we like the idea of putting all viewpoints forward, that's our hope and to help clear things up for folk too. BTW, we've been continuing to enjoy your Bangladesh videos too. Dhaka is just like we remember India to be when we were visiting over 10 years ago. I can only imagine how much it's changed. Even though it was India and not Bangladesh, you bring a lot of those memories back, in the general atmosphere. We do remember stopping over in Bangladesh and feeling that we were in the company of the warmest hearted people we had ever encountered. Keep them coming won't you mate.
Thanks Mike, another quality video. I met Jessie in a nail bar of all things getting my corn dressed and a pedicure in June 2023. I had an informative informal meeting with John and Jessie in September - very impressed. I'm sitting on the fence at the moment until all the rule changes are known. I have spent 11 weeks in Madeira, on four visits, since the middle of June. Eighteen visits since 2001 - that tells me something - I should move! My wife passed away last March at 56 so there is not much stopping me apart from the fact I'm 73 and got some medical issues which is a bit of a complication. On a side note - it is very difficult to talk Portuguese as most people would say talk English or in my case Jockanese (I'm Scottish). Thanks again
Ah what an exotic meeting point Alex :) I'm glad you found your meeting with John and Jessie in September informative. I do understand your sitting on the fence at the mo', it's no small decision is it, but having spent 18 visits since 2001 does seem to be telling you you're not likely to go off it at least. We're so very sorry to hear your wife passed away last March, that's really not so long ago, it can't be an easy time for you. We'll be backwards and forward to Madeira for a while between travelling, so do drop us a line when you're next in Funchal and if we're around perhaps we can meet for a coffee and ponder on future life with you? We'll do our best to understand your Jockanese!!
Thanks, Mike & Yvonne, for another great video. We really enjoyed the conversation with John - as well as the route you chose for your walk. Having stayed just around the corner from John's office during our visit in December, we found ourselves wanting nothing more than to be back in Madeira!
Hi Mike....thank you so much for always posting content that is absolutely relevant for those who want to know places and/or live in them......and for me, in particular, Madeira Island!! I was born there (Funchal), and when I was only 3 months old, (still a baby in a basket), my parents decided to follow my mother's family and we went to live in Brazil in Sao Paulo. Madeira has been alive inside me since I was 4...5 years old, when I started to understand the stories my father told me about his childhood...It was always our Christmas conversation...leaving our tree full of baubles and twinkling lights. We looked at many photos that he kept in a yellow box. He was a photographer at "Perestrello - Photographers" As I grew up I felt more and more that I didn't have much connection with the country where I was. It seemed that... only my body left Madeira, but my heart stayed there. My greatest wish is to live on my Island. As incredible as it may seem... only I, within the Family, grew up "in love" and dreaming about the Island... my birthplace that I didn't know about because I was just a 3-month-old baby). When I got to know the Island... (I was already an adult) ahh... what emotion!! I fell even more in love when I got to know my father's Family and the house where I was born. Places that my Father described. Getting to know the "Bazar do Povo"... where there is a fountain on the opposite side of the Cathedral of Madeira! (where there are women selling flowers)...It was very exciting, because throughout my childhood I sent my little letters to my dear Grandfather, who worked there. Today, October 24, 2024, it's been 18 years since I left Brazil-Sao Paulo (24/OCT/2006) with my teenage son to come and live in England. We went to Madeira 1 month later on vacation.....NOV 26, 2006 (for 1 month and 15 days) so my son could see the Island where I was born and some of the relatives I still have there. I find myself thinking...with my heart beating fast: Will I still live on my island?. But how?. I don't know!!! I wouldn't want it to be just a dream!!! Madeira means to my heart...my home!!! And I've seen it so little... only 3 times (2 times while I was in Brazil and working at Aviation (Braziliian Airlines)... and 1 after we arrived in the UK. Sorry for the long comment. That's why I avoid leaving comments on videos about Madeira, because I can't hold so many tears of emotion! A big hug!!! Thank you for this magnificent channel! ♫•♡•☆‿.•*´☆•♡•♫
Such a lovely comment - thank you so much for sharing your history with Madeira. We're excited for you, as you visit all these places on the island, that you've only seen in pictures or heard about in stories from your father. In all the time we've spent here, we've never lost that sense of appreciation and contentment as we wander it's streets and levadas, so we can imagine how exciting it must be for you. And who knows, perhaps your dream will come true, and this can be your home once again!
@@LivingWalks Thank you! Very kind!!.I wil never give uo n dreaming of living in my beautiful Island. I hope one day this dream will come true! (*•.♡.•*´)

Hello there, thanks for dropping by. We wish you the very best with that. Do keep in touch, perhaps our paths will cross someday. No natural disasters apart from the odd landslip on a road after a heavy rainfall.

Blimey! My family is from there. I don't speak Portuguese, though. If they have a language school there, I might go.
